Dying Light – Now Coming Exclusively To Current-Gen Platforms, “Old-Gen Couldn’t Run The Game”

Techland today announced that Dying Light, the first-person zombie action survival game, will be released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, while development on the previously announced Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions has now ceased.

The reason for Techland’s revised publishing plan has been explained in an open letter to fans:

Dear Gamers,
As you probably know, we’re wrapping up the development of Dying Light, our biggest and most ambitious project to date. We spent the last three years making sure that all the features of our game add up to create a truly next-gen experience.

Much of this “next-gen feel” is tightly connected to the technological side of Dying Light. For instance, up to 200 000 objects can be displayed in the game at once. Add to this our use of realistic, physics-based lighting technology and you really start to push the next-gen systems to the limits. Features like these along with our core gameplay pillars – such as the player-empowering Natural Movement, threefold character development system, and vast open world – are all an inherent part of how Dying Light plays. However, combining all of these into one fluid experience is only possible on technologically advanced platforms.

Therefore, after thorough internal testing, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to leave past-gen systems behind and release Dying Light exclusively on the next-gen consoles and PC. Put simply, older consoles just couldn’t run the game and stay true to the core vision of Dying Light at the same time.

To ensure you enjoy Dying Light as much as we would like you to, we chose to release it without any compromises on the three strongest systems available. Thanks to this, you’ll get the full and best experience regardless of the platform you play on.

We hope you understand the hard choice we’ve had to make. With the launch just around the corner, we can’t wait to show you Dying Light in the state it was meant to be. We’re looking forward to your reactions and impressions as we release the game in January 2015.

Dying Light for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC will be released in 2015 on January 27th in the Americas, January 28th in Australia and New Zealand, and January 30th in Europe and Asia.

  1. Jee, who didn’t see that coming lol. I guess they didn’t want to go for the silky smooth 20 fps from the last gen lol. But not to worry, im sure the silky smooth 30 fps on the current consoles will be just as cinematic!

    1. mmmm only “NG” for my smells like another “forget to get a good optimized pc port”…… but let’s see….

    2. Your right…and the crowd hoes wild!…wait!!!…….damn, a XB1 version to hold the PS4 version back.

I kid on you Microsoft Xbox One…..just joking.

  2. this is more like it, the sooner last gen gets put to rest the better, she had a good run, now time to put the ol dog down

    1. I totally agree they need to focus on this gen only… Got maybe a few games so far since 2013 that show what the start of this gen should be… Gonna say infamous, killzone, and Lords of the Fallen

  3. Good now Ill buy this and dead island 2. I wasnt going to purchase this knowing it was going to be held back by last gen.. good to hear good news!!! Lets up microsoft doesnt slip their filthy little hands in their pockets and gimp Ps4 and PC versions

  4. Good to hear!!! Now I can purchase both this and dead island 2 knowing we wont get gimped versions. Lets just hope Microsoft doesnt slip their dirty lil hands in their pockets and gimp the PS4 AND PC versions

        1. Besides liking your own comment and again as a guest, it shows the level of intelligence you exude, especially your comment and retraction of that comment. Pathetic child.

I was raised in South Phoenix, you think I care what color a person is?

    1. So the 5 people who like it, liked it when it originally had a racial slur. Unfortunately I did not have the page still loaded with the original quote. He has since edited it. Even sadder still are the fact his 6 only likes come from other racists and him being a racist.

      1. That’s an awesome idea. If that’s what you meant.

Too bad Disqus removed the number value of a down vote.

I honestly liked the original system better.
Seems down votes cause suicidal thoughts.

  5. well game isnt coming out till spring anyway so most people should just get current gen systems by then anyway.

there are CONSTANT deals for trading in ps3/xbox360 and getting huge discounts on the new systems.
might as well get them i dont know why most people would hold on to their old consoles past 2014

  6. so, they cancelled last gen version, but it’s for piracy i bet, new DRM like lords of the fallen and fifa 15 is the proof that nobody can’t crack them (at least in past two months), new gen consoles and thier big Day1 patches which serves as some kind of new DRM. it’s not bad, at least it wont affect legit buyers and it doesn’t have always online crap in it.

  7. I enjoyed most games on 360/ps3 but yeah Dev’s needs to move on. It’s just to me the current Xbox1/PS4 are not the huge leaps we seen From xbox/ps2 to 360/ps3.

It’s just a shame that the Majority of Dev’s are holding PC versions back even with Current Console hardware.

    1. Obviously as graphics get closer to reality the difference wont be as clear. And also, the new generation isn’t nearly as powerful as the last one in relation.
