Death Stranding’s director Hideo Kojima talks about why he likes complex games

Death Stranding is the forthcoming exploration game developed by Kojima Productions. It’s the first game from Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions after leaving Konami back in 2015.  It is really admirable that within this time Kojima created a new studio and a new IP.

While on his Death Stranding tour, Hideo Kojima, the writer, director and producer of Death Stranding, gave an interview to BAFTA in London. They asked him why he likes to create complex games with multilayered storytelling.

“I think simplicity is good, but it gets consumed very quickly. It’s like food: anything that’s really digestible, it just goes out. And it doesn’t remain in the body. But something that’s awkward, that is not really digestible, it remains in your body. And you don’t know what it is. And human has this intellectual feeling that kind of lingers: what is this? Like for instance a movie, if that lingers in you, you watch it again over and over, or you talk with your friends about them, what was that about? Or maybe take time to rewatch again, or rethink of it again. And you kind of start to understand the real meaning. And it begins to be a real body, your blood and meat. And it remains in your body fluid, and not just comes out. And I want to create that kind of thing.

I grew up watching movies or things like that, so I just do that in games. Everyone says it’s complicated, but I think everyone should just keep it and maybe nourish it for five or ten years, and maybe they will start to understand. And I really want to create those kind of things.

I think stimulation is needed to grow. You kind of find out things you don’t know, that’s why you grow. So anything you know, or anything [that’s] easy to eat, you won’t grow. Or your brain won’t grow. It won’t be an experience. So sometimes I want people to kind of eat something that is not really easy to digest. But I really want to make that thing delicious, mind you.”

    1. I haven’t played the game yet but I expect that it will have mechanics that will take a while for players to figure out how to use effectively or understand their purpose. MGS V was kind of like that.

Based on the few reviews I’ve checked out they have tried to make the gameplay loop about the thing that people generally take for granted in games: traversing the terrain. As a gameplay concept it might have more in common with Spintires than 3rd person shooters.

Storywise Kojima’s stuff is always completely bonkers and that’s another thing that will keep people talking about it. I don’t think it’s usually well written but it’s always interesting and different from the mainstream game plotlines.

    2. its a social commentary on how the world is divided, the working class is the one is who should unite the world one package at a time, not politicians, i dont think people who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth are gonna understand and appriciate this game to the fullest, its a game the working class can relate.

          1. So going by your logic anyone who doesn’t understand and doesn’t appreciate the game to its fullest “was born with a silver spoon in their mouth” as in rich and with parents doing everything for them?

Isn’t it that you’re simply delirious and you’re trying to climb some mirrors?

          2. “anyone who doesn’t understand and doesn’t appreciate the game to its
fullest “was born with a silver spoon in their mouth” as in rich and
with parents doing everything for them?”

that and also simple minded people like you.

          3. simple minded, rofl you don’t even know me you stupid kiddo, playing the edgy card, fck off with that childish attitude honestly, and go play the japanese boy somewhere else, this ain’t no place for you.

          4. im not gonna argue with you, seeing how in the dumbf*k department, you have beaten me with experience.

          5. Yeah so what? I love metal gear solid, but i don’t use that to excuse everything Kojima does, or labelling it as superior.

          6. MGS 5 was ok honestly, it didn’t really need to be “open world” and the plot could’ve been completed, but not only kojima is to blame for that.

          7. its not the open world that was the problem it was the fact that 70% of the game which was very long nothing happened story wise and it was patched up in the last minute, it wasnt that impressive and it was very repetitive lacking good ideas.

          8. it just wasn’t as linear as MGS should’ve been, and that kinda damaged the character of the videogame making it too dispersive and kinda long with no reason like you said (although i appreciated its length, since nowadays we’re full of sht games that last 6hrs at best)

It still remains the worst title of the saga tho, nothing compared to the first, third and fourth.

          9. Exactly, it’s you already praising it, i’m just cautious, indeed i never said it’s bad, it doesn’t look that good from the first videos, but besides that we’ll see when it’s out.

          10. and the dumb fck says this about a hideo kojima game, here is a blank paycheck hideo, and hideo is like “here is a blank plot”

          11. ” i dont think people who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth are gonna understand and appriciate this game to the fullest, its a game the working class can relate.”

Mate all games journalists are middle upper class soy hipsters and socialists, the working class is rough, anti pc and nationalistic.

            YOU MORON.

Its the other way around. The working class are not globalists.

        1. It’s often this way with Kojima games. Butthurt fanboys crying on the internet that not everybody worships the work of their self-appointed idol as much as they do.

Their mental gymnastics are about as contrived as Kojima’s plots!

Kojima fanboys are even more obsessive than the worst of the CD Projekt Red fanboy army.

      1. helicopter sounds in the background. Marx tried that comrade and he failed people like each other more based on nationality than class.

    3. kojima games aren’t mechanically complex, they just have more creative variation compared to the bog standard western counterparts, another thing famous from his game is just that they have cool cinematic married with convoluted story telling that try to mix western themes/background with eastern asian cultures.

      1. Ironically, the “cinematic storytelling” of MGS1 helped to set the stage for the flood of mediocre “cinematic” action games and dumbed-down RPGs to follow.

  1. “It’s the first game from Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions after leaving Konami back in 2015. It is really admirable that within this time Kojima created a new studio and a new IP.”

Maybe a response to those who accused him of slacking off at Konami and his firing being deserved.

  2. Yeah his games are truly unique. I remember playing all metal gear games and I thought what the hell ?? How can it be so good. Old games but behind the scenes so good. Guns of the patriots game is just spectacular.

    1. My favourite game was MGS 2 and MGS 3 when I played with PS2. I rented PS3 during my college holidays to play the MGS4 to complete the story. I am satisfied that I played this games and enjoyed!!

      1. Yeah the games had some sort of magic, I just dont know how to explain it, but it was so good, sons of liberty was also really good. Ehhh all of them are good 😀

  3. The story is definitely complex and will keep people talking about it after the game ends. But the core gameplay mechanic is just too tedious and repetitive.

  4. Kojima is a hack who makes overly convoluted storylines solely so he can stroke his own ego. You only ever get about 1/3rd of a game when you buy one of his movies.

    1. Not necessarily to stroke his own ego, but just because it’s the kind of thing he likes, like he says in the interview.

Whenever a writer makes something vague and overconvoluted to let the audience fill in the blanks, it can feel like the writer is getting undeserved praise for minimal effort, and maybe they are, but that doesn’t mean that it was all a cynical plot to be adulated for deeper meanings that he didn’t actually bother to think of, it could be just that he enjoys filling in the blanks of other people’s work and so he tries to make something along the lines of what he enjoys as a consumer.

  5. “i like complex games”

“HIDEO KOJIMA & DEATH STRANDING: Bridging the Worlds of Film and Games ”

    Hours of walking around.

    Godamn it Hideo.

  6. I did not play those but MGS Revengeance was pretty dope all with Mecha Cyborg Military action and Raiden and they didn’t finish the project, Platinum games did which was expected given their reputation of good games.
