Epic Games signs a publishing deal with Remedy, Playdead and the creators of The Last Guardian

Epic Games has announced that it will publish new titles from Gen Design (creators of The Last Guardian) Playdead and Remedy Entertainment. The projects will be released under Epic Games Publishing, a new multiplatform publishing effort with a developer-first approach.

According to the press release, developers will retain 100% of all intellectual property and full creative control of their work. Epic Games Publishing will cover up to 100% of development costs, from developer salaries to go-to-market expenses such as quality assurance, localization, marketing, and all publishing costs.

Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games, said:

“We’re building the publishing model we always wanted for ourselves when we worked with publishers.”

Hector Sanchez, head of Epic Games Publishing, added:

“Gen DESIGN, Remedy, and Playdead are among the most innovative and talented studios in the industry, with strong visions for their next games. They will have full creative control, while Epic will provide a solid foundation of project funding and services.”

Lastly, Epic will release two games from Remedy for next-gen consoles and PC. The first project is a “AAA multi-platform game” already in pre-production and the second is a “smaller-scale” project. Both of these games will be using the Northlight Engine.

        1. I think Control is a game that will slowly sell for a long time. People are interested in it, it’s just taking time for them to pick it up. I’ll play it eventually. Just been waiting on a sale.

          1. I played it, is all right (kinda boring and repetetive, if it wasnt for the raytracing meme nobody would give a single f/ck), your usual Remedy game (TPS focus on story with a gimmick mechanic and a protagonist with a cool jacket). They still didnt surpass Max Payne IMHO.

          2. Nothing sells slowly for a long time. Its put on a Xbox game pass, or humble bundle, or PS+, or will be on sale for 5$ 1000x in the future.
1 million sales at 60$ is a far cry from 1 million sales at 5$.That is why lifetime sale numbers are kinda pointless. Its mainly about the first week or two of launch. Everything after that is peanuts. why do you think so many companies went to mandatory DLC, then to Mx, then to these horrid GAS games?

        2. that’s the thing about game journalism nowadays, you never know what is a flop and what is not. reviews are not trustworthy anymore as they hold different opinions based on the criteria imposed by hidden agendas. sales is the next best barometer of gamers’ opinion.

      1. They made money, but the game bombed. If they’re in it for the money, go for it. I’d have more integrity tbh.

      1. On consoles probably but not on PC. Sure, they got millions for the EGS exclusivity deal but I doubt that many people bought it on the store.

    1. maybe they’ll make a comeback with ALAN WAKE 2 ?
it was a good game. although the game was advertised as ” a psychological action thriller” it was not an action title, nor was it a thriller or even psychological horror for that matter. it was what it was and I respect it for that. the atmosphere, the visuals, the voice acting, and the story (with the exception of the horrible supernatural elements) were fantastic. I just really wish the story had more psychological depth to it so that it could make the story more personal and engaging.

    2. Snake56
      ” I guess I was wrong.”

they can do whatever they want with their money. they’re not even reading everyone’s comments and it shows. people gotta care so much.

both sony, microsoft, nintendo, epic, steam, uplay, origin, EA, Walt Disney, and apple, are trading in their sour customers for a wider group. it’s the oldest business move. the whole business world does this already with their money.

      1. I will be honest I like GOG Galaxy v2 and CD Projekt RED as a game developer a lot but I have bought very few games from GOG simply because other than them offering DRM Free older games they do not add as much value to my gaming experience as Steam does. Steam does everything better and has thousands and thousands more games on top of having most of the games that are available on GOG. Then there is also the matter of will GOG exist in 5 or 10 years or will they be forced to close because of increased competition in the PC Gaming Digital space.

    1. Steam isn’t the best, or even good, it’s just the lesser of two evils.

(As for GOG, f*k them, they called GG a harasment movement)

    2. Well… There is a more ethical way.

      Steam=buy
Not steam = wait for it to come out on steam.

BL3. Waiting was a good thing. Bugs out and ulitmate edition for 50$.
I also have no problem waiting a year for Savage Planet.

  1. I don’t care if it’s coming to EGS or Steam or whatever store, will buy it if the games are good. Period.

    1. Sounds like EA and MS’s strat. Remember what EA did to Respawn?, make sure both their games sell horribly and then buy them up when they are left to the side.

  2. I didn’t care very much for Control. I played it for approximately 8 hours waiting for something exciting to happen and convince me to play more but it was simply too boring. the animations in particular (much like in QB) were quite awful. the protagonist, aside from the usual arguments on DSOG which I partially happen to agree with , was just too bland a character to care about
I might return to it someday. I had a similar experience with the first Evil Within but the second time I followed through and I am glad that I did.

  3. Congratulations, Epic’s new developer-first program is a great way to support talented developer teams such as Remedy and Gen Design, I bet Remedy is working on Alan Wake 2 currently.

  4. So basically this sounds like Epic is trying to make themselves their own secured war chest, but this time it has no chance of going anywhere else on PC, yet still securing mad bank on consoles….

Honestly, this feels like the worst news in a decade, because unlike other publishers, Epic doesn’t want to work with anyone else on PC. They just want to be the only store selling anything.

With this news though, I don’t think I need to buy anything from Remedy, or those other studios, ever again.

  5. PC is a platform, and the consoles. So it will be on all of them. That’s multi-platform by definition.

  6. reading comment here I’m happy to say I’m having fun all steam fanboy crying lol they don’t understand that competition is great maybe in the near future steam will sign a contract with sony to release some 1st party game studio on steam

      1. I don’t care about learning English i speak 5 already so I’m happy if you feel offended, there is a block button you can press it

        1. >offended
          >block button
Nah, is fine…i prefer to burn my eyes reading you than acting like a snowflake.

  7. Trashy SJW developer Remedy gonna cough up even more dull Control/Quantum Break reskins only on Epic store. Can’t wait.

  8. Here yee here yee, You too can stop this madness. If you see anyone in your house playing fortnite, be sure to beat them to a bloody pulp. If you see any of your friends as well, unfriend them and shame them. This is the only way to stop this Epic Madness. For without all that Fornite Money Printing PRESS money epic couldn’t have done any of this BS they are currently doing. 5 years ago they were begging for us to embrace them and now they have untapped power they have gone quite mad with it. This will only get worse.

  9. Ok, i know i’ll be downvoted, but this is much more honest way to do things from Epics side. They paying for development and publishing and giving the IPs to devs. I will be forever against exclusivity though.

  10. Simply send your suggestions via email, I’m reading them ;). There is no reason to post them here (I’m saying this because I have to constantly manually approve them, re-approve them once there is a change, and then re-moderate them once you delete them).
