First Chrono Trigger patch released, allows players to use the original “SNES” graphics

Square Enix announced today that following fan feedback, Chrono Trigger for Steam has received the first of a number of planned patches to enhance the game’s presentation and features.

Today’s patch includes:

  • Original Graphics: A new option will allow players to choose between the current high-resolution character sprites and background graphics, or a new ‘Original’ mode which is more in-line with the original style of CHRONO TRIGGER.
  • Updated Font and Dialogue Boxes: Fonts and dialogue window graphics are updated to give the game a more classic look and feel.
  • New Start-Up: The order of the animated opening sequences when starting a new game are reworked to be more in line with previous versions of the game.
  • Additional enhancements and fixes to the text and graphics within the game to enhance the PC play experience.

Further changes will be made to Chrono Trigger in later updates, which will include additional UI changes to optimise gameplay for PC users playing with either a gamepad or keyboard and mouse, improved resolution in animated cut-scenes and more.

  1. not sure if they know this, but many an emulator runs this far better than what they came up with!

    1. And it’s for 99% not legal since rom is pirated. Not to mention convenience like native gamepad support, cloud sync and running it without configuring literally anything(like adjusting color palette for each game to get best experience).

      1. Quite possibly not even Square Enix given that it’s emulators that have helped keep the memory of such crusty old games alive all these years. So that pretty much leaves only virtue signalling white knights on the internet to care.

      2. You don’t need to adjust that much. Not more than any other options menu. Especially for NES and SNES emulation. Jeesh.

      3. What emulators are you using? Other than cloud sync every emulator I’ve used has had native game pad support and by configurable color palettes do you mean configurable scalers and filiters? If so, this patch adds that option to the Steam version, lol.

Dude, you need to get better at trying to save for profit companies that can give a fying f**k about you.
