Forza Horizon 3 – PC performance patch is now live, full release notes revealed

Turn 10 has just released the promised PC performance patch for Forza Horizon 3. According to the release notes, Turn 10  has increased the number of concurrent threads used by the render architecture, thus taking further advantage of DX12 capabilities to allow the visuals to be processed out of order during the frame.

In addition, Turn 10 has updated the game’s threading affinity model to make better use of all available cores.

As a result of those optimizations, PC gamers should see better framerates, especially those that were CPU limited, on High or Ultra settings.

Turn 10 has also added some additional graphical options to improve framerate for those playing on lower specification PCs, and added support for a number of wheels.

This patch will be auto-downloaded from the Windows Store, and you can read its complete changelog below. Oh, and we’ll be sure to test this patch and let you know whether it increases overall performance and whether it’s now possible to enjoy Surfers Paradise in glorious 60fps.

PC Update Improvements

Alongside the release of the Forza Horizon 3 Hot Wheels expansion we are pleased to announce numerous critical improvements included in the Windows 10 PC version of the game. These improvements are included in today’s automatic update, and do not require the Hot Wheels expansion to take advantage of.

Improved CPU Performance

We have observed that a large portion of players are CPU limited when trying to run Forza Horizon 3 at high frame rates, including locked 60 FPS and unlocked. By analyzing telemetry, we have developed targeted optimizations for this group of affected players by increasing the number of concurrent threads used by the render architecture. We have taken further advantage of DX12 capabilities to allow the visuals to be processed out of order during the frame, in order to reduce synchronization stalls and decrease CPU execution duration. These changes result in a significant CPU performance gain on High or Ultra settings when running on PCs of Recommended spec or better.

Updated Thread Model

We have updated our threading affinity model to make better use of all available cores. Along with this change, we have added a new graphics option to disable the new model, should you prefer. This option can be found in the Video Settings menu under “Threaded Optimization”.

More Graphical Options

We have also added some additional graphical options to improve framerate for those playing on lower specification PCs. These include:

· Dynamic Geometry Quality now has a Very Low option
· World Car Level of Detail now has a Very Low option

These are combined with some existing options to create a new “Very Low” preset that can be used with dynamic optimization.

Additionally, all options have had their descriptions updated to include information on how each setting affects the CPU performance, GPU performance, and available VRAM, so that players can better understand the performance impact that tweaking each setting will have.

  1. For all the game’s faults, I’ve got to give them credit for continuing to support and improve their game this long after launch, especially considering it’s probably already dead on PC. Hopefully it improves things as much as they’re claiming.

    1. Alot more people would be buying it if it was available on Steam or GOG. The windows store is long dead (As if it was ever alive LUL).

      1. I don’t think so!. On Steam you can’t play together with xbox one players. Its not possible to cross play between Steam and different network. Gears 4 and Forza have great multiplayer shared between Xbox and PC. And 90% of gamers are on consoles. Nobody want Steam version limited to 10% of players.

        1. Nobody wants to play with Xbone’s awful playerbase. The PC playerbase would be at least 20x-30x greater if it was released on Steam.

      2. Actually Windows Store isn’t dead. At least not for first-party games. Especially with cross-play compatibility and expansion of Xbox Live integration.

MS do have a huge credibility issue after the Quantum Break fiasco, which was handled incredibly poorly. But I wouldn’t hesitate to buy first party games on the Windows Store platform. It’s no different than having to use Origin for EA games or UPlay for Ubisoft garbage if you hate your life enough to buy their crap.

    2. The last two updates that were aimed at improving performance did nothing and you give them credit?

The game came out 7 months ago and we’re only just getting what sounds like a good patch for the issues and you give them credit?

They focused on nothing but DLC for those 7 months while ignoring the PC issues and you give them credit?

      1. The truth hurts but you’re spot on.
They definitely focused on $$$ first before fixing the issues that plagued this ‘build your virtual social media profile’ racing game.

Oh wait, that was my gripe to begin with.

      2. I never said they haven’t f*cked up along the way, including its state at launch. That’s the situation we unfortunately had though, and plenty of other developers would’ve just abandoned it. And you do have to consider that improving CPU thread optimization is probably something that required them to rework major parts of the engine, which isn’t a quick and dirty process by any means. I’d rather have them take the time they need to make everything work than roll out something like that piecemeal, potentially breaking other things along the way.

As for the DLC issue, that’s sh*tty but also down to Microsoft more than Turn 10 (which is not the case with the engine issues).

      3. I’ve been getting full 4k with max settings since launch. I’m running an i7 5820k 6 cores overclocked to 4.6ghz. the game has always used every core. I also have 32 gigs of ddr4 running in Quad Channel and a very very overclocked GTX 1080 and I run the game off a Intel pcie nvme ssd.

The recent patch has boosted my frame rate but I was already at 60.

The problem is if you set textures to ultra they will be 4k textures which eat tons of gpu memory. It’s also an open world game so that data needs to stream in very fast.

Welcome to the next generation of pc gaming. The old consoles spoiled pc gamers for a very long time. Now we are moving on which means higher end CPUs, faster hard drives and gpus with lots of memory..

This isn’t a game that’s easily maxed out. It’s already well optimized and they keep making improvements. If you have issues then you have a bottleneck somewhere.

Find it and and go spend some money. I had to buy a new gpu and once I did it ran flawless

        1. lol Forza Horizon 3 was not optimised at all before the Hot Wheels patch. There was COUNTLESS reports of poor performance no matter the PC.

“the game has always used every core.” Oh so dsogaming reporting that it is now using more cores better after this update and the developer ACTUALLY posting on how they have improved the game to it uses more cores is a lie?

“We have updated our threading affinity model to make better use of all available cores. Along with this change, we have added a new graphics option to disable the new model, should you prefer. This option can be found in the Video Settings menu under “Threaded Optimization”.” Their words

I guess since you had no problems that means the game is perfect right? Give me a break.

          1. I know there were countless reports I’m an Xbox ambassador so I was helping people all the time.

8/10 people had the wrong settings for their specs.

I’d never say a game has no issues because I’ve had no issues. I had to buy a new gpu to get the performance and I had to overclock it.

That doesn’t mean the game wasn’t optimized it means it’s a next generation game. Think crysis and crysis 3. If you set certain things to ultra, like the ai cars for example it is a huge hit to performance because of the level of detail in the models. Same goes for textures, shadows, reflections, they are all insanely you intensive.

The optimization in the latest patch is for less powerful cpus. CPUs without multi threading for example like the i5 series.

The game uses all 6 of my cores and will use as many threads as possible and it does that because as I said before it’s streaming a highly detailed world and most people don’t have the hardware to do it. Microsoft is doing this with most of their games. Gears 4 is another example. Running it maxed out at 4k takes absurd power and it’s not an optimization issue it’s a the game is pushing boundaries.

Crysis…there was a reason it took a couple years for most people to run it properly.

          2. I’m failing to believe this given that everybody was having issues, even someone with a 6950X was having damn issues with it. I’m running an i7-4790k with a GTX 1080 and 16gb RAM and was struggling to stay above 50 in Surfer’s Paradise, now it’s pushing 90 and in other places I’m getting 120fps after this update.

          3. No not everyone. Some people. SOME

Just because you have an issue doesn’t mean I do and just be because I don’t have an issue doesn’t mean you don’t.

The number of people with issues is far smaller than those who do and it’s all down to hardware configuration, drivers, firmware, a million variables and with THIS patch clearly they found some variables and fixed them.

Like I said I’ve been playing maxed out above 60 fps at 4k since day 1. I’m sorry you couldn’t but I’m glad you can now.

    3. Why would you say that it’s dead on PC? Forza Horizon 3 is the best arcade racing game to hit the PC in almost forever. There are absolutely no alternatives that can even get close to it.

  2. Thanks for this news DSOG <3 I've been refreshing the update page like a crack cocaine addict this week ! 😀

  3. Absolutely brilliant game, looks stunning in places too, just as a poster also said below, I have barely been away from the website eagerly awaiting the update and seeing what’s its in store!

  4. Well after checking the neogaf forum performance thread it seems the game is finally playable might bite.

It would be nice if they could implement those fixes in forza 6 apex

  5. So my experience is very positive. I can finally drive down the city areas (which were notorious for dropping your fps) without dropping from 60fps (Which I have it locked to) and all of my four cores seem to be being used.

  6. Damn this update is EPIC! The game really runs at a solid 60 FPS(in locked FPS mode, that I tested) in 5760×1080 on my i7-3930k. My FPS where all over the place from 32 to 60 etc, this is a huge and legit performance increase. Finally its fixed! I really love the game so this is amazing.

Also I just found this site it owns, and I will visit it everyday m/.

  7. Now all it needs it multi-gpu support for some HDR 144Hz 4K gaming as soon as the monitors by acer/asus are out.

    1. I dont think until volta comes out, that you will be able to get near 144 fps at 4k. I dont think volta will be able to that tbh.

        1. Well your going to have to wait if there will be SLI support if ever.. Trust me this game saved me from buying another evga FTW 1080 card to go sli.. But until after volta I dont think we will see a single card solution that will run 144hz and also Forza will have to have that vsync for it to be smooth as glass. I want telemtry for sim commander so I can have better ffb to my butt kicker on the seat. It’s good now, but a good sim commander can make it vibrate like your in motion much more realistically. Then you can hook it up to a motion rig and viola, hotwheels is like disney world.

  8. I’m going to say it like this… The longer you dont play, the more xp everyone else is getting. There is NO REASON you wont enjoy this game if your a gamer who likes driving.
