Final Fantasy 7 and Hexen will receive AI-enhanced HD Texture Packs, first screenshots

Yesterday we informed you about a new HD Texture Pack for Max Payne. And today, I’m happy to report that modders are currently working on AI-enhanced HD texture packs for two classic games; Final Fantasy 7 and Hexen.

Let’s start with the Final Fantasy 7 HD Texture Pack. This pack will be created by CaptRobau, will be using Gigapixel and after some initial tests CaptRobau was able to upscale FF7’s low-res pre-rendered field backgrounds by 400%.

On the other hand, the Hexen HD Texture Pack is created by grandgreed and will be Neural Upscaling techniques, similar to those that were used for the HD Texture Pack for Doom. According to the modder, the main purpose of this pack will be the “preservation of details and lack of third-party modifications, only close view of what was conceived by designers since the beginning.”

There isn’t currently any ETA on when these HD Texture Packs will be released but we’ll be sure to keep you posted. Until then you can find below some comparison screenshots between the vanilla and the modded versions of Final Fantasy 7 and Hexen.

Here are some additional screenshots from the modded versions of these two games.

  1. No interest in the Final Fruitery games but Hexen looks good. I missed playing that one back in the day. Was it good? The reviews say it was pretty bad but it may have been patched since then.

    1. Well, imagine having weak ineffective weapons mostly melee, imagine all enemies being taller than you and take alot of hits, imagine all maps being dark corridors where you have to find some switches in order to unlock 1/5 of the puzzle, imagine having to look around to find those switches, but wait there is more, those switches could open up something in some other level so you have to go back through multiple levels to figure out if something opened and look for switches there that were visible before.

In other words its the dark souls of finding switches and where to go…..not to mention everything looks alike.

    2. It’s a nice game. Give it a try if possible.

If you can somehow grab a HEXEN.wad file from the Internet, and then install the “Doomsday” engine, and place the above .wad file under it’s directory, then you should be able to play the game/demo (if you want to try it)

  2. Blood Omen 1 and Soul Reaver 1 would also benefit tremendously from higher rez textures. Same with System Shock 1.

    1. GOD YES!!! I love Blood Omen 1, super underrated game, and a pain to run on newer systems. Too bad it never released on GOG or Steam.

  3. someone thought “lets improve the textures of a game that all characters look like they run on a different graphics engine” Surely that wont make it look weird.

Also someone else thought “you know what needs texture upping? None of those classisc old school fps, but the one no one plays and has the least amount of videos and mods.

    1. On the forum, it says that the initial release should see the light of day in a week or two if I`m not mistaken.

      1. Originally said “is” but it’s been changed. Incorrect or not, it didn’t read right.

        Good info though.

    1. The nice thing with FFIX if I remember correctly. SE said they actually made the assets in 1080p. Shouldn’t be too hard

      1. Those assets are mostly lost. Square didn’t made a backup of them and the HDD they were stored on got destroyed. That’s why the remaster just uses upscaled PS1 assets.

  4. Indeed. It’s a very good dark fantasy old-school shooter though. I played this game few months back, but I would love to try this new “HD Texture Pack”, provided it is finished and released to the public. *nostalgia*

  5. Waiting someone working texture mods for NOLF1…and final fantasy 8 and old resident evil too and dino crisis…
