Destiny 2 feature 2

Destiny 2 – There will be no recoil on all weapons on the PC when using mouse+keyboard [UPDATE: There will be]

It appears that Bungie and Vicarious Visions (the team handling the PC version) are doing their best to make Destiny 2 feel like a PC shooter. And while the game does come with a FOV and a respectable amount of options to tweak, it also comes with a “feature” that may disappoint a lot of PC gamers. According to Destiny 2’s project lead, Mark Noseworthy, there will be no recoil on all weapons on the PC version.

As Mark Noseworthy told Finder, this was decision was made because Vicarious Visions thought that recoil doesn’t feel good while gaming with mouse+keyboard.

“For instance, there’s no recoil on guns on PC because recoil on the controller feels really good. ‘I’m firing, I’m firing, I’m firing, oh, I’m losing control of my gun a little bit.’ That feels great, especially with magnetism and all the magic in the controller that makes you feel it. With a mouse and keyboard, you don’t want the mouse moving without you moving it, so recoil doesn’t feel good, so there is no recoil on PC.”

Noseworthy concluded that there will be no recoil on all weapons, and that the team wants to make it so Destiny 2 feels native to the PC platform, because it wants people to feel like Destiny 2 is built for PC.

To be honest, I never really noticed the lack of recoil. And yes, some of the E3 2017 gameplay videos confirm that there is no recoil on the PC version (as you can see in the following video).

Now while I don’t agree with Noseworthy regarding recoil (PC has seen a lot of realistic shooters with proper recoil that feels great with mouse+keyboard), I always felt that Destiny 2’s combat mechanics felt great on the PC. Yes, there is no recoil and if it wasn’t for this interview, only a few PC gamers would have noticed such a thing.

On the other hand, we can easily notice that there is recoil on weapons in this PC video, however we don’t know whether this player was using mouse+keyboard or a controller (recoil may be present when using a controller on the PC).

UPDATE:

Destiny 2’s PC project lead has tweeted that the PC version will feature recoil, though it will be heavily modified in order to provide a better gaming experience on the PC.

  1. As if I needed more incentives not to buy this game. This is what I feared when I saw footage earlier. It looks like you’re just dragging your mouse pointer over enemies and clicking them to death rather than wielding cool weapons. Just Cause 3 has the same problem.

    1. Sure, but at least Diablo is about clicking on enemies, directions, etc. & then keyboard-whamming them to death.

Or maybe that’s my WoW veteran side talking….. I mean, who doesn’t love a good keyboard-mashing skin-of-your-teeth boss kill? 😀

  2. Is it opposite day? Next he’ll tell us PC is getting mandatory massive aim acceleration to help our lowly mice keep up with the speed & precision of thumbsticks.

  3. This is the stupidest sh*t I’ve ever read, like seriously.
“For instance, there’s no recoil on guns on PC because recoil on the controller feels really good.”

    1. Right cause we cannot use a controller we can only play with K&M
    2. So just because it feels “better” on controller means that on PC recoil doesn’t “feel good” or adds to the experience?
    3. If anything, recoil on K&M is way better and easier to control. With no recoil at all, people
    will just headshot everything.
    4. Why do such drastic differences between the same game on different platforms even
    exist?

This is freaking stupid. At least give us the OPTION to enable it.
Honestly, it doesn’t bother me that much, but it’s completely unnecessary and it will piss a lot of people off.

    1. It sounds absolutely stupid, but I find it better suited for an MMO game where all the enemies are bullet sponges. spending so many hours trying to teach your hand to git gud at recoil balance and twitch timing is and should always be reserved for games like ARMA/CSGO and in some instances, CoD and Battlefield.

I find it quite pointless to force in heavy recoil so other players can tell people to “git gud” at controlling recoil for their weapons in a game that features nothing but heavy bullet sponges.

  4. Don’t you just love it when game devs tell you before the release that their game will blow?

    1. Bungie: “Guys, after you preorder the game and receive your copy, just go to the nearest toilet and throw it in there. That’s how you unlock the Season Pass™.”

  5. A peasant shooter with no recoil and no dedicated servers will feel like a PC game? Haha f*ck no.

  6. “Magic in a controller.”

Aim assist is not magic, it’s a bad solution to making FPS on a controller not suck.

    1. Ah, but you’re forgetting the magic of bullet magnetism! Suck at aiming? No worries; mag- ehm, magnetism will make up for that!

  7. “… I never really noticed the lack of recoil”

Tell you what, the first thing I noticed when I was watching Jackfrag’s video about a week ago was the absence of recoil. Unlike arena shooter, since mobility is very limited no recoil means no aim skill-play in any modern fps (which features reload, sprint, ads, etc.)

So, yeah the developer just want you to grind like fat dairy cows to milk money from. Good marketing tactics employed by the likes of japanese grindy game devs to be honest.

    1. Agreed. Those comments from Mark Noseworthy were silly. Is this really the way that Console Developers reason when it comes to PC?

      1. Imagine a bunch of space aliens observing humans from afar and making hilariously wrong interpretations of human behavior, Bungie seems to be doing that with PC gaming.

        1. Setting: Alien in a UFO inspecting everyday human items.

          *Alien picks up a shoelace*

What is this strange contraption? Is this how they floss their *sses?

    1. Only if you got even a modicum of actual FPS skillz.

If you’re a scrub, which is exactly the demographic that Activision-Blizzard actively targets these days, then it’s a great call to make.

  8. Just give us the option in the menu. It’s easily done, the recoil is in there and they’re actively turning it off themselves. Don’t, let us do it if we want (we won’t). Simple. Everyone is happy and it still looks like they’re trying to make the PC port stand out.

  10. Anthem already looks better lol. oh wait, Destiny 2 is on Battlenet which is filled with junkies that buy anything there sadly. it is even worse than Fifa/Sims junkies on Origin…

  11. For those thinking recoil is amazing and superior to non recoil, think it over for a second.

This game is an MMO, not ARMA, not a real time tactics sim, where each bullet counts and changes everything, this is a game where everything acts like a bullet sponge, so in essence you’d want to spend your time hitting said bullet sponge rather than firing your guns all over the place like a kid with an AK-47.

I want a space MMO shooter, not ARMA, you want ARMA go back to your real life military sim games.

  12. The issue with what a lot of people are recommending that we have an option for it to be turned on or off in menu will completely break PVP. You think i’m turning on recoil to be competitive not. But I rather its on for everyone, I want a fair playing ground

  13. when it comes to shooting games on consoles, aiming and pressing button is as complex as it gets, peasant mind is not capable of handling recoil, i mean even without recoil headshot percentage in their games are something like 10-20 percent

  14. “With a mouse and keyboard, you don’t want the mouse moving without you moving it”

    Note to Noseworthy:
PC gaming is about providing gamers with choice so to decide things for themselves. Your attitude of “you don’t want” is wholly misguided. It may be something that YOU don’t personally prefer but that doesn’t mean everybody else should be forced in to following your personal preference.

You’re trying to impress PC gamers with giving us adjustable FOV, high frame-rate, etc which is all great and yet this news shows that some of the console-centric ‘we know what’s good for you’ nannying attitude still prevails.

      1. The article has since been updated with the good news that they’ve backed down and will after all be doing the right thing. Wonders never cease!

Gotta laugh at the PR spin they’ve put on the announcement in order to save Noseworthy from appearing to have been totally humiliated which of course he has been.

        1. “heavily modified”
“in order to provide a better gaming experience on the PC.”

Console ports never cease to generate the most hilarious of f*cking stories imaginable 😀

          1. Indeed! The other laughable nonsense in their briefly worded climbdown is the reference to Destiny 2 allegedly set to feature “awesome M/KB gameplay that still feels like Destiny”. He appears to have forgotten the prescient point that PC gamers, whether using M/KB or not, won’t be aware of what Destiny “feels like” on our platform because Activision held it prisoner to consoles. D’oh!

          2. It was probably Bungie, actually, as Activision, being the money-grubbing wh*res they are, probably wanted it on PC, but Bungie being a 10-year console veteran by that point decided it wasn’t worth the hassle (& good riddance to it).

          3. Whatever the explanation of who’s ultimately to blame I’m just happy to sit back in amusement. I personally couldn’t care less about the Destiny franchise but I’m pleased it’s coming to PC because,

            a. it being another sure sign of the commercial importance of PC to the triple-A games industry and thus making it a more attractive platform to the mainstream consumer

            b. the salty tears of the console brand fanboys due to PC being the only platform where Destiny 2 can be played at a proper frame-rate. Digital Foundry has already indicated that it’s pretty much a given that even the Xbone X version will be running at the usual console-tastic 30fps.

          4. The salty tears of the console plebeian fanboys generated by the thought of losing out yet another exclusive, indeed ^^

          5. An FPS at 30 FPS……

It’s like those “we heard” puns…. “Say, we heard you like FPS, so we decided to put some FPS in your FPS, so you can FPS while you FPS!”

    1. Console game devs are used to talking down to their consumers–who just nod and drink whatever Kool-Aid they’re sold–whereas PC gamers don’t tolerate that sh!t.

      1. Precisely. They’re used to dealing solely with obedient consumers already brainwashed in to being treated like crap by the console platform holders so it comes as a shock to their system whenever they try doing the same to PC gamers.

        1. The same consumers who were told that 30fps is superior (“cinematic”)to 60+fps and they actually regurgitated those lines.

It’s what happens when consumers buy into a single product, are then locked into that walled garden and then are pretty much forced into defending the practices and rhetoric of the hardware/software manufacturers.

Those consumers don’t know what it means to have choice and for a platform(PC in this case) to have competition within that sphere vying for your dollars. With console it’s very much a “take it or leave it” attitude which I stopped tolerating after the SNES generation.

          1. So very true. On a related note, I did chuckle that time when an Ubisoft dev’ went on record in slamming PS4 and Xbone for having such an abysmal CPU. The very same abysmal AMD Jaguar that Sony and Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have persisted with in PS4 Pro and Xbone X respectively. Hence for why the 30fps games keep on coming. Jesus wept.

  15. No recoil is something for consoles, recoil means they have to be better with thumbsticks, while on mouse you can correct your aiming much faster.
That is why I cant understand why no recoil on PC, to please console gamers?

  16. “because it wants people to feel like Destiny 2 is built for PC.”

Good old AAA devs, always taking shortcuts ^^

    Also;

    “especially with magnetism”

Sh*t, bullet magnetism is really becoming a thing on plebeian FPSs, isn’t it?

  17. “Vicarious Visions (the team handling the PC version)”

whelp… there goes any hope of it being a good port.

  18. UPDATE:

Destiny 2’s PC project lead has tweeted that the PC version will feature recoil, though it will be heavily modified in order to provide a better gaming experience on the PC.

As long as it’s not like we’re using Ak-47’s for every gun then I can see it working out well. Just don’t ramp up the recoil to a point where people have to work out some stupid regiment like we’re playing for CSGO finals.

    1. I honestly prefer little recoil as I’m not playing Dark souls shoot em ups. I like my challenges, just not in the gun itself, because I know I’ve multiple challenges outside of using a gun.

  19. Mark Noseworthy represents everything that is wrong with the gaming industry.

That single quote might be the dumbest, idiotic, and DANGEROUS thing I have ever read from a game developer. I honestly hope he contracts an incurable disease because of it. That is how strongly I disagree with him and his entire outlook.

  20. You’re so awesome! I don’t believe I have read a single thing like that before. So great to find someone with some original thoughts on this topic. Really.. thank you for starting this up. This website is something that is needed on the internet, someone with a little originality!
