BioWare’s new IP, Anthem, looks phenomenal in its first gameplay trailer

Electronic Arts and BioWare have revealed the first gameplay trailer for their new shared-world action-RPG, Anthem. In Anthem, players can team up with friends as Freelancers—the bold few with the courage to leave civilization behind and explore a landscape of primeval beauty.

Players will be able to wield an arsenal of Javelin exosuits, each equipped with unique weapons and abilities.

Players can band together with friends, confront the dangers you find, and grow in power with every step.

From the looks of it, this seems like a mix of Mass Effect and Destiny.

Anthem will be powered by the Frostbite 3 Engine and according to the companies, this trailer features in-game footage that was captured in real-time. And it looks bloody phenomenal. However, this is BioWare we’re talking about and since Mass Effect: Andromeda was downgraded, we are a bit cautious about the visuals that will be featured in the final version.

But anyway, enjoy the gameplay trailer!

  1. So;

    – 3rd Person Shooter: check.
    – Single planet: check.
    – Massive environment/s with exploraty focus: check.
    – Pretty as hell, if nothing else: check.
    – Real Open World? TBD.

    – Gameplay: Co-Op. Huh. Was not expecting Co-Op. So, basically instead of Dragon Age meets Mass Effect, we’ve got Mass Effect meets The Division, on a far grander scale? Hm.

    – Considering the website calls it a “shared-world action-RPG”, I’m not sure you can play offline solo, making this another always-online “service”, courtesy of EA (separate offline characters in order to avert cheating?).

    – Can’t tell if there’ll be an actual “main storyline” to follow, or if you just wander about & trigger events &/or wait for events to trigger, so maybe no mystery storyline, just a survival storyline, of sorts?

    – Curious to see if they’ll follow The Division’s model & have a locked off PvP zone, or if this will be more like EVE Online, with everyone capable of shooting at you anywhere outside of the sanctuary zone that “The Wall” creates for you. Either way, hopefully they’ll be smart enough not to riddle this with exclusively RNG loot boxes, over-the-top amounts of microtransactions, & a ridiculous amount of f*cking cheaters (a complete lack of PvP would be just weird, in my opinion).

    – Hopefully the inevitable progressive unlock system won’t be too grindy, especially considering the inevitable inclusion of microtransactions.

    – Cross-Platform Play?

P.S. Wow, Praxley’s hair was weird. Yeah, I couldn’t stop thinking that the entire time he was talking to “you.”

      1. I love to stroke my ego by pointing out how often my predictions come true, even if not entirely true, in Anthem’s case ;D

But yeah, I really do ^^

      1. Could be. Then again, it is a Frostbite title, & they haven’t downgraded those once (yet)….. Just repeatedly launched them in extremely broken states.

        1. BF4 downgraded (physics), BF1 downgraded after some patches.
Did you changed your avatar back ? I don’t know you anymore.

          1. Hm. Good point. Though, to be fair, those were both DICE games, & those f*ckers went off the rails years ago, whereas Edmonton hasn’t done a single thing since Mass Effect 3 – not that it’s much of a consolation to look at it like that, of course, as ME3 wasn’t that good, either.

Yeap. Too many people complaining about muh cigar, so I’ll have to find something different to switch it out with 😛 Also, I missed my great big balls of fire, anyway ^^

        2. Ofcourse it’s going to be downgraded. You think it’s going to look like that on PS4 and XBOX ONE ? Not a chance. Unless they let PC players push visuals significantly further, the PC version won’t look like that either.

Besides, even if they did give PC gamers the options, it just means a bunch of complaining from people who can’t run it completely maxed out at 200fps 16k or the latest graphics card.

All that said, the Scorpio and PS4 Pro may mean that the PC will have options for much better visuals.

          1. “Besides, even if they did give PC gamers the options, it just means a bunch of complaining from people who can’t run it completely maxed out at 200fps 16k or the latest graphics card.”

            HAHAHAHAHA ^^

It’s a curious thing though, since if they downgrade, NOTHING will save them from the hatewave, so why even open with something like this? Especially now that their company is in such a precarious position.

But yeah, we’ll definitely have to keep an eye out for stealth-degrading between showcases, agreed.

          2. It’s almost as if it was devs/publishers’ responsibility to stop trying to fool us with fake gameplay or vertical slices…

          3. It is, though it is also a consumer’s responsibility to stop sycophantically salivating over every little reveal & thus inevitably, time after time, irregardless of how many times they’ve already been bent over & f*cked, fall for the same old bullsh*t instead calling the f*ckers out on their sh*t.

    1. It doesn’t sound like something new, almost at all, i mean especially it’s being developed by bioware.

Also, back to old avatar huh? 😀

      1. Yeah, that’s true. Unless there’s something major we just don’t know about yet, this seems a little….. clone-y?

And a little barebones if there won’t be an actual storyline to play through, just random events.

Yup. Too many whiney little b*tches on here complaining about my cigar 🙁 ;P

        1. Yeah seems just like a Bioware destiny clone. IDK, I wasn’t really impressed by any of the gameplay shown. Hopefully there’s a lot more rpg elements we haven’t seen yet.

    2. you for got braindead skilless combat with auto locking abilities.

game looks pretty, but a pretty turd.

    3. “Will it be single-player friendly?”

Yes of course! The game is designed so you can enjoy an amazing BioWare story and explore an incredible open world alone or with friends.

        1. they say that about everything. They were playing a female character, that’s why Bub&Bob is saying that

          *rolls eyes*

          1. “They” evidently do not. Thanks for telling folk for why I posted my comment though. Your mind-reading abilities need some attention.

      1. ….. Note the question marks before posting, first, next time?

        No? Yeah, okay.

Unless you’re referring to my thoughts &/or assumptions, which I’m pretty sure I phrased as such, rather than stating them as facts.

  2. Hey this a nice setting.
and ofcourse the main character is female why wouldnt be?
WAIT this is a division/destiniy clone?
Shoulder aiming, nope, nope nope, i want to be a mech strafing around with boosters.
Too damn scripted, propably faked and will be downgraded.

God damn it game inudstry, hello, this is dog, i want to order a mountain of salt….yes i said a MOUNTAIN, yes SALT, thank you….when will my order arrive? Ok thanks.

Ok, now ill start building a fortress out of this salt to shield myself from the typical dissapoitment that this game is gonna throw at me just like destiny and division.

Anyone who wants to join my salt castle, repeat after me I WILL NOT PREODER GAMES….good now remember WE DONT TRUST THE GAMING INDUSTRY, WE DONT BELIEVE WHAT WE SAW IS REAL UNTIL WE CAN PLAY IT, aka a month before release.(review copies)

    1. I think the character is interchangeable, they just opted to showcase the female for pandering purposes, & in order to make it explicitly clear that yes, you can play as females, if you wish.

Lol’d hard, btw, but yeah, agreed ^^

“aka a month before release. (review copies)”

More like actual word of mouth experiences, Twitch streaming, etc. F*ck sycophantic reviewers. I can already see them lining up to give this 9/10 upon launch, or maybe 8/10 if it’s buggy as hell.

      1. obviously i know you can create your own character, its a mmo, but i didnt know that when i was watching the video from fps perspective making it seem like a story focused game.

Youtubers get review copies too, even small ones.

        1. Oh, good 😛

Yeah, but YouTubers are almost as untrustworthy as websites, since when it comes time to list issues, they’re usually rather vague, or just outright neutral on them, in order to protect their relationships with publishers (read: free CD keys).

That, & the pendulum of doom that hangs over their heads in the form DMCA copyright claims, which rears its hideous head every once in a while. Not to mention when someone gets caught accepting a bribe from a publisher in exchange for positive coverage (see: WB & the Shadow of Mordor scandal, for example).

  3. Interesting. Will keep track of this one. Anybody knows what engine this is ?

  4. At the end of the demo it showed “pre-alpha footage”.Lol,brace for heavy downgrade guys. The downgrade will be real with this one.

      1. Yea but they haters are going to keep doing what they do best… Spreading their misery to all who will listen.

      2. Yes frostbite has one of the best looking games but let’s be real what was shown here clearly won’t look as good when it finally releases.
If I’m wrong about downgrade then buddy I will be the happiest one.

  5. If it were any other studio making this, I’d be interested. But Bioware hasn’t made a good game since ME2 in 2010. Too bad, as it did look pretty good from what they showed.

      1. ME3 had far more issues than the ending, it’s just that nobody talks about them because the ending overshadows them all THAT much.

        1. Please, pray tell what are these issues? Why is the gaming world so god damn cynical now? Why cant you just enjoy a F’ing game? If some of us are excited for a game that isn’t your queue to run in and try to sh*t on it ASAP. Don’t want to play it? then don’t. Just don’t try to ruin everyone else’s enthusiasm because your life is so bleak.

          1. You do realise that ME3 came out 5 years ago, right?

I mean, I’m starting to wonder if you just have bad reading comprehension, or if you’re purposefully trolling, right now.

          2. And who are you to tell him not to share his opinion? If you want nothing but blind praise for something you’re excited for, either avoid the comments section or ignore the ones you don’t like.

Personally I think it looks OK, not really interested. I’m not going to get my hopes up because it’s EA/Bioware and the trailer didn’t quite blow me away.

I will say the graphics are pretty nice and I like how they don’t seem to be holding you back. Way too many games limit you. Here it seems like they want you to feel like you can massacre everything. For example the lock on missiles towards the end would’ve been limited to less enemies at a time in other games. Also the mortar was just devastating.

        2. It’s okay. I still thoroughly enjoyed the 3rd game. It was still a great game until those last ten minutes. If only they abruptly ended the game 10 minutes early lol.

  6. This gameplay save Microsoft conference!
It’s looks f..king amazing ? Can’t wait to play it.

    1. The gameplay looked like garbage because of the off center positioning of the main character and because of the fake “comm chatter”.

In other words, it looked like every other shallow 3rd person shooter with no campaign.

      1. Game have campaign you can go to completely game in solo….

This game is like GWR,You can play it at Co-op or play it in solo!

    2. Saved it? The whole f*cking thing was great game after great game, and if you’re into the consoles, you got a beast of a machine (for a console) to boot. Don’t know what you were watching.

      1. “The whole f*cking thing was great”

“Don’t know what you were watching.” Sounds about right….. 90% of what we saw was boring as hell & the other 10% was semi-interesting, at best.

      2. Yes Microsoft show great game! But no AAA games!for those game that
Microsoft show it,I never go to buy Xbox one X!

  7. Guys before screaming about SJW’s this is where the experienced members of Bioware went to since before ME:Andromeda. I think it’s going to be quite different. If you read that interview Kotaku did on why ME: Andromeda sucked, most of the talent was working on Anthem which left amateurs to work on Andromeda.

      1. Every other game is this social dependence co-op/multiplayer garbage. I feel sorry for people who are miserable when they’re alone. Do you people have to hold hands with a friend when you take a piss? Christ.

        1. I was talking to the other idiot who implied that playing single-player=miserable and alone.

Do you think before you type?!

          1. Way too many games nowadays rely on social co-op multiplayer crap to give the illusion of actual gameplay. It’s what lazy devs do instead of actually creating immersive, engaging worlds. Instead they just create a small playground, throw some guns in there and tell gamers “Create your own fun.” Lazy.

          2. Tbh I feel we just have to accept that’s what some devs wanna do. At the end of the day, it’s Bioware’s decision. People always associate a company with a certain formula which is honestly okay but the unfortunate reality is companies never truly remain the same.

Bioware will simply NOT be like how they orignally were. Companies remain the same in name only. New employees come, new ideas are created. And the truth is, even though it sucks, Bioware can do whatever they want.

This doesn’t mean that we can’t get great RPGs though. There are many other devs who make great RPGs. All I’m saying is, at the end of the day, it’s ultimately pointless to complain about something that will never change.

      2. When you play with friends everything is fun. When you play one of those games you dont pay any attention to the lore, the graphics, the enviroment, you just put yourself in a autopilot mode and go around pew pewing and gaining levels.

          1. “you just put yourself in a autopilot mode and go around pew pewing and gaining levels.”

This is “you” going around in autopilot mode pew-pewing the sh*t out of things, while thinking “All You Need is KILL!” ;P

      3. Co-op games are great to play with friends but I’m one of those people who highly values a single player experience.

    1. Is it only online mmo? Not single player action like mass effect androemsa? will it be online mmo only?

    1. It really did remind you of how they initially unveiled The Division, all those years back, didn’t it? Then year over year it slowly degraded itself into the mess that launched live, at which point……

      Hm.

  8. Because they’re owned by WB-DC, & DC hates Marvel’s guts for doing what they’re failing at so bad 😀

Honestly, I’d just settle for a proper Spawn movie right now, & then just let the rest come, afterwards.

  9. Very impressive environments and art direction. Gameplay feels liek the worst part of a Mass Effect game though…

  10. My God! Just read over the self-entitled posts here. This game looked AMAZING, no two ways about it, no matter what planet you’re on, it LOOKED superb. Now, if it turns out like that, who knows, maybe not, but until then, you CANNOT say this like sh!t.

Yet here we are. The usual crowd of whiners, picking it apart and claiming it’s average because it’s cool to be like that. It’s just too much for them to say “f*ck me, that looks good” because they think it ruins their street cred. News flash, you have no cred, you’re a gamer, the world already looks on you as a nerd, so embrace it, get excited when we’re shown something like this, because it deserves it. Reserve the hatred for if, or when it comes out and it’s ACTUALLY no good, and not just because you think you’re edgy. You’re not …

    1. Visually it was amazing.

Gameplay-wise, what they showcased basically amounted to The Division: Destiny.

If you don’t want to accept that, that’s fine, but that’s on you.

    2. who cares what it looked? Division looked amazing too and it played like a bullet spongy mob elimination repettive mmofest

“News flash, you have no cred, you’re a gamer, the world already looks on you as a nerd, so embrace it, get excited when we’re shown something like this, because it deserves it. Reserve the hatred for if, or when it comes out and it’s ACTUALLY no good, and not just because you think you’re edgy. You’re not …”

Unlike you we got something called experiance, we know it will be downgraded and this whole thing is scripted and faked..

  11. And judging by the movement animation systems used in frostbite, it can most certainly do faces. It clearly supports somewhat advanced animation systems.

    1. Oh my god dude. Clearly, the animation system can support detailed facial animations, the devs just have to make the animations first.
