The time has finally come and so have I. Modder ‘onnoj’ has released Echelon Renderer for Deus Ex, which adds support for RTX Remix Path Tracing. Yes, you can now enjoy the classic first-person immersive sim PC game with Path Tracing. And it looks glorious.
Going into more details, the Echelon Renderer is a fixed-function rendering pipeline intended for use in with NVidia’s RTX Remix. The renderer uses the ‘real’ lights from the map data and passes them on to RTX Remix. Moreover, the level geometry is stable, meaning that from RTX Remix’s perspective, walking around the world doesn’t cause the geometry to change. According to the modder, this greatly reduces flickering.
Check out the screenshots from the RTX Remix mod for Deus Ex at the end of the article. Both the modder and NVIDIA’s Jacob Freeman shared these pics, and they look incredible. This is what you’d expect from an official remaster. This mod really shows off what RTX Remix can do for older games.
Those interested can go ahead and download the mod from this link. Be also sure to read its installation instructions.
These past few months we’ve been covering a lot of RTX Remix Mods. In January 2023, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Last month, we also shared videos for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas RTX Remix, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Unreal, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and Midnight Club 2. Earlier this month, we also shared the first screenshots from the RTX Remix Mod for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. And yesterday, we shared a WIP video for Fallout: New Vegas with RTX.
Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders have released early demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Tomb Raider, Max Payne and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. On the other hand, the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne looks amazing (at least in my opinion). Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for the first and the second NFS: Underground games. Oh, and don’t forget to give a go at this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Finally, you can download Path Tracing Mods for Doom 2, Quake, Half-Life and Serious Sam.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

This game badly needs environment overhaul
The Revision mod does that to some extent.
But yeah, it needs a complete remake at this point.
And that is why I keep saying that RTX in old games is pointless and make things worse. These games were not designed with such lighting in mind.
never use revision, its enviroment overhaul might be good but the rest sucks, always use gmdx.
Old games with RTX make me think of text which has been generated by ChatGPT: You can tell it’s RTX because it looks out of place and unnatural.
It’s a matter of preference. I think it looks great and better than the other RTX showcases I’ve seen before. The reason why they seem out of place is because people are still trying to get the hang of it or some are just too lazy or wanna rush it out of the door to be the first to show it off. I think in due time there’ll be people who will come along and show how it’s meant to be done.
Besides, there are modern games that combine those sort of retro/basic visuals with modern lighting like Valheim. While the game does look “better” with the HD texture mods, it does ultimately take away the very essence of what made it look unique in the first place in my opinion. Not everything needs to be photorealistic.
Neat, maybe this could even work decently on the Steam Deck, since its RTRT performance is about to get a good boost soon-ish.
(RTX Remix games can also work on AMD & Intel GPUs, because NVIDIA uses a forked version of DXVK internally, meaning the RTX treated games are just using the standard Vulkan extensions for ray-tracing.)
These RTX Remix mods seem wasted on the lighting. When Nvidia first announced RTX Remix, I was more excited about the potential for modders to take advantage of the ability to change textures and lighting in real time. I am curious however why most RTX mods are Path Tracing. I would have thought regular raytracing, while still intensive, would be more performance friendly and an option to change the game’s lighting.
Seems like a lot of modders just stuck in Path Tracing and didn’t even bother to take full advantage of the whole suite. This really should be more revolutionary than simple lighting changes. The biggest hurdle I would think to most modders has been having to open and close a game whenever you make any changes before you can actually see what’s changed and how it looks. Maybe they are using it now and we just don’t know whenever a new texture pack is released. But those don’t make the news because the lighting was untouched.
that’s because most mods are still busy trying to get raytracing working(culling seems to be the biggest hurdle), in the case of vampire the masquerade there are already SOME meshes and textures replaced for instance
RTX Remix is Path Tracing only and always was. Path Tracing is the only way to have a unified injectable kind of RT in the way that Remix works by hijacking and converting the game’s renderer.
Remix allows for asset changes, but that takes much more time.
I would love a remake of this
psychotoxic and operation matriachy both had these glowing shinny oily surfaces as if you are playing on source engine and have set to “Reflect all” if this is what rtx has to offer, then i dont care. That shinny everything effect was cool in 2005.
This game needs a proper remake like System Shock
duke nukem 3d rtx could be interesting
nvidia shoving rtx up their a*s could be interesting.
