Last month, Ubisoft released Assassin’s Creed: Shadows on PC and current-gen consoles. And, after Mirage (which had a proper storyline), I was expecting something similar from it. Sadly, after spending 60 hours in the game and completing it, I can say that its ending is one of the most underwhelming endings I’ve seen in the history of video games.
In AC: Shadows, you control two characters. Naoe and Yasuke. These two work together, and while the main story can be played with both of them, they have different “special/side” missions and endings.
Let’s start with Yasuke. In my opinion, Ubisoft did a great job here. In his final mission, we get to see what happened to Yasuke prior to the events of the game. We also get a proper conclusion to his arc. Yes, the devs hinted at something more (can’t comment without spoiling it), but the ending felt great. It offered a closure to what we’ve been experiencing in the game as Yasuke.
And then we have Naoe’s ending. Basically, this isn’t an ending in any shape or form. This is just a bait for buying the game’s future DLC.
After spending over 50 hours on the game, you get a 10-minute exposition cut-scene with an optional boss fight. That boss fight is the result of a choice you make at the end of the game. Contrary to other games, though, it’s as pointless as it can get. Basically, the result is the same whether you fight or spare the enemy Naoe confronts at the end.
And things get even worse. I’ll try not to spoil anything, but here is what happens. Naoe kills all the main enemies, retrieves something, learns that a close person to her is alive, and begins her quest to find him/her. And that’s where the game ends. There is no conclusion to her arc. There is no ending. The only thing you get is a bait so that you can pay more for the game’s DLC (which will most likely continue Naoe’s story).
So, what’s the point of completing AC: Shadows if it doesn’t have an ending? To put it simple, there is no point at all. And that’s precisely where AC: Shadows falls apart.
Both Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin had interesting stories to tell with proper endings. They didn’t lock their endings behind future DLCs. They respected their fans. But this is Ubisoft we’re talking about. And, instead of offering their fans a conclusion, the devs spit on them and ask them for more money in case they want to see a proper ending. Thanks Ubisoft.
The point of this article is to warn you about this underwhelming ending. If you are playing it for its gameplay loop, then by all means, continue playing it. If, on the other hand, you’re trying to complete it so that you can see how the story ends, put your KB&M/controller down and uninstall it. There is no proper ending in this game. So, save your valuable time and watch the “ending” on YouTube!

Is a regression (from Valhalla, cannot think of a lower bar in the series) in every aspect besides visuals (mostly the environments, the characters are still visually the same since Origins and that's a decade old game) and stealth that tried to emulate Splinter Cell and failed.

I think the focus in combat and numbers goes up like baby's first RPG to kill slashspoonges hurt the series, when the priority should be designing enemies and leves towards stealth, and the stealth that is there is so basic and boring regardless of how many op tools they give you because the AI is down's syndrome levels of action.

All of this makes sense when you realize that ubisoft is a greedy woke company that drags out their games long enough with "content" to waste your time and justify the price of their games, eventually people realize that every last game in any of the series of ubisoft games was actually better than the newest one, so ubisoft competes with their own past. You clearly never played Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja, you beat the game and all you get is a text message on the screen from the president saying "thanks, let's go gets Burger"
I said it was underwhelming too, but after mulling it over for a few days I think the problem is that they should have rolled credits before that final kofun investigation. Then it would have been clear that the story was over. But because credits hadn't rolled I thought there was another set of objectives incoming, instead we got the credits, and it was jarring.

Doing a bit of research shows the only announced DLC is a FREE 10 hour expansion. If Naoe's ending is included in this then at least the player isn't being nickle and dimed and this article becomes a non issue. I thought it was worth adding for context.
