Sea of Thieves has the best water effects in a video-game

Microsoft and Rare have launched the closed beta phase for Sea of Thieves and from what we’ve experienced so far, it appears that this game features the best water effects in a video-game. While the game features cartoon-ish visuals, its water effects are better than the ones featured in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag or Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Sea of Thieves is a pirate-themed action-adventure cooperative multiplayer game played from a first-person perspective. The game features cross-platform play between Windows-based personal computers and Xbox One video game consoles. A group of players travel and explore an open world via a pirate ship and assume different roles such as steering, hoisting sails, navigation, firing cannons and other tasks. Players can embark on quests, collect loot and engage in combat with other players.

Below you can find some GIFs that a number of Resetera’s members shared.

Microsoft has provided us with a closed beta key, so stay tuned for our First Impressions article (that will most probably go live tomorrow).

      1. All games released (or planned) by MS studios are UWP. All of them will be free on launch day as part of GamePass (10 usd/month)

        – Sea of Thieves
        – all Forza games
        – all Gears games
        – State of Decay 2
        – Ori and the will of Wisps
        – Age of Empire 4
        – Crackdown 3

          1. Plus the monthly subscription fees for Xbox Live Gold so to play those ‘free’ aka $10/month games online. D’oh!

          2. He copy pasted something completely irrelevant to answer your question.

They aren’t free and were never planned to be free and only the dumbest moron that ever moroned would think so. What he Ctrl V is from an article about Game Pass. All future 1st party titles will be available on Game Pass on launch day. Game Pass sub is $10 a month.

        1. i am using game pass 14 day trial. Try to download gears 4 for last 5 days. it starts then says “error”.

lol forza 7 demo does nothing when it tells me to press start.

Hope for a steam version of SOT.

    1. Open world games will not get graphics like this any time soon. Bethesda’s Gamebryo 20.6 Frankengine would be lucky to catch up to where UE4 was years ago within this console gen, but surely won’t. Maybe the next TES will at least look contemporary, unlike FO4.

      1. Haha another moron with no clue what they’re talking bout, no technical experience. FO4 looked perfectly fine. Animations, nope.

        1. FO4 looks terrible relative to how badly it runs. It looks servicable if you completely discard performance, but in context it looks bad.

        1. Yeah, an open world game where the world consists of nothing but waves and some tiny islands. If waves are all you’re rendering then you can afford to spend some performance on them. If you’re rendering an actual world, meaning terrain with plants, buildings, tons of different models and textures all the way to the horizon then you have no resources left for good 3D waves like SoT. Look at GTA 5 and BF4 and extrapolate from there. You can expect waves better than GTA 5’s in coming open world titles but not by much. Not SoT level. You’ll be disappointed if you hope for this.

  1. Thank Joseph Fourier. He paved the way for complex water simulations like this all the way back 1882. And thank FFT for allowing us to get this at playable frame rates.

  2. Realistic sea and cartoonish characters give off that Pixar vibe. Also, it’s nice to have such eye-catching water in a game where we’ll have to see it all the time.

  3. Nope, that would be Ubisoft’s upcoming Skull and Bones. Sea of Thieves is a cartoony style, multiplatform, Unreal 4 game engine title. Nothing really special happening here. Its the standard ocean physics capabilities of Unreal 4 in a game that is over 90% ocean, that’s about it.

    1. Clearly you’re blind and also stupid. If you’ve even seen Skull and Bones, Sea of Thieves is miles ahead of it in graphics.

    2. It never said physics, it said effects. Visually it looks amazing. The physics are probably non-existent, but it looks pretty.

  4. Learn to use a computer otherwise stop wasting everyone’s time. W10 is perfectly fine, has been for years, and that’s corroborated by thousands of expert sources. Your trash internet is trash. Move to a developed country and your internet will be fine.

    1. “Move to a developed country and your internet will be fine.”
I haven’t tried this fix yet, but since win7 or win 8.1 handle my poor internet better than win10, i’ll stick with those.

” W10 is perfectly fine, has been for years, and that’s corroborated by thousands of expert sources.”
This is a logical fallacy called appeal to authority. What if these thousands of expert sources (or expert shills for that matter) are wrong? Just throw more money at the PC and it should be fine, that’s what the experts are doing nowadays

  5. There is 34.400.000 results if you google “win 10 slow internet” you know, and why should i figure it out if Win 7 and 8.1 works just fine without any finetuning (and i did a lot of finetuning trying to fix that POS)? Maybe the problem is already fixed so i will try again in 2 or 3 years down the road

  6. Just for curiosity sake i googled win 7 and 8.1 slow internet and received 3 million and less than a million hits, respectively, so tell me again why Win 10 with his 35 million results is such a superior OS (microsoft ransomware games and DX12 doesn’t count, sorry)
