According to some early reports, the PC version of Dishonored 2 is plagued with performance issues. Owners of high-end GPUs are witnessing underwhelming performance, with really low framerates (that are not justified by the game’s visuals). And it appears that Arkane Studios is aware of these performance issues.
According to Harvey Smith, co-creative director at Arkane Studios, the development team is currently investigating the PC performance issues that have been reported by those who have already played the game.

Regarding the Day-1 patch for Dishonored 2 that has been reported, Harvey Smith claimed that most of the stuff that will be featured in the Day-1 patch for consoles is already present in the PC version.

According to some users, the game is plagued with performance issues – even on Low settings – due to TXAA. TXAA is a really demanding AA solution and as some gamers discovered, this AA option is enabled even on the game’s Low preset setting.
Figured it out – it's the TXAA anti-aliasing. It uses it even on Low detail, and it's a hog even on my GTX 1060.

Keep fixing the bugs Arkane, while I gather my money by which time the game should be $30 🙂
Or wait for the Game of the year or complete edition a year from now at $25
Wtf it’s out already?
Preorders got access 1 day early, so not technically out, but in reality, it is.
Not that I have it, just read it today, when I looked to see if it required Steam.
Unfortunately it does.
“..it appears that Arkane Studios is aware of these performance issues.”
Yet they still released it, knowing it had them, as there’s no way they didn’t test these high end GPU’s.
The real reason for providing no review copies, is revealed.
I read that the performance issue were related to TXAA, is there anybody on this planet using that ? i mean…
TXAA off + HBAO off… still runs like crap… worst part is that even with a framerate of 80,you still suffer from heavy stuttering.
wtf is happening to pc optimization. RIP.
if TXAA are the main issue then we should see faster performance on AMD hardware since TXAA only run on nvidia gpu (kepler and above)
txaa the worst tech, just blurring image.
I disagree, when used right, TXAA is freaking gorgeous. Love using it in Black Flag.
“When used right”
Except using TXAA ‘right’ is super difficult, and puts really dumb restrictions on your art pipeline to minimize the temporal filter detecting geometric / textural detail as noise and smearing it out of existence every time the camera moves.
IMHO TXAA is one of those ‘great in theory, awful in practice’ type things. I really wish more focus was given on improving FXAA, or making MSAA and SMAA more viable on deferred renderers.
Why cant everyone just use SMAA or SMAAT2X (Crytek’s implementation). It has near FXAA performance, no blurring, and also stops some temporal aliasing.
normally with regular SMAA i can still see jaggies. crytek implementation probably one of the best. can anyone use Crytek implementation for free? also i think most developer probably did not care much about high quality AA because game development main focus still on console.
What? But TXAA is Nvidia exclusive? Why would AMD have problem too then?
Isn’t IdTech performance is almost always bad on AMD HW?
This one is a modified version of the IdTech5 (I think) so… ¯_(?)_/¯
Yeah, Carmack had a vendetta against AMD ever since a couple of their demo-booth guys leaked builds of the Doom 3 engine way before release.
Nvidia always have better support of OGL (ID Tech engine)
if the game actually run of OpenGL we could see even worse performance on AMD card. the game actually use DX11. go to youtube and try looking for Dishonored 2 pc gameplay with OSD enabled. the OSD clearly show D3D11 instead of DX11
He replayed to you 😀
“Nvidia always have better support of OpenGL (ID Tech engine)”
You might as well block me too :))
Oh you little rascal!
so its only one setting that is broken unlike deus ex that is fully broken and a performance hog without looking that good…anyway i never planned to use txaa it blurs even worst than fxaa
For those who pre-ordered I hope that IMPERIAL ASSASSIN’S PACK was worth it.
No, but my 26% off was 😀
There is a reason I don’t spend more than 30€ on a game now. Never buying from Steam or @ full price again. That’s what this industry taught me.
Oh you 😉
Applying pressure on the wound… where it hurts…to save lives 😉
Doesn’t seem horrible. GTX 1080 at 1440p on ultra with fps jumping between 60 and 70fps….
Performance slowly downgraded as I get into mid levels for me on my 1080 50 to 60 fps.
1080 is a top card and visuals don’t justify requirements.
1080 is high-end and this is HD resolution ffs. It is more than horrible. Idtech 5 is rubbish, even years of modifying doesn’t change that.
Where did i read of a day-one patch of 3gb? Can’t remember, anyone confirms that? If yes, we could maybe hope in some improvements, maybe affecting the framerate and the overall feeling. Downloaded this morning, but apparently my poor GTX 580 can’t do sht, and the mouse movements feels laggy, feels like vsync is 24/7 enabled.
Shame on you! Having worked in the game testing industry I can tell you publishers and developers are aware of 99% of the issues you will face on release day. The only reason they keep releasing such broken messes is because the ycan get away with it.
Playing the ingenue as if they suddenly discover those problems after weeks ( if not months ) of QA is beyond insulting.
Dishonored 2 (IdTech 5 – OpenGL)
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/cd8bb642fc2370f667e21f7af7d13e0aab605a6f129fb7fb047f42d0a46ab89f.png
What are you on about? He stated that it is running on id Tech 5… What’s your issue?
He thinks that ID Tech engine use DirectX instead of OpenGL. Only one family of engine which never use DirectX and always use OpenGL
Oh… well he’s wrong…
Tech 5 engine doesn’t support DirectX 11. It’s engine written in OpenGL.
“Id Tech 5 is a proprietary game engine released by id Software. It follows its predecessors, id Tech 1, 2, 3 and 4, all of which have subsequently been published under the GNU General Public License. It was seen as a major advancement over id Tech 4. The engine was first demonstrated at the WWDC 2007 by John D. Carmack on an eight-core computer; however, the demo used only a single core with single-threaded OpenGL implementation running on a 512 MB 7000 class Quadro video card.[1] id Tech 5 was first used in the video game Rage, followed by Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Evil Within and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood”
That shut him up, He kept obsessing about ID Tech 5, when this is the Void engine, adapted from ID Tech 5, to work the DX11 API.
Not the same engine, at all.
I think this might be my fault, I stressed to him that “just because” Microsoft used a slightly modified version of Unreal 4 on Gears 4, doesn’t mean they’re not still the same engine, at their core, & legally.
Funny though, we’re talking about the guy who repeatedly shouts about how Microsoft implemented DX12 into Unreal 4 – an engine that supports both Direct3D & OpenGL/Vulkan, who now suddenly believes id Tech 5 is incapable of having Direct3D support applied to it, for whatever delusional reason he came up with this time around >.>
Shame, it’s a good game made by good people, riddled with bethesda which is the problem in most cases. it was a year 1 buy for me, went from 1 year from release to never specially with that s**t DRM.
Denuvo?
Confirmed?
Dammit.
Yup, thankfuly they say it in the store page these days and making my (our ? some? )choice a lot easier.
Oh? Oh, excellent, at last ^^
on pc you need a DRM because pc gamer are pirates!!!!
Yeah, and your mommy is their parrot.
k3k
LOL… Say that to PSP gamers! If consoles were not closed systems, console customers would literally pirate their platform to death. If downloading/using pirated versions was as easy as on PC, the sales would simply be non existent.
the piracy is the cause of this:bad ports and no exclusive aaa ,look console sales and look pc sales LOL !
look the psp is a fail for piracy!
ps4 is a success because dont have piracy!
And… it’s not because PS4 customers are any better or aren’t pirates, it ‘s just that the system being closed they can’t use pirated games as easily. Make it a one step process and you will see the PS4 fail completely.
PSP failed in a huge part because of piracy. Even after so many years, piracy didn’t kill the PC or made it an unprofitable platform. Publishers left the PSP market because piracy was so big they didn’t make their investments back.
Let’s be honest here, if console gamers could pirate their games no console would still be alive. Hell, console gamers already hurt this industry bad with their used games sales which are almost non existent on the PC anymore.
Consoles have piracy, you idiot, just like they do cheaters.
People just don’t talk about them because it pisses off Microsoft & Sony when they do.
no with ps4 and xbox one you can’t pirate game!
Says who? Gaming Media? Microsoft? Sony?
Yeah, such trustworthy sources. They’re definitely completely trustworthy in this regard.
Idiot.
if you download a game on torrent you cant start from ps4 or xbox one ,you need to edit the firmware is hard, with a pc you need only a stupid crack to
replace on .exe LOL
“no with ps4 and xbox one you can’t pirate game!”
“you need to edit the firmware is hard”
So…. its possible.
P.S. Firmware edits are ridiculously easy these days, there’s guides to that sh*t all over the Internet. It’s 2016, not 2006, kiddo.
You do realise that your entire platform is one giant DRM, right?
Moron.
This.
obviously the perfomance with TXAA is horrible even in low. obviously since the maps are larger and more complex than the last one.
HEY WAIKOR do you know how much TXAA do the console versions have? ZERO.
lol i pay only 400$ you pay 1200$ for the same performance LOL IDIOT!
Must suck to be you. My GPU runs at 14 Teraflops… Pascal Titan X with an OC. And I had NO problem paying for it…. I’m no idiot, just someone who loves gaming in it’s highest form. I supposed you would call someone who buys a Ferrari an idiot too… Because hey… You can buy a nice reliable car for like $10000! The only person here that is an idiot is you.
WOW! Does titan x pscal overclcoks realy that muchs?+3 tflops just from oc? What cpu and ram do you have and monitor? You run all games maxed 4k 60 fps right?
buy 1200$ PC today is like to buy a ferrari but you can run only 50 km/h LOL
“same performance”
lmoa
GimpWorks strikes again…
Temporal AA is not a Gameworks technology.
Isn’t TXAA nvidia’s flavour of Temporal AA?
Wait, doing a bit of reading up on it now – there’s a lot of unclear info over whether this is a Gameworks implementation or not, you could be right. Although TXAA is employed in Gameworks’ suite of tech, it’s by no means a Gameworks-exclusive thing – I don’t think there’s really any difference between different implementations of the tech.
I can’t see any evidence of DH2 using Gameworks, but it may just be that they chose not to brand it as such to avoid some early backlash :/
TAA is not. but TXAA is nvidia exclusive. anyway the user mentioned TXAA being use even on low preset. i wonder id that’s mean TXAA being forced with no option to turn it off. because if the preset enable them you can should still be able to manually disable them.
and i don’t think the performance issue really caused by TXAA alone. if TXAA is the main culprit then we should faster performance on AMD hardware because TXAA will not run on AMD hardware. but so far i see even worse performance for AMD. so TXAA can’t be the issue bogging the game performance in general.
Temporal AA is the absolute worst. It makes everything run like garbage, it looks terrible, and causes horrendous artifacting on almost every game I’ve seen it employed in. It absolutely ruins image quality and coherency. Why are devs so obsessed with it?
This is why I’m getting agitated with devs who thinks it;s a really cool idea to shove us with a really weak AA option (FXAA) or toss us a super demanding one that hardly gets the job done (TXAA).
I want at least 5 AA options in most AAA games, we’re nearing 2017 ffs and we still get games with two, sometimes even one AA setting.
I agree that FXAA is mediocre. I really wish that recent AAA games would feature better examples of SMAA implementation, but unfortunately games such as Dark Souls 3 & Rise of the Tomb Raider bungle it, and games like Witcher 3 leave a lot to be desired.
Ultimately, the best anti-aliasing solution is raising the in-game resolution, increasing in-game resolution scale (if possible) or downsampling through your graphics card. Real-time AA solutions like MSAA & MLAA aren’t possible anymore with most recent big-budget games because they use deferred rendering.
Yeah, I’ve found in some cases that downsampling has worked better than the cheaper options. I went DSR with Dragon’s Dogma for example at 1440p (1080p BenQ) and it worked way better than the crappy FXAA option.
What about SMAA btw?, I mean that seems like the only other option left, well besides TAA, but that introduces blurring and has to be offset by another option like SweetFX to introduce sharpening to cancel out the blur.
now it is clear pc gaming is dead LOL!
good luck with bad port
time to switch console definitively
Go ahead, we won’t miss you. 🙂
Why people will never learn, just ignore him, that’s how kids think. Ignore him and eventually he’ll stop, as nobody is giving weight to his words anymore
Mods could just “block” him from the site and it would all do us a favor. besides he’s not breaking a rule that was listed to me the other day anyway, but I can’t see him getting moderated because “free speech”.
No free speech here, site owners decide, what you can and can’t say.
Regardless of what your countries laws allow, in public spaces.
In private property, (any privately owned web site), the owners rules take precedence.
They are not removing your rights, in public, as you are not in a publicly owned space, which is the only place those “free speech” rights actually apply.
The owners claim they allow for “opinions” to be said, yet they filter out swears and other such messages, but follow a book of rules to a point where it’s only when someone slags you off in your face.
Swearing, isn’t an opinion, so that’s not a contradiction.
I didn’t comment on this sites rules, just said, those rules, don’t have to allow any free speech, site owners decide on their site.
They can be inconsistant, and arbitrary, if they choose, or they can apply their rules rigidly, your only recourse, if you disagree, with any decision, is to leave the site.
I was saying that the site owners allow him to talk about anything, unless he’s directly insulting others, which was said to allow him under “free speech”.
This whole explanation of what is and isn’t or going and leaving isn’t doing anything other than being obvious, just so you know.
In fact i blocked him. Tired by reading his bullish*** every time.
Blocking trolls is so easy to do. I don’t see what any of these donks say.
the game actually use DX11 instead of OGL. this is modified engine. not pure Id Tech engine anymore.
well, i pre-ordered because i love this game to my death, it’s the first game i pre-ordered since battlefield 3
wow, for a moment i thought it was in 4k, but no, GTX 1080 at 1080p.
Exactly. People in general know nothing about game development. And then they comments like this.
This is why I hate AAA gaming, it;s either FXAA or a stupidly demanding AA that still doesn’t do that good of a job and yet tanks your frames. Would it kill for devs to come up with a form of AA that does better than FXAA (by a lot) and doesn’t cripple any system?.
Dishonored 2 Is Having A Lot Of Trouble On AMD Cards Not Nvidia, see this link:
THE GTX 1060 6GB 57/60FPS is an excelent performance
Yeah, these past few years were terrible, specially in port and game designs quality. but they sure do hell of a job for making sure all these ridiculous pre-order nonsense and microtransactions and drms to work perfectly on day 1.
AAA gaming and their AAA audience whom close their eyes and just defend whatever they throw at them.
“2016 and a very high end GPU cannot brute force a [middle-of-the-pack-looking] game”
Fixed it for you. Also;
“years ago we were able to brute force out way, now we suddenly can’t for some f’ed reason.”
The PC-console gap isn’t quite as big as it was a few years ago (just yet), so the degree of “available brute force” has been considerably reduced, even though it hasn’t been eliminated entirely, needless to say.
Also, lazier & lazier developers, needless to say.
I’d say it’s been reduced thanks to this gen coming out rather week (to a point where they are making a refresh and their userbase thinks it’s a cool idea, despite the fact that consoles haven’t needed to pull this tactic before in such force) and thus the devs are now scaling for consoles first (despite them not coming out great either way) than PC, whatever is max on consoles, is what we get, along with a few shiny settings, but nothing in such a way that makes the PC and console versions completely night and day.
The refresh isn’t something they wanted to do as much as they were forced to do, though, as a result of 4K. If they had a choice, I guarantee you they’d still be limping us along with the PS4 & XONE at sub-1080p resolution, & sub-30 FPS for the next few years, even as they’re still trying to do now, regardless of the “refresh” systems coming in soon.
Funny enough, Microsoft would have actually most likely been “forced” to refresh their Xbox in turn shortly after the X360’s launch had they not listened to Epic Games & doubled its RAM, since that was the only thing that allowed the X360 to do HD graphics.
Yeah, true story; originally the X360’s specs were so weak, it wouldn’t have been able to hold half a candle to the PS3, which would have most likely in turn put it square out of the running in terms of multi-platform development until Microsoft released an updated version.
They still haven’t let go of whining about the billion dollars that decision cost them, but they also refuse to recognise how that single moved saved the entire Xbox Platform from irrelevance, either >.>
Other than that, funny part is; unlike how in the previous generation they were just developing for the consoles, & then giving the PC a decompressed texture pack (since High-Res Texture Packs were the exception, not the rule), these days they’re actually downgrading the PC version so that it won’t outshine the console version too badly, seeing as they’re using extremely high resolutions for textures these days, which would allow for some serious PC outshining if only Microsoft & Sony weren’t bribing them to keep those extra resolutions under wraps.
Funny how that works, isn’t it? They wouldn’t even need to spend extra money to make the PC version look better, they’d just have to stop wh*ring themselves out to the console manufacturers.
“these days they’re actually downgrading the PC version so that it won’t outshine the console version too badly,”
Yeah, that’s exactly why I find all these side by side vids to be utter trite, because now 95% of the time, there is hardly any difference outside of very slight texture differences, shadows and draw distance.
I liked it last gen when PC got given high res texture packs, those at least made the differences night and day. Devs that think it’s good to gimp PC and PC gamers for the whole gen are in for a downfall if they believe PC will come back to them when they finally decide to knock it off, just look at CoD, BF and Titanfall sales on PC (Blaming EA and Origin for two and Acti for their usual crap).
Console gamers are very easy and quick to forgive, but on PC it’ll take years to get any of that trust back, more so that EA is still having to work hard for it. I give them another 5 more years until they’ve earned maybe a decent chunk back, but I won’t count on it.
Funny thing about them trying to gimp the console versions is that, those devs on PC that actually do a good job for us by the book, means we are far more likely to flock and give our money to them than we are for those that actively gimp us, thus forcing the asshat devs to work for their meal and eventually learn to play fetch (learn how to actually do their job and adhere to the market). We can lose some in the short game, but in the long run we’ll only benefit from it.
I yearn for the day though when consoles finally come to a close. For years I thought nothing much of them, but after years of transitioning fully to PC and learning the industry and deals that went down over the years, consoles really have hampered general game design for years, to a fine point where they only manage to make a few shiny games, but exclusively on a set piece of hardware for their own short term gain. On PC you can get plenty, and all without gimping the game or locking it to a small potato box to sell.
Hundreds.
It takes hundreds to get a game of this size done.
Man, don’t you know who you’re arguing against?
This here is Taylor Stoll, a 40-year PC Gaming Veteran who knows FAR better than 90% of all us other plebeians upon this here site……
;D
Oh i thought that PB guy was a 40yo virgin who can run anything max settings (even straight up broken games) just fine, i was wrong then 😀
You were indeed!
;D
