BioShock Mod Removes 30FPS Cap From Its Physics Engine, Enables 60FPS/120FPS/144FPS

Bioshock fans, here is something special for you today. Steam’s member ‘Turtle [CPU Cool]’ has shared the following mod that is basically a must-have for everyone that wants to enjoy Irrational Games’ title. As the title suggests, this mod removes the 30fps cap from the game’s physics engine, and my God do the game’s physics look gorgeous at 144fps.

All you have to do is download the latest version of the Bioshock Physics Unlocker from GitHub, extract “BioshockPhysicsUnlocker.exe” to your Bioshock directory, and run the program.

The mod will ask you to choose what you want to set your new physics FPS to. Most gamers should simply type “60” for 60fps, though you can set the game’s physics engine to run at 120fps or 144fps.

Enjoy!

  1. Too bad the game is over rated garbage and literally a meme game. Also remember that this is one of the games that started the whole “its acceptable to be a linear story driven cinematic experience instead of a game ” meme that ruined last gen.

      1. Remember, it’s just an opinion. And not an elaborate one, he didn’t even explain why it was such garbage for him…

        1. actually i did. no ones explained why its good. *spoiler alert* only liberals like it at its socialism/communisim garbage.

          1. Wasn’t it an opportunist or capitalist who essentially lead the place to it’s downfall? In pursuit of profits, they tried to control everything. And it wasn’t so much an infiltration of someone unwanted, it was the epitome of the type of people they wanted in Rapture. It’s satirical in that there’s no such thing as a utopia because they needed a class system to serve the intellectuals who wouldn’t do the dirty work. Because of this, they had an inequality. The figure exploited that to gain control of that market.

          2. Frank Fontaine was in it for the payoff. He seemed like a communist from Ryan’s perspective because Frank rallied behind the proletariat. He exploited the inequality between classes – an issue arising out of bias selection. His exploits mirrored that of psychological manipulation he learned from Sophia Lamb.

Perhaps you could say communism had a had in destroying the city. I’d argue that it was Frank’s motive to competely disrupt the economy that turned his communist sprung leadership that was the real culprit. Communism ideals were a side effect of the manipulation and influence Frank had. He only espoused the ideals but never had any intention of bringing those to fruition. He intentionally drove people to war based on false promises.

Nowhere did I mention Atlus Shrugged. I just said utopias built on the foundation of only acquiring the best doesnt work. That’s where some draw parallels to Galts Gulch perhaps.

          3. For me it’s good because of its unique atmosphere, interesting story and ingenious weapons.
IDK why do you think the game is communistic.

    1. I thought the linear game that started it all was Half Life (HL fan here) and then Medal of Honor and so on…

    2. You are cancerous. There is jack sh*t wrong with games like that, some of the best games ever made are exactly what you just sh*t on pal.

    1. The graphics engine had the physics tied to the refresh rate and some other systems as well. Many games sync the physics to other systems in the game it’s just how engines work sometimes. Check out the physics in Fallout 4 with a high refresh rate, they get pretty f’ed up.

    1. Haha, what did put you off? I had Bioshock lying on a shelf, collecting dust. I couldn’t start playing it. Then I decided to overcome reluctance and installed the game. At first it seemed very outdated but when I got used to that fact, I got really engrossed.
I like how this game manages to show something new throughout its entire duration.
I really recommend that you try it.

      1. I don’t know, first it was the presentation. It had all that praise and whatnot and I couldn’t see what everyone was talking about. Especially when: after entering a city after a plane crash in the middle and down the bottom of a damn ocean, the protagonist JUST PICK A NEEDLE WITH MAGICAL STUFF AND PLUGS IN HIS ARM LIKE IT’S NORMAL. It felt lacking context. Perhaps I’m dumb and didn’t get it. But then again, people pitched to me like “comparable/better” to/than Half-Life” so it didn’t help (HL fan here).
And the so lauded writing and atmosphere, never got to me either because of that.

Then it was the shooting that got me. It felt so lackluster, I have
a weird idea on my mind that if it was melee only I would’ve liked it
        more.

Then the game felt waaaaay too easy and simple, then I started to feel quite bored and gave up.

I still want to play it one day, but I struggle to find a reason to do it.
I think Yahtzee put it best when he reviewed it : “I suppose if you got the Xbox version and are used to insipid boom fests like Halo, then BioShock will seem like the shit. But if you’re a long-time PC gamer spoiled by more complex FPS RPGs, then you’re in for a kick in the balls. Maybe a gentler kick in the balls than most. An extremely pretty, well executed kick in the balls, with the best of intentions, but at the end of the day you’re still walking funny.”

  2. That guys opinion was invalidated when he called Halo an insipid boom fest. The 1st Halo was genuinely a great game.

    1. Invalidating an opinion with another xD

I happen to think that Halo games are dull as f, but at least compelling enough for me to play having the opportunity (aka availability on PC lol).

  3. Yeah, but with HL2 even with the absurd situation it still gives a lot of context of what/why things happen that way. With Bioshock for me things happen because… I don’t know.

      1. I was about to comment about it being tongue-in-cheek lol. I love HL² to death but I never thought that the history was great, but it was how it is told along with the world building and the little details that grabbed me. That particular accident with the headcrab I saw as such a silly way to represent a butterfly effect that it just worked for me, like it was a thing that could happen.

About Bioshock, I’ll definitely will try it now that I see what it set up to do (and silly me for not seeing it first time u.u).

  4. >the protagonist
It is explained in the game, you just need to complete it.

    >writing and atmosphere
These two things are the strongest parts of Bioshock.

    >Then it was the shooting that got me.
Probably the weakest part of the game, but pretty much everything can be killed without shooting.

    >Then the game felt waaaaay too easy and simple
Play on Hard with disabled Vita Chambers. Won’t be too hard anyway, but some of the enemies like Rosies are hard to kill at first.

Bioshock is also shines in the other thing though. Just like HL2 every new level and area will have something new. It usually modifies the existing gameplay, and adds new enemies / weapons / abilities / gadgets.

    1. It was 60 FPS. It’s just when models moved, they looked like they were stuttering because the physics engine was locked. Unless you’re talking about xbox too?

      1. I don’t even remember that… to be fair I’m well known for having an awful memory haha.. I’m going to pop on bioshock when I get home and have a look for myself.

      2. also I was talking about the pc version… wow I played on 360 like what over 10 years ago now… I can’t barely remember those days.. Good weed, good times 😀

        1. Ah right. The 30 FPS physics lock is most noticeable when you pick up bodies or doodads with the telekinesis power. It stutters all over the screen.

          1. I do remember the amount of bugs and crashes when I played on pc.. and that save glitch.

Probably distracted me from the stutter lol

          2. Was that because of GFWL? I can’t remember if GFWL was on Bioshock 1. It was certainly on bioshock 2 but was later removed (I think GFWL was removed from Bio2 in recent years).

          3. Hmm i have a Steam version of the games which I got from a 2K humble bundle I think. I do remember something about removing the gfwl, I think I held off playing until that nonsense was removed.. thinking about it now it is likely that contributed to the issues.

There were riots in the steam forums over the issues… I forced myself to play the game through to the end and I experienced almost every bug known to man.

I must hate myself because I then went through it all again for bio2 lol

          4. I thought bioshock 2 was really great. Gun+mod combat was really well done. Lore was great too. Can’t recall why people didn’t like it as much. Maybe because it didn’t have as such a large twist?

  5. “Especially when: after entering a city after a plane crash in the middle and down the bottom of a damn ocean, the protagonist JUST PICK A NEEDLE WITH MAGICAL STUFF AND PLUGS IN HIS ARM LIKE IT’S NORMAL. It felt lacking context.”

There’s a reason for that. It’s explained in the game.

  6. Yea i saw that and i thought it was … Mmmmm… Stupid ?. I remember Reading about it too concerning NFS:Rivals. I just hate when they do that. Clearly, they do not have the pc platform in mind and just don’t want to put in the cash/manpower to make it work.

  7. I don’t want to spoil anything for you but you really should try to play to the end of the game as it explains why the protagonist didn’t mind using plasmids etc.

    1. @end0rphine:disqus @Latelistener:disqus @disqus_KRssgP14yG:disqus

Ohhh everything makes sense now, it was me just being dumb then. 😐

Well, thanks a lot you guys, now I have a least a reason to try it out again, since the major gripe I’ve had with the game was the overall presentation. I can easily deal with my other gripes now. 😀

      1. For what it’s worth I count Bioshock 1 as one of the best games of that generation alongside Mass Effect 1, Skyrim , Super Mario Galaxy. I really liked Bioshock including the atmosphere and the story tapes you find scattered through the game. I know it may look aged a little but it’s easy to down sample from a much higher than native resolution and I feel the visuals are still good enough to carry the game’s atmosphere.

We all appreciate different games so it may be this game isn’t for you but there’s a good chance you may enjoy it. I very rarely play through a game’s campaign more than once nowadays with games taking much longer to complete and the fact there’s so many games I want to play however I did complete Bioshock1 twice.
