Is Forza Horizon 3’s Surfers Paradise finally playable in 60fps? Yes, yes it is

A few hours ago, Turn 10 released a new performance PC patch for Forza Horizon 3. As you may have guessed, we immediately tested the Surfers Paradise area; an area that suffered from major optimization issues. And we are happy to report that the game can now run with a stable 60fps experience even in that area.

As we can see below, the game now maxed out all of our six CPU cores. It may took Turn 10 almost eight months to fix the game’s performance issues, however It’s pretty amazing witnessing Forza Horizon 3 using all of the available CPU cores/threads.

As a result of those CPU optimizations, our GTX980Ti was used at 98% during our test session.

Forza Horizon 3 now performs incredibly well on the PC platform, and we can now highly recommend this game to all racing fans.

Below you can find some screenshots, showcasing the game running with more than 60fps on Ultra settings (our minimum framerate was 64fps during our test session).

  1. Its amazing hey, massive props to the devs they really came through. Its like Gears Of War 4 performance now on Ultra which is crazy considering the state of the performance. Also I think this shows what the potential is with DX12, effort and good dev team.

  2. Just tried the new patch. It’s a huge improvement on my 3770K+GTX1080
Now it runs locked at my monitor’s refresh rate of 72Hz where before it was a stuttery mess.

Should’ve been like this at launch but hey I appreciate the devs still supporting their game.

    1. “I appreciate the devs still supporting their game”

Dev of this game is Playgrounds. They use engine ForzaTech created by Turn10. Turn10 is finishing new Forza Motorsport 7 for release with Project Scorpio. So probably Playgrounds migrate their Forza Horizon 3 to new version of ForzaTech engine from FM7.

Three week to E3 and first gameplay from Forza Motorsport 7.

      1. Believe me that Turn 10 had their hands in with fixing the CPU utilization issues. So unfortunately for you, you will have to give props to the evil, vile, Microsoft… oh nooooo!

    2. It runs amazingly well after this patch. I have had the game from before launch, ultimate edition.

Patches and drivers slowly improved the performance but near the tram stop area in Surfer’s Paradise no matter what system you had performance would tank. I have an OC 6700k, it doesn’t get much faster for gaming CPUs but utilization was low even as the game dropped frames.

Everywhere else I would get 80FPS+ constantly, but there it would often stutter and drop to as low as 50FPS. Luckily it was an isolated area and didn’t ruin a fabulous game..

Now in that area it runs 90FPS and never dips. Performance across the board has jumped…..I am quite sure you could run this and maintain 60FPS+ with a midrange CPU easily now.

    3. I have the exact same setup except 60hz monitor with 16 gb of the fastest ram available for the 3770k running at 1080p. I’m very sensitive to frame rate drops and had to run on dynamic high at 50 hz to avoid any (would still get to the 40’s around the tram in a very fast car). Didn’t expect much from this patch but boy was I surprised. No drops at ultra 1080p, 60hz. I may try dsr but I’m not picky on resolution. I got the game at launch but haven’t gotten very far since I want to stretch out this lovely experience. Glad I can do it now with a buttery smooth frame rate 🙂

  3. While this should have been there at launch, I can see why it took them so long. Getting your engine to utilize more CPU threads isn’t something you fix overnight. We should NOT have had to wait 8 months for the game to be in this state, but better late than never.

  4. Well hot damn! I’ve always played in 4k with no AA on a 3770k and 1080. Usually 60 fps except Surfers Paradise, now it’s pretty solid at 60. Might look into the DLC finally.

  5. John you should look into downloading Rivatuner Statistics Server. They recently added support for UWP games so now you can monitor your CPU, GPU, Memory etc usage via a overlay while in-game! It will let your see CPU and GPU usage more better than needing to run the game in windowed lol

Just a heads up for your future posts about UWP games.

    1. Wow! That excellent! Thanks for that info, I was hoping that eventually it would work in UWP.

  6. MS “Let’s actually optimize Forza Apex to bait and switch PC Gamer’s into buying Forza Horizon 3.”
MS “We can’t have our console looking bad so make Horizon single threaded. Then pay shills like Wichard at Digital Foundry advertising money and claim the game is optimized at launch. We will fix it only when the game is old and we are about to promote Forza 6 at E3. We will also hijack PC Gamer’s (as i they have any ethics) show at E3 like usual with used car salesman Phil Spencer. We have to bait and switch the suckers *cough* PC gamers into buying Forza 6 like Horizon’s, but Forza 6 will be REALLY broken because we have to make Scorpio look good.”

PC Gamer’s born yesterday. “Derp, Microsoft cares, derp. What was Games for Windows Live? What is SMAA or reshade? If it was good UWP would have it. Derp.”

    1. Apex was not optimized when it came out really. And Apex is a closed track / per track race game. Horizon is a open world style race game. But still no excuses for the late CPU optimization that’s for sure.

    2. Ya… That’s what they did… You know what? I think you need your tinfoil hat stretched. It seems to be cutting off the oxygen supply to your brain. Good god man. Do you actually believe your own BS? And I wasn’t born yesterday… I have been gaming since i was 4 years old (36 years ago). I would put my credentials up against yours any day….

    3. The sad thing about the xbox is that the only good game they had in the last four years is FH3 and that was made by Playground and their next game after forza 7 will be a multiplat since M$ is not interested in singleplayer games without microtransactions.

  7. “took Turn 10 almost eight months to fix the game’s performance issues”

A slow handclap for all concerned. Now bring it over to Steam for those of us who refuse to spend money of Microsoft’s Windows 10 Store.

    1. Errr the best racing game ever made has sold crap tons of copies on Xbox and windows 10 store. Really Slow hand clap for your mental illness causing you to miss the fact that normal folk buy it on one of those platforms and enjoy the hell out of it.

      1. First of, what does the XBOX have to do with this? In terms of sales on PC, we don’t get any numbers so that’s irrelevant. Even if we did know, the number of people playing it doesn’t determine the quality of a game. Keep in mind, not judging the quality as I haven’t played it myself, but the point still stands.

Also, calling it the best racing game ever made? That’s subjective. Again irrelevant to the argument at hand.

Right, now let me explain why the overwhelming majority doesn’t use the Microsoft store because you seem to miss the entire point why people don’t wanna buy it there.

First of, very few sales and not nearly as good as Steam.

Second, games are locked. No messing around, no mods, no nothing. Not saying it would be fixed, but if a game isn’t locked, it can at least be attempted to be fixed. Remember Dark Souls 1?

Third, downloading problems are constant and slower on the Microsoft Store.

Fourth, most of our games are on Steam and as a result, communities, workshops and more are all on Steam with Steam games. The Store barely offers anything outside the game and a review. If you do want to use the game hub well ….

That is much slower than anything on the market atm. Not to mention, it works through Windows 10 apps which are crappy, slimmed down version of other services that have been around much longer.

It’s also much more convenient. Why take away the ability to buy it from different services or sites?

But I think the biggest reason is, it is on the Microsoft Store. A store controlled by Microsoft. I like their operating system, I really enjoy Windows 10. But in terms of gaming? No thank you. They have shown time and time again that they have no idea why people love PC gaming. They simply don’t understand the market and until they take the PC market seriously, nobody is going to take them seriously.

        1. Pssst
Many are buying their games on windows 10 store.I am & it works just fine. You don’t want to so be it…they aren’t losing any sleep

          1. roger that..it’s come a long way…still has some improvements needed.

  8. 7 months later and the devs are still supporting the game and improving the performance, that’s sadly a rarity now and should be applauded, i would like to see mGPU support in a future update, ala Gears of War 4

    1. Look at it from another perspective: the players have been suffering from horrible performance on some areas for 7 months, up until now. That´s not acceptable and the game shouldn’t had been launched in this state…

      1. Too right. It’s pitiful that some people are lauding a company for doing no more than selling goods that are fit for purpose.

      2. Game ran fine for me… And it runs better on PC then on console, even before this patch (console locked to 30fps). So what you’re saying has no merit. I have a i74790k and I didn’t have issues anywhere on the map
(4k@60fps). Plus if you did have issue (like I did on my i72600k) then you could have turned 1 setting from High to Medium (Static Geometry) and it completely fixed the issue. Do yo even own this game? I doubt it…

    2. “should be applauded”
Should it? Seeing how it was such a widespread problem, they obviously knew but released the game anyway.

Oh well, at least now it’s fixed, I guess.

  9. Has anyone tried this new patch on an AMD FX processor? Something like a 6300, 6320 or 6350.

    1. I’d like to see it on an FX 8350 but I stayed away from this game and did not recommend it due to heavy CPU requirements. Not sure if I can even go back to wanting this game even after patch. But will check youtube for videos. That seems to be the place to go to see performance of games after patches.

  10. Can anyone confirm this? that the optimization issues are gone? Is the game now worth $60 on PC?

    Thanks.

    1. Stuttering issues were gone few months ago (at least for me) but now this patch improved overall performance as well, not worth 60$ and not worth getting it at Winstore.

    2. There are no more issues as far as I can say, game runs fine and looks great. If you’re a racing fan then absolutely worth it. Same can be said for Gears of War 4 which also received mGPU patch recently, there are no more issues on that game except physics being locked to 30 fps but it still looks great and one of the best performing game I have seen.

  11. Not to be a D.
But this looks like garbage and I can’t see how it could ever possibly have issues because it looks so bad. See how I did that? 😀

  12. They should let you ride waves in this game. Why do all racing games involving cars have to be set on land? It’s racist.

  13. great news for people who are willing to suffer the appstore … call me its available in some PC store

  14. Meh, those awful pop in issues (which was added to the game via it’s first performance patch) are still there.

Also they are releasing a new DLC, they didn’t fixed it because people suffered they just want to sell you the new 20$ DLC.

  15. In a nutshell, it’s due to such factors as,

    – lack of trust in Microsoft’s UWP given their history with GFWL
    – locked down nature of UWP (no mods, etc)
    – concerns re: Microsoft’s long-term intentions (see Tim Sweeney’s vocal stance)
    – Microsoft bringing Xbox/console-style business models to PC gaming
    – how utterly abysmal Windows 10 Store is in many ways relative to Steam and even Origin, GOG Galaxy & Uplay
    – sometimes needless and even counter-productive exclusivity, e.g. the DX11 version of Quantum Break on Steam runs better than the DX12 Win 10 Store version
    – it limits the potential userbase for multiplayer games relative to how many people would be playing online so finding other players to compete against will be more of a challenge relative to if the games were on Steam

  16. I’m pretty sure that when Microsoft launched GFWL they didn’t do so with the caveat ‘Expect to up and disappear soon’.

So the Halo franchise doesn’t haven’t have a significant modding scene, right? I’m sorry but your point is a non-point and smacks of blindly defending Microsoft.

There are myriad ways in which Steam is superior to Win 10 Store and it’d take too long to list them all!

The “only genuine complaints” IN YOUR OPINION.

It’s just a console brand name, yes.

If you want a strictly policed store akin to what consoles offer then Win 10 Store is for you. Others prefer the more open nature of Steam in that respect regardless of whether it has more poor quality games which we won’t be buying anyway. The most popular gaming platforms all traditionally have plenty of shovelware be that Atari 2600, NES, PS1, PS2 and Wii. Steam is no different. It’s a sign of success.

    1. Straw man argument.

“Honestly petty” which is ‘honestly’ only your opinion. I’ve not been “factually wrong” on any point regardless of what you choose to believe.

Indeed. I never claimed otherwise so that’s a moot point.

“That’s all that matters” to you which doesn’t mean it’s ‘all that matters’.

      Another wrong assumption… “honestly”.

      Enjoy your GFWL 2.0.
