Borderlands 4 will now be released on September 12th

In a deleted tweet, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford revealed that Borderlands 4 will now come out on September 12th. The game was originally meant to come out on September 23rd. So, this means that its release date was moved up by 11 days.

It’s worth noting that Sony announced a State of Play for Borderlands 4 for tomorrow. So, my guess is that the new release date will be officially revealed tomorrow during that event.

Borderlands 4 aims to bring fast action, new Vault Hunters, and billions of crazy weapons to a brand-new planet ruled by a mean and powerful villain. Players will get to use strong special moves, and build their characters with skill trees. They will also beat enemies using new cool skills.

The game will support both solo and co-op modes. In co-op, you can team up with up to three other players.

Finally, Borderlands 4 promises to pack free-form combat and exploration, pulse-pounding boss fights, infinitely varied loot drops, and an eclectic cast of unforgettable characters new and old.

Although it has not been officially confirmed yet, Borderlands 4 is most likely using Unreal Engine 5. Thus, I’m curious to see whether it will take advantage of Lumen and Nanite.

For those wondering, the game will hit Steam at launch. So no, this won’t be locked behind Epic Games Store. Also, Gearbox hasn’t yet shared the game’s PC requirements. Naturally, we’ll be sure to share them once they come out.

Stay tuned for more!

    1. True, but this one is scaling back on the stup1dity and looks a bit more serious, looks like they felt the backlash for 3, so for now it still has a chance of being a decent looter shooter to k1ll some time.

  1. Well its almost a given that this was a call based on internal knowledge of GTA VI release date. Couldnt imagine anything else moving it. So late Sep/early Oct for GTA VI and probably the only thing coming out around it will be super different genre or a sports/sim game. Probably also locks Mafia OC for August and nothing else major for about 4 weeks whenever they decide to drop. Still interested in BL4 since I don't plan to pick up a console any time soon.

  2. I don’t get the appeal of cell shaded graphics. Especially when the game was still very demanding. It was neat and unique at first. But now it just means visuals are going to be limited.

    1. POS like Borderlands gives the meaning of "cel-shaded graphics" a bad reputation, and I've been saying that for a very long while now.

If you look at games like Zelda Wind Waker, it not only does cel-shaded graphics right, its graphics are timeless, and even to this very day it hasn't aged that much and still looks good, very good even.

Or if you want an FPS game with better cel-shading, The Darkness 2 also looks better than Borderlands.

There are other cel-shaded games (regardless of genre) that look better than Borderlands. Even for its time when it was first released in 2009, Borderlands never did cel-shading right, and now in 2025 it only looks worse and gives the term "cel-shaded graphics" a very bad reputation.

  3. I hope this time the bad guys are not ridiculous, the gunplay and playable characters in 3 were great. And Tiny Tina Wonderlands new mechanics were refreshing. But they can't keep failing in writing.

    1. you know looking back at BL3, I don't think the twins were that bad it's just that Jack was a tough act to follow after him being considered one of the best antagonists of all time. I think the worst parts of BL3 are being relegated to Lilith's errand boy and then the way they get rid of Maya for Ava. I largely think anything the twins did in that game weren't as bad as those previous 2 points.

      1. You are probably right, but their “content creator” vibes are very cringy, they were a disappoint.
The Maya part still hurts, it felt very freely, unjustified. They wanted a Roland 2.0 and it backfired.

        1. That’s fair and I never made that Roland Death connection but that makes a lot of sense why it felt so bad because it was handled so poorly in comparison. I think the content creator cringe thing was passable for me because I did only play it a few years after all the content was out and Streamer Culture was a lot more normalized. I did end up liking Wonderlands story/narrative for whatever reason in comparison I think just because you’re not narratively someone’s errand boy and there aren’t any cheap deaths so I want to be hopeful for 4 and that they’ve learned their lessons.
