Mafia 3 – Update will add support for higher framerates, post-launch PC improvements planned [UPDATE]

Hangar 13 has issued an official statement about the state of Mafia 3’s PC version. According to the development team, an update will add support for higher framerates. Although there isn’t any ETA, Hangar 13 aims to release this patch very soon.

As the development team noted:

“We are currently working on an update for PC that will give players the option to play Mafia III at higher framerates. We’ll share more details about the update, and when you can expect it to arrive, very soon. In the meantime, the team welcomes feedback and would like to hear from you about what performance adjustment options are important to you. We’re actively considering a number of additional post-launch improvements on PC that would give players more control over how they can tailor the game’s experience to suit their rig’s performance.”

As a result of that, our PC Performance Analysis will be slightly delayed in order to give the team enough time to polish the game. After all, this is something we’ve done for several games that were released in a really mediocre state.

For the time being, we strongly suggest avoiding the game until Hangar 13 releases this PC patch!

UPDATE:

According to the development team, a patch that will add an option for 30fps, 60fps and unlimited fps to Mafia 3 may be released this weekend.

“We currently have a patch running here at the studio that includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options in the video menu, among other improvements for the PC version of Mafia III. We’re verifying the patch now to ensure everything is working as expected. If everything goes well, we expect the update to go live this weekend. We will be keeping the PC community up-to-date on the status of the patch throughout the weekend and thank you for all the feedback!”

        1. Only in multiplayer with the washed out textures and using an adaptive resolution(almost never hitting 1080p most of the time under 900p ROFL)
Lol poor console peasant enjoy mediocroty and compromises XD

    1. At least when we have 30 fps its perfect 30fps with not a single drop on ultra graphics while your peasant tablet hardware camouflaged into a “gaming” box get you medium settings at 20-27fps

    2. Enjoy your 720p 10 fps pixelated graphics. while i on my 2500k 4.2 ghz gtx 970 g1 gaming 12 gb ddr 3 1600 mhz will play it max settings 1440p 60 fps when the patch releases!!!

        1. And i at 60 fps on my1440p 24” 60 hz DELLP2416D monitor thati have but unfortunately not HDR because current pc monitors dot support HDR and i will need to buy a 4k tv for that tbut i will not because i dont use tv anymore since i see all tv series and movies on pc nowdays . How will you play it at 1080 p HDR? Will they release HDR monitors at lower resolution tham 4k?

          1. The PS4 Pro is releasing November 10, it renders games in a higher resolution than 1080p but is not native 4k for most games, and it supports HDR. Mafia 3 is going to get support for it, was announced a few days ago.

Some games either render in a resolution like 1800p/1890p/1980p and then upscale, some render in native 2160p, some use other rendering techniques like checkerboard rendering which means the game is rendering like 2 times the number of pixels of 1080p and the rendering technique (which is built into the GPU) used will create 2160p images from it. And even other games combines these techniques, ie. use checkerboard on 900p to make it 1800p, then upscale to 2160p.

And yes, only a little while ago I was looking for a 4k monitor that does HDR but there are non, supposedly they are coming tho…

    3. Still talking? OK, fine;

“The very first Gears of War game cost $12 million to develop, and it made about $100 million in revenue. It was very profitable.

By the end of the cycle, Gears of War 3 cost about four or five times more than the original to make. The profit was shrinking and shrinking. We calculated that, if we built Gears of War 4, the budget would have been well over $100 million, and if it was a huge success, we could break even. Anything less could put us out of business.”

      1. same with crisis and the pc versions sold the most, crysis 2 and 3 were made with pc sales of the first game. So much for consoles amking profit.

    4. That’s the point we will wait, and not buy at all, if the game isn’t up to scratch.
There’s no reason to rush to get any game, it’s new to you the day you buy it, regardless of when it released, and much better after patching as well.

    1. They should, but oh well: it’s their own profits they’re eating into.

I’m certainly not complaining about them forcing themselves to drop the price much sooner.

    2. What is f’d up is this comment: “”In the meantime, the team welcomes feedback and would like to hear from you about what performance adjustment options are important to you.”” The reason this is so f’d up is simple. Why did they not question pc gamers before the game was released…. I have the answer. They cant have the PC game looking and running so dayum good (above 60fps) and blowing away the PS4 and XBOX versions. Thats just bad for business. Especially when 85% of their sales are coming from the consoles. Got it? Good…..Get it! Dont buy this game until the patch. That way we dont let these biatch a-s-s money hungry PC neglecting a-holes get away with this intentional shiiit!!!!! F’ing a-holes!!!

      1. What you siad about that they did that on purpose to not make console gamers angry dotn make sense because all games on pc has been running at 60+ fps for more than a decade. It is not something that is new to pc . Games with unlimited fps has existed for too long.

        1. And the last decade of PC Gaming history hasn’t been riddled with sad, pathetic, ridiculous excuses & justifications as to why the PC version runs at 30 FPS, instead of 60 FPS, or unlocked FPS?

Excuses ranging from things like “it’s more cinematic this way! It’s totally intentional, I swear!” to “oh… uh…. well….. it’s kind-of baked into the engine, so, um, well, “technically,” even if we could find a flying f*ck to give, there’s really nothing we can do about it, anyway.”

        2. it is on conspiracy theory side but i do heard story about sony and MS want developer to “limit” their pc version of the game to be the same as console version so the console version did not looking bad compared to pc version because MS and sony also want to tell console gamer that their new console is on par with high end pc. it is something that i heard when the new gen console first comes out. PS4 for example already doing quite well vs Xbone. but why they still want to release PS4 pro? part of it has to do with their current PS4 cannot go head to head with “high end pc”

          1. Also, as it turns out, midway through the console cycle, they begin to lose steam to the PC, as people who want graphics move over to the PC ^^

          2. Plus PC is much more “ALL-IN-ONE” but not everybody can afford a formidable pc setup.

          3. Sony has already said that the reason they release ps4 pro is because they afraid of losing console gamers to pc and that why they release ps4 pro but ps4 pro is already outdated compared to powerful pc.

    1. right thing to do is for everyone to not buy this game until it goes under a heavy discount, yes i’m saying wait more than a year, that’s how you can punish low quality devs

      1. I agree.. we will torrent this and we will create our on patch before they realease their patch…. Torrent this shiiiit!!! I only hope this is not Denuvo 🙁

  1. The coommunity backlash was strong on this one. As consumers we have the power to answer with our wallets. Seeing that their pc sales would drop 99% no doubt they gonndo something.

  2. Are they any good and polished AAA game released this year ?

    “higher framerates”
F’ed up physics, frame drops and stuttering comes to mind.

      1. good port of a terrible franchise 🙁

I got a free nvidia coupon for it, but it means win 10 1607 🙁

        1. I will buy this coupon from you for 20-30 usd. I already bought GoW4 but I want play cooperative with my friends. If you want sell your game please write to me

        2. Can ypu please sell it to me. No that stupid Amiga 4000. He dont deserve it. Iam King and Leader Shredder Orokusaki of the Foot Clan. I am the THE SHREDDER. But what Amgia 4000 is compared to a glorious leader and warrior like me? He is a worm! A worm ! A coward! Give it to me!

          1. Hey you know that i am the best and not him! born2expire must give his code to me!!!

    1. Gears of War 4 – best optimized PC game of this year. Game GPU give this game more stars in ‘optimization’ than any other PC game in 2016. Full DX12 support, multi-gpu, above 150fps on GTX 1080on Ultra settings. Clear win for 2016 GOTY for best optimized PC game

        1. I think that on PC and Xbox this is clear GOTY:

          – best optimization (GameGPU),
          – best graphics (DX12, multi gpu, async shaders, full dynamic GI),
          – long single player capaign
          – cooperative campaign for two players !!!
          – split screen on PC
          – LAN party on PC (offline multiplayer)
          – cooperative multiplayer against AI – Horde 3.0
          – standard multiplayer

No other PC game can do that. Clear win for GOTY

          1. On paper, sure, but like I said, Video Game Awards are handed out to the highest bidder, not the “most boxes checked” game.

It’ll probably score an award or two for itself, sure, but GOTY, doubtful. Even if they don’t sell it off to the highest bidder, they’ll just go for the one that’s made the most noise this year. Gears 4 has made a fair amount of noise, sure, but its status as an “exclusive” also limits its widespread appeal.

          2. Show me other PC game with at least half points “checked by Gears”. I know you hate MS but there aren’t any other such PC game. You like or not but this is clear GOTY.

            IGN 92/100
            Polygon 9/10
            Dualshockers 9/10
            … and more

          3. Amiga, this isn’t my anti-Microsoft thing, I just really don’t expect Gears to win GOTY.

Like I said, it’s not about how many boxes are checked, it’s about what the most popular IP is, &/or who’s paid the most money.

Just look at the last few years’ worth of awards & nominations, you’ll see what I mean. Metacritic review scores, etc. mean very little to the awards people, as long as you’ve scored decently.

Gears will most probably get nominated, & it’ll probably get a couple of the other awards, but GOTY itself? Not a chance.

          4. Honestly? Nothing. Everything I’ve actually played from 2016 either requires more time to become either good, or complete (Hitman, Mankind Divided both need more content, & MD specifically needs a whole re-release to the point wherein I’m recommending people wait on the Director’s Cut rather than play that thing now), No Man’s Lie is a f*cking joke, & way too controversial to even be nominated;

Call of Duty will definitely get nominated, even though it’ll almost definitely be released as a buggy mess, Battlefield 1 as well, even though its Campaign will most likely be total a$$ (not to mention the bugs >.>), either due to EA’s & Activision’s checks, or simply because those two IP’s are just way too big to ignore, & Titanfall 2 will probably get nominated as well, if its release isn’t completely tanked…..

Some would argue for DOOM (which I found to be a thoroughly mediocre FPS, wholly undeserving of the “DOOM” moniker, even though it is a solid C-grade FPS on its own), Dark Souls 3 (also “meh”, in my opinion – better than DS2, sure, but not quite DS or Demon’s Souls either), & there’ll be a fairly vocal crowd trying to argue for Watch_Dogs 2, I’ll bet, but, I doubt if any of those will actually win without a serious bribe.

The PoorStation 4 fanboys will shout wildly for Uncharted 4, the Xblow fanboys will scream for Gears 4, but I wouldn’t bet on either of them. Dishonored 2 will probably get nominated so long as it doesn’t do something ridiculously stupid & end up being a f*cking joke (ala-XCOM 2), but as for the actual winner, itself? Honestly, while I seriously do not believe it deserves it, I’d be willing to bet Overwatch wins GOTY 2016.

Blizzard’s latest joke has been extremely well received, & it’s already got a massive fanbase of sycophants ready to blindly howl its “godliness” to anyone who’ll listen.

          5. DkS3 is my GOTY so far tbh. And I thought Doom was great as well. Best shooter I’ve played in years. Haven’t played previous Doom games though.

          6. Irrelevant, whose GOTY are you talking about, there are thousands to choose from, what matters is what you like best, not what somebody else likes.

If it’s your GOTY, that should be all that matters to you.

      1. Go Away, no wait, looks like this time you are right and it’s the first optimized AAA of the year. shame it’s a mediocre game but hey you are right.

        1. Mediocre game? Are you serious? I know you hate all games created by Microsoft but Gears 4 is clear win for GOTY for best PC game in 2016

          – best optimization (GameGPU),
          – best graphics (DX12, multi gpu, async shaders, full dynamic GI),
          – long single player capaign
          – cooperative campaign for two players !!!
          – split screen on PC
          – LAN party on PC (offline multiplayer)
          – cooperative multiplayer against AI – Horde 3.0
          – best standard “team multiplayer”

No other PC game in 2016 can do that.

          1. I Updated my last comment it was a little harsh i agree. to me it’s mediocre TPS game just like the rest of them. yeah it’s optimized and graphics are ok but i don’t like GOW at all, also that split screen for PC is another plus for the game.

          2. You’re right. Some oeople like Gears others not. But I think that this will be GOTY for PC and Xbox.

            IGN 92/100
            Polygon 9/10
            Dualshockers 9/10

          3. Just for the record; even if I actually regarded IGN, Polygon & Dualshockers as completely unbiased, exemplary members of the video game journalists community (which I SERIOUSLY do not), I’d still feel compelled to off-balance all those cherry-picked scores with something that recounts a rather different story (not to mention has a rather cleaner review record than those cheap wh*res you’re quoting);

            “The good:

            – Engine scalability means the game runs like a beast on high-end PCs and still offers really solid performance on lower-specced systems (including, of course, Xbox One).
            – Evolution over revolution ultimately works in the online modes’ favor, thanks to great new foes for Horde mode and a fantastic mix of maneuvers, weapons, and level designs for versus.
            – The Buzzsaw weapon. It rips, man.

            The bad:

            – Horde 3.0’s class system sticks players with boring duties, not exciting superpowers.
            – Cards can be unlocked or purchased, but the game is ultimately more fun when they’re ignored.

            The ugly:

            – The entire campaign mode. In my dream world, fans would be given the option to drop $20 from the box price to skip it.

Bottom line: Online-shooter fans and 4K enthusiasts should buy.”

Source: ArsTechnica – “Gears of War 4: The next gen is now—if you’re on Windows 10, at least”

I found his harsh rip into the campaign particularly interesting, as it makes me look forward to seeing what the community consensus ends up being on it. Will Gears 4 be the next Halo 4, or the next Halo 5, in the end? O.o

          4. oh come on man gow is a horrible series made for xbot dudebros and that comes from someone that loves shooters.

          5. I know :)) i even hate games like Doom, last year you tricked me into buying wolf and i hated it, 40GB~ download only played it 1 hour, and that was a good shooter, imagine how i feel about this dudebro crap.

          6. :)) only the reboot, yeah didn’t liked it, it was good but i don’t know i couldn’t enjoy playing it.

      2. With visuals like this game at low it should be playing at 150+ FPS on a 460 as IMO the game looks worse then halo 1 on the PC at least when Gears of war 4 is at low.

        1. Well i stick to it the textures are just so horrible in gears of war 4(on low) i mean they actually look as bad as goldeneye for the n64.

      3. On the old and outdated 1080p resolution that this numbers are from as we see. But from Nvidia benchamrk that got released 2 days ago it seems like that my 970 will play on insane 1440p 24 fps . At least the game will be playble for me at max settings. Then in 2018 when i buy new gpu i will play it again but this time on 60 fps!

    1. “Hey Mafia fans,

We’ve excited to bring you the long awaited Denuvo patch. To celebrate, the game will be -15% off this weekend and your existing save games will no longer work. Go f*ck yourselves.

      Regards,
      Your friends at 2K”

          1. Denuvo is made by the same team who made SecuROM back in the day, so, arguably, those two, at the very least, are cousins, no? 😛

          2. Yeah but it’s D’s re*arded cousin, they already cracked it day one when GTAV came out and they already cracked Mafia 3.

          3. Of cousr they cracked day one becuase it is not as strong as denuvo. Denuvo games are the only ones currently who takes weeks or months to be crackedd evrything else is cracked day one

      1. WAIT the game does not have denuvo? How did they screwed that up, it is now clear they rushed the game.

  3. I’ve seen reports that the game speed slows down if you manually lock it to lower fps (15 in this case), meaning the game logic is tied to frame rate. Who knows if they can fully unf*ck this thing. What a joke, how did this not set off red flags all over the office when they were designing this?

  4. TBH, as silly as it is that this issue even exists, I have to commend that for a quick response and being open to implementing changes.

    1. They deserve no commendation, this is an issue that has been pretty much gone in the Western AAA scene, this is the kind of thing you see from Japanese PC ports.
This should never have been an issue, this is something that could have and should have been fixed at the start of development.

All it does is prove that the PC version is 100% a console port and an afterthought.

  5. I would return my preorder but it got it for 35% off (hence the preordrer)

I guess I’ll just have to wait for them to fix, but I feel dirty doing it.

  6. “..the team welcomes feedback and would like to hear from you about what performance adjustment options are important to you…”
Are you kidding me?? It’s a surprise that people wanted 60fps or higher? You need feedback to find that out? Really?
That’s unbelievable, like literally I don’t believe that lol. I think what happened is they were crunching to get the game out on console, and didn’t have the time or resources to make those adjustments. I don’t believe this is surprising to them at all, no one is that stupid.

I refuse to take it personally though. I’m not buying this game right now, but once they patch it, AND I’ve seen some bench marks showing how it performs at 60+ fps, well then I’ll reconsider. In the mean time there’s always Gears of War 4, which despite being from evil windows is getting high praise for not just it’s performance, but for the large amount of options provided.

  7. Damn, that’s one hell of a secret entrance you found, mate!

Really masterfully blends into the surroundings, don’t you think?

  8. my concern is when the fps is unlocked, will there be stuttering…if there is, then there’s no point to it. I will just buy the xbox one or PS4 version. 30fps capped doesn’t feel good when aiming with mouse! so I might as well used a controller.

  9. Arkane are mostly former thief’s devs. I’m sure they will do a much better job. am not that worried about dishonored 2.

  10. there seems to be a shadow bug based on distance a camera angle? It’s like the cloud shadows fading in and out?! sigh…

    1. Honestly that and the ludicrous pop-in of detail and shadows and relatively short distances is THE most annoying for me.

    2. That also happens on the PS4 version. Really weird, it was bright and sunny, then turned a corner and there was a few metres where it was like a giant building was blocking the sun, well, it looked more like I was suddenly surrounded by giant buildings since the brightness was completely gone and the light looked like the sky was overcast. Drive a few metres further and it suddenly was bright again! I looked around nothing could’ve been blocking the sun.

Also when grabbing the boat in the canal behind The Voice can have some interesting results, the textures of the boat at one time kept blinking like crazy and the pop up during movement was so bad that it looked like a wide water clearing, then suddenly some construction in the water pops up, I ended up on top of it since I couldn’t break anymore.

  11. Safe to assume they were pretty close to a patch; it just didn’t make release and they didn’t want to delay the game..

      1. I hear you but I’m sure they weighed their options and delaying the game last minute likely just wasn’t something they could do.

        1. They could delay it. it’s their game, and choice, and can be made for each platform.
Give me a late PC version done well, anyday. Console can have it earlier, we don’t mind, if it’s done right, and GTA5 proved that.

        2. I just said that this should never have been an issue to begin with.
They consciously chose to build the game for consoles and PC was a last minute concern.
Delaying the PC version or releasing a post release patch are the same thing.

    1. Well they should have, even if it was just the PC version delayed, most of us would rather the games delayed, and put right, than get the console limits on PC.

We’d own consoles, as well, if that was acceptable to us, as do those who can’t live without the subpar exclusives.

  12. Sounds like an incoming mostrosity of a PC port that’ll get fixed after launch, rather than before release like it should be.

  13. Good on their end actually! As long as the patch comes out in the first few days i see nothing wrong with it. Its when they want people to wait over a week before releasing the patch when i think something is wrong. Sadly guys consoles come first will be that way for a little while longer maybe not forever. This is speaking from a PC user its just facts.

    1. Because the game is going to sell like crazy on console and they needed to make sure the game ran great on PS4, XB1 and PS4 Pro first before PC.

  14. It has ID tech 6 modified version that on my 2500k gtx 970 12 gb ram runs at 4k max settings at 30+ fps. Dont worry. Also it is a stealth game a game where most of the time you walk on empty roads or try to avoid enemies not a fast paced action with lot of enemies like Doom and because of that it will be must less demandiing compared to it.

    1. I think they cleared up that it’s a fork of id tech 5, not 6. So don’t take any technology from Doom for granted, Dishonored 2 may have legacy issues we remember from RAGE.

Also, I’m certain you’re wrong about how “demanding” the game will be. Dishonored has more open, more detailed levels than Doom. And there were no “lot of enemies” in Doom, it had a 12 enemy limit. Dishonored 2 very likely has more than 12 enemies in each level and they will be active from the start, not spawn in as the player goes from one room to the next. Doom literally spawns enemies in as you go along, out in the open with no attempt to hide this behaviour. Dishonored 2 can’t get away with that, enemies will have to be there before you arrive. Dishonored 2 is hands-down a more demanding type of game than Doom 2016 which cut some ridiculous corners.

        1. wolfenstein was locked at 60 fps, had massive tearing without Vsync, which made it basically unplayable due to the input lag, and texture pop-in was pretty atrocious.

id tech 6 was a massive improvement in pretty much every regard. i would hope dishonored 2 wouldn’t have the legacy issues of wolfenstein.

      1. “don’t take any technology from Doom for granted, Dishonored 2 may have legacy issues we remember from RAGE.”

Isn’t id Tech 6 just id Tech 5 with new-gen platforms support, Vulkan, real-time lighting, & a few other changes courtesy of CryEngine, though?

        1. Judging by how totally different Doom looks from Rage I don’t think the changes are minor. It would be interesting to see the id tech people, especially the rendering guy who used to work at Crytek, do a presentation on the changes from 5 to 6.

          1. True, but couldn’t that just be a change to the rendering system?

Like, honestly, DOOM looks kind-of like a souped up version of DOOM 3, so this could all just possibly be them reverting to some pre-RAGE settings, & working off of that, no?

Agreed, I’d love to have one of those presentations on this. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if that’ll happen anymore now that Carmack isn’t with them anymore, but one can always hope.

  15. I might get flak for this but honestly it seems as if the PC gaming community is getting to the point where they only consider well optimized games good. Don’t get me wrong, this 30fps lock is a garbage thing to do but lately I see games on steam with high user reviews when in reality they are really mediocre or simply just subpar. The only thing about those games is that it’s well optimized. Something like Gemini Heroes Reborn comes to mind. Game has some of the most horrible ai out there with a mediocre combat system yet it’s an average 9/10…… Same with for example Lords Of Shadow 2. The game looks great, runs great but is extremely subpar yet also has a 9. I’m not saying unoptimized games should get higher scores, no on the contrary, they should get low scores. What I’m saying is that it’s as if the PC community simply looks at performance and visuals instead of whether or not the game itself is actually good.

    1. If you look back at any successful game of the past (that got high ratings) you will find that you can call most of them out on something like “horrible AI” or “mediocre combat”. A game can be fun overall, for many users, without getting AI or combat perfectly right.

Performance and stability are objective disqualifiers whereas gameplay flaws are subjective. If your observation is true that actually paints Steam user reviews in a positive light imo. Sounds like Steam users are mature enough to say “just not my type of game” when it comes to gameplay. Doesn’t everyone have a few genres he doesn’t like? I can’t get into strategy games, particularly turn-based ones. I tried on a few occasions but if I had to describe them in adjectives you’d have a thoroughly negative list. Now does that mean that all strategy games deserve a bad user rating? I don’t think so, I just avoid the genre and leave it to those who enjoy it.

      1. nah man I’m not talking about those typical ai complaints that reviewers tend to throw around. I played gemini heroes and the bad ai was clearly apparent. Say for instance you are in front of an enemy, while literally WITHIN their vision, right in FRONT of them, they will lose sight of you if you simply walk around them or to the side. Cmon man you gotta admit that breaks immersion and is really lazy. And Lords Of Shadow 2, that game doesn’t live up to it’s predecessor. Lazy stealth sections, horrible ending, etc. All I’m saying is that the community tends to disregard whether or not the game is good and simply look at performance and visuals and I’ve also noticed when a game is poorly optimized, a lot of them tend to start looking for issues within the game itself.

    2. Steam=well made pc versions get hig ratings.

A game can be bad, but the important thing is that it works, if not what prevents me from getting another game from steam instead? Steam is not a objective review source, pc version quality source.

      1. Well yeah that’s what I’m starting to realize. In all honesty I’m at the point where I don’t look at reviews in general, steam, “professional” critics etc

  16. Well I didn’t buy gemini heroes per se and I only bought Lords Of Shadow 2 because it was a game I was looking forward to.

  17. Yes, PC gaming can be great, I’ve done it for many years too, wasn’t just a console gamer. I’ve been gaming since the early 80s and used everything under the sun, remember the days when you got a new game and had to tweak memory resident programs and fiddle with QEMM memory manager to squeeze out that extra 1 or 2KB the game needed to run. Last PC I had had dual nVidia GTX8800 in SLI about 10 years ago. I spent more time fiddling with settings and trouble shooting than actually gaming (ok, this is somewhat exaggerated), also didn’t help that I used Linux as my main OS and to play a game I had to boot into Windows. So I went back to being just a console gamer and haven’t regretted ever since. I for one feel I should have done that sooner and not have spent money on a €3000 PC 🙂

I can understand tho that people who never did all that, were console gamers all this time, suddenly love PC gaming more! We all are just different.

And yes, the PS4 Pro won’t outpace his €2000 PC but it isn’t supposed to be, the games they’ve already shown on 4k screens look marvellous compared to their 1080p counterparts. It’s a step up from 1080p that’s for sure!
