Modder ‘MochaTheTransProto’ has announced that they are working on an RTX Remix Mod for the first classic Half-Life game. And although there isn’t any ETA on when it will come out, the modder shared the first WIP screenshot from it.
This screenshot showcases the fully path-traced reflections that players will enjoy in it. It also shows some lighting improvements due to the path-tracing lighting that the game will now have.
Now while this is cool, there is already a mod that added full ray tracing/path tracing effects to Valve’s classic FPS. This Path Tracing Mod, created by ‘sultim_t’, came out last year. So, I’m not pretty sure whether it’s worth investing the time and effort into creating another RTX Mod for it. The mod from sultim_t already looks incredible, and I doubt this new RTX Remix Mod will be able to top it. In fact, I expect the first version of this new mod to be less impressive than the one-year-old mod.
So, while this is kind of cool, we won’t be focusing on it in the coming weeks or months. Again, if you want Full Ray Tracing/Path Tracing effects in Half-Life, you can already download the aforementioned mod. So, why have we published an article for the new Half-Life RTX Mod you ask? Well, it at least deserves a mention.
These past few months we’ve been covering a lot of RTX Remix Mods. In January 2023, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Last month, we also shared videos for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas RTX Remix, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Unreal, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and Midnight Club 2. Earlier this month, we also shared the first screenshots from the RTX Remix Mod for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. And yesterday, we shared a WIP video for Fallout: New Vegas with RTX.
Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders have released early demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Max Payne and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. On the other hand, the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne looks amazing (at least in my opinion). Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for the first and the second NFS: Underground games. Oh, and don’t forget to give a go at this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Finally, you can download Path Tracing Mods for Doom 2, Quake, and Serious Sam.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

I swear it already ticks me off whenever i see a reflective surface slapped onto whatever when talking about RT. Use it right, don’t force it! for fcks sake!
Wooden table? Mirror!
Tyres? Reflective af!
Grass? You’re blind now!
Why not just implement it in Black Mesa? All the assets have already been upgraded. Just needs RT.
My exact thought as I was reading that already exist a RT mod.
RTX Remix can’t work with Black Mesa in its current form because it makes use of the latest version of Valve’s original Source 1 engine, which requires DX9 with shaders.
Right now, RTX Remix works by translating older games without programmable shaders via a fork of DXVK, which then can make use of the Vulkan API’s ray-tracing capabilities to inject path-tracing into these classic games.
I never looked into the details before, but I remembered that it worked with DX9 games. I thought that it worked with all DX9 games. I did not know that it had to be a fixed function pipeline and that it struggled with programmable shaders. That is a bummer. Still cool tech though that was unexpected.
Half-Life RT already exists, and it’s fantastic! What’s the point of this?!
To upset those who went AMD 😉
So we’ve got UE5, RTX Remix and usually the latest big release checking the seo boxes and “loot” boxes lol
