Microsoft has announced the release of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition on the PC, exclusively via the Windows Store. Age of Empires Definitive Edition features full remastered visuals with 4K support, new zoom levels, new and improved gameplay, as well as a fully remastered soundtrack.

For Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Microsoft has rebuilt assets for a modern 4K presentation, offers players the ability to play online with Xbox LIVE (in addition to LAN play), added campaign narration for every mission and enhanced the campaign and scenario editor, which allows anyone to make original custom campaigns for the game, by letting players easily share them with other players around the world.

  1. “exclusively via the Windows Store”
    “play online with Xbox LIVE”

Just what PC gamers were all hoping for! ?

    1. This is UWP… lets hope MS release AoE on Xbox

All I want is Age of Empire 4 on Xbox consoles. Game should be designed to work on both PC and Xbox like for example “Halo Wars 2”. Game should support both mouse and gamepads to give players choice of platform.

      1. and be gimped for PC players?. Yeah, no thanks.

halo Wars already killed the original studio behind AoE. Last thing I want to see is another console endeavour that kills a PC franchise again.

        1. Gimped? No… Simply designed for both gamepad and mouse from start like Halo Wars 2. AoW4 should be available on both platform to give players choice

MS can use engine from Halo Wars 2 to create AoE4. Win for everybody. More gamers = more money for developers = better game

          1. which means gimping the game for the console UI.

I’ve seen how HW1/2 were designed, I’m not stupid.

We already have a choice. You buy a console for console games, and a PC for PC games. Simple as.

    1. Just saw that and i was going to get it not now, seriously i’m a massive fan of this game for many reasons including pure nostalgia.

Now i wait until i see that go to 4.0 or higher or if i even hear one rumor about it coming to a real platform like steam.

    1. I prefer to keep my games in one place (steam library), but I see no reason to ignore playing games because they are windows 10 exclusives. Anyone who is using windows 10 can buy windows store games the same way like steam games, the only real downside is lack of mod support (and of course lack of pirate copies). More and more great games are available on windows 10, so gamers are forced to use windows 10 store anyway if they want to play new games.

  2. From eurogamer review:

“”Beyond the changes to visuals and audio, the game is pretty much identical to before””

Basically, game looks great now, but it still plays like old age of empires 1. Because of that I think game will be amazing, this is exactly what I wanted. I prefer when remasters improve graphics but gameplay should be the same.

    1. Didn’t they toss in other features, like being able to check on idle villagers, new animation turning points for all units etc?.
