Half-Life fans, here is something for you today. It appears that the official mobile app for Gamescom 2023 may have leaked an upcoming Half-Life announcement.
According to the app, Valve will be present at Gamescom 2023. Not only that, but the app contains the Half-Life tag, suggesting a new HL announcement.
Now I’d strongly recommend tempering your expectations. This won’t likely be Half-Life 3 (at this point, I don’t expect Valve to ever develop it). So no, don’t start with the “Half-Life 3 confirmed baby” memes. However, I’d definitely welcome the return of the “Half-Life, 3 screenshots” meme.
Anyway, if I had to guess, I’d say that this may be a port of Half-Life: Alyx to PSVR2. That or Valve may announce the sequel to Alyx. There are also reports that Valve is working on a multiplayer game that is based on the Half-Life universe.
If you are still interested in the third episode of Half Life 2, I’d suggest taking a look at the following mods. There are currently two HL2: Episode 3 mods that you can download, Half-Life 2: Episode Three Minimalist and Half-life 2 Episode 3: The Return. And, unfortunately, it appears that both Boreal Alyph and Project Borealis have been canceled.
Lastly, you can find below two from the Gamescom 2023 app. These images confirm Valve’s presence at this upcoming gaming event. Still, and as I’ve already said, you should keep your expectations in check.

What does it have to do with anything? It’s still a triple-A new Half-Life game. And there are lots of points toward the sequels in the work.

nah he said they would only make it if they got that worthy “next leap in gaming”. Like the jump from HL1 to HL2 with the source physics. Thats why they made HL Alyx. The VR was another big jump like they intended.
Source 2 might be a good start but they are waiting for something I can´t even imagine.

Fine but notice how with VR as a next leap, the made “HL Alyx”, not “HL3”. Of course, you wouldn’t play your strongest card for just a tiny niche audience.
However then, what would that “actual next leap” really be? Nothing. It will be waiting forever.
We had several mid to large changes since HL2 like mobile gaming, ssd/nvme, VR, videogame streaming, ray/path tracing, possibly AI, but unless AI is widely and deeply integrated across most mechanics in a game which will take many more years, nothing was or will be as transformative by itself alone as the breakneck progress in computing power of the early 3D gaming era.
If they ever want to release a HL3, it will have to do with deep AI use or just integrate all the progress from the last 2+ decades in that game.
Maybe something really cool like a HL Card Game to play on cell phones.

Half-Life might’ve been a healthier, more currently relevant franchise right now if Valve didn’t have their stupid flat management structure.

They don’t need to make games anymore. Find a way to force Steam out of business and you got your HL. Big publishers tried with their so called launchers to no avail so far.
