3D Realms’ next upcoming game could be set in an original fantasy IP, to be revealed soon

It appears that 3D Realms, Duke Nukem developers are working on a new game, according to their latest Tweet. Though, we are not sure whether this new IP will be an FPS-RPG hybrid, or it will only be a fantasy-based RPG, with spells.

As 3D Realms tweeted, “Our next original IP will be revealed very soon… Get excited! 3D Realms’ latest published game was Ion Fury, which was based on the original Duke Nukem’s BUILD Engine. And now the team is focusing on a new all-original IP, which appears to be like a fantasy-based experience, at least judging from the picture posted on their Twitter account.

Or, alternatively this could be a brand new Game, having some of the original first-person shooter gameplay mechanics/elements. A ‘Fantasy’ theme sounds a bit odd for a studio which focuses on first-person shooters, at least in my opinion. But I hope the developers give us some hint about their next IP in the upcoming months.

Apart from this new IP, 3D Realms is also working on WRATH: Aeon of Ruin, which is an FPS built in the original Quake engine, and is currently in early access on STEAM, due to release in 2021. Other published games include Ghostrunner and Kingpin Reloaded. Here is hoping that the developers don’t totally ditch the original first-person shooter gameplay mechanics.

Stay tuned for more!

    1. I think the issue is how poorly they’re done, just a barebones no depth afterthough with an XP bar.
Just a shitty grind to add a sense of progression and not much else.

    2. It’s a must have feature. You must level up in every game. We need this cause our games are souless and we need people to ‘believe’ it has substance. So please, give us a break.. look the other way as we RPG you to death. P.S your friendly neighborhood developer. ?

      1. I have a bad feeling about this. What if these game developers chose to make a Battle Royale/BR game ? I’m doomed ! Chances are there for the devs to Jump on the ‘BR” bandwagon and hype, given the current trend in the gaming industry !

But since these are Duke Nukem developers, so I hope the team doesn’t deviate from the old-school FPS style.

I don’t see it happening, I mean, thousands bought a game in 2020 made in a Build engine Sourceport.

They might have caved to ReseEra like f*king r*ards, but they know what their niche is.
I think they would rather be successful at something relatively obscure and keep slowly growing than have 5 minutes of fame and become a drop in an ocean of sh*t.

People will keep going back to the same staples of the genre if you don’t actually do something new.

        2. yoUR CONCERNS ARE most viable. The problem is, in just about every industry, Music, Movies & Many other art forms. It’s been stagnant for a while and by this time it’s just about making the money. Therefor it’s all about what’s popular. The gaming industry has become very similar to the pop music industry. The sam 3 chords over and over, No bridge, intro or outro. So there is a heavy chance that they will make a battle royale. Every month there is a new battle royale on the market. So much that people think games aren’t getting released because of this plandemic, Oh they are still releasing games like CRAZy, they are ALL mostly BATTLE royales.

      2. the problem isnt that they have rpg mechanics, the problem is that they are grindfest looter shooter mechanics that dont make you feel like you get more powerful, unlike say system shock 2 and deus ex that upgrading is intoxicating.

    3. I think the issue is how poorly they’re done, just a barebones no depth afterthough with an XP bar.

      1. Yes in a game i don’t want progression, i want adventure. I don’t know why people confuse the 2.

        1. Thing is, you can have both without the progression system actively impairing the adventure negatively.
Christ there are even games that make you decide if you want to participate in the progression system depending if you want the game to be harder or easier.
Look at something like Resident Evil 4 or Dark Messiah

The issue isn’t genres or mechanics, the issue is bad, or many times, rushed developers and bad game design that relies on checklists pandering to people with addictive personalities and instantaneous gratification for small dopamine rushes with no actual emotional payoff, it’s also why many AAA games are not even memorable.

There’s a reason why they are pushed so hard and why Microtransactions are, most of the times, tied to these progression systems.

    4. Ion Fury and Wrath both lack RPG elements. 3D Realms seems to have refocused on delivering solid games that their core fanbase wants, so hopefully there’s no trend chasing shenanigans going on here.

  1. cmmon finish WRATH Aeon Of Ruins, it’s taking ages
for the love of good; not every game out there have to be an rpg, full of looting, leveling, and all that generic garbage every goddaaamm rpg is following
