Croteam surprised us today as it released the source code of the Serious Engine v1.10 for free to everyone. This engine was used to create both Serious Sam Classic: The First Encounter and The Second Encounter.
As Croteam noted:
“Serious Engine v1.10 is very well commented, easy to modify, and there are lots of user generated mods out there. This version has everything you need to build your own game – or just experiment.”

You’re right, DSO, I am interested to make my own games or at least experiment. I don’t have any coding skills and my experience with modding all ended in failures(my only success was inserting a shipping container in Arma 2) but I would like to try again.
If I were you, I would go with UE4, not Serious Engine which is too niche.
As far as I know you can do very much without programming in UE4.
I was thinking of making small, simple games that can be run on old or low spec PCs for my class.
I’m not ignoring modern engine, though. Once I’m ambitious enough then I’ll move to the modern engines.
The modern engines have better documentation and accessibility for people like you.
