Tekken 7 may not support cross-play due to first party companies and potential security risks

Cross-play is a feature that a lot of gamers were looking forward to. While Microsoft tested this feature back in the X360 days with Shadowrun, it was never really supported by other developers until recently. And while Street Fighter V offers such a thing, it appears that the next ‘big’ fighting game won’t.

According to Tekken project leader, Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken 7 won’t support cross-play due to first party company policies, as well as potential security hacks.

As Katsuhiro tweeted (translated by Avoiding The Puddle):

“It’s not a matter of the technology for getting the PS4/XB1/PC players to match up against each other being the issue, but rather first party company policies and potential security risks alongside the community perceived reputation of PC gamers being cheaters that is hindering the decision to allow cross platform play.”

So there you have it, no cross-play between PC, Xbox One and PS4. Which really sucks as one of the coolest features of Street Fighter V is the ability to play with your friends, no matter the platform they game on.

Here is hoping that Bandai Namco will re-consider it.

  1. No matter what others say yeah on pc there is a lot of cheaters who are 13years old kids who dont know how to have fun

    1. Anticheat isnt a hard thing, the thing here is that console developers are lazy, because they rely on the console security to avoid cheaters. But once the console get hacked, not console or devs do anything to ban cheaters or implement any system to avoid them, you can tell that to Xbox 360/PS3 call of duty players, their official servers are full of hackers who play in a hacked console. This is BANCO and theyll will go lazy, no matter what. They just want to get some bucks from PC market.
You know what is the best anticheat system, add friends from the match finder list. Every PC fighting game on steam has it and you can add people to play with.

      1. they could put a list of platforms you could join in for example if im on ps4, i tick to play with xbox one players and not pc players (for example)

and to add to that, this is a 1v1 fighting game so if there is even cheaters in this game its really hard to ruin the game, and as you said, if for example im on ps4 and my friend is on pc, i can go and play with him without any worry but this devs thinks we are retarded, while its all a mask for “first party company policies” crap and they can even change that if they really wanted to, im sure the minute they smell a dollar more they will put it in all games

    1. Depends on the game, actually. Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3 was riddled to hell & back with cheaters.

Likewise, Diablo 3, whereas PC Diablo 3 was far better protected.

Alternatively, sure, some games have far more PC-oriented cheating communities, but even so, “more common” is really just subjective.

      1. in regards to Diablo 3 the pc version is even more strict than the console version. it is one of always online game even when playing single player portion of the game. many people see that as an effort by blizzard to curb piracy although it seems blizzard did not want admit it as such. and we know it is really the case when PS3 version of diablo 3 did offered offline play on single player campaign.

PS3 once considered as the most secured console before they were cracked. even capcom admit that they like PS3 platform the most because of that reason back then. sony most likely regret it the most to allow user to install other OS on PS3.

    2. Its a fact, yeah, but not a reason to say, “we will not implement crossplay because PC gamers are cheaters”, as banco said technically “the community perceived reputation of PC gamers being cheaters”. If for Banco “the community” is those crybabies on SRK and Eventhubs then they are wrong. I bet if they do a pool between PS4 players I think most of them are cool with the PC crossplay.

      1. As much as consoles? No, I am afraid not. Have you tried playing GTA V, that is infested with hackers still.

With how open PC is, and how anyone can create a software, it is a very hard thing to control.

People keep blaming developers for not doing much for stopping cheaters, but it isn’t their main job now is it and no matter how much they try, someone always finds an exploit? It is the player’s responsibility to ensure that they are playing fair, but even then we find a way to blame the devs.

        1. It’s their responsibility to implement good anti-cheat, & good banning mechanisms, yes.

If they haven’t even gone so far as to do that, then we have plenty of reason to be railing on them.

Not that players aren’t also responsible, obviously, but it’s not “just” our responsibility.

    1. lol you were really afraid more and more console exclusive get ported to the PC eh? the fact that developer willing to release their game on PC shows there is money to be made on the platform.

          1. I wasn’t talking about your sentence buddy. I would hate to be a grammar police.

I was talking about Walikor’s, it sounds so much like sarcasm, yet its not.

My bad on not being clear enough.

      1. yeahhhhhh like red dead redemption, bayonetta, vanquish, yakuza 0,ace combat 7,the king of Fighter , final fantasy xv , destiny and kindoms hearts
now cry pc gamer cry and make a petition rofl

        1. As opposed to, say, the other hundreds of IP’s that were once conslow exclusive, before they went multi-platform?

Oh, & btw, Vanquish is rumoured for PC, so yeah, & Red Dead Redemption doesn’t even have a sequel. I don’t know what Rocksteady’s doing with it, but if they’ve let the IP die, then yeah, obviously we’ll never get it outside of emulation, but guess what! You won’t ever get to play it outside of your PoorStation 3/X360 either! 😮

Not to mention, as I’ve said before – PC has emu’s, so eat me.

  2. “Stop right there, criminal scum!”
Oh, wait… why are them crying about it?
There´s no problem about P4 gamers playing SFV with all those “PC Master Cheating Race”. Ask any PC or console gamer if they like cross-platform in SFV or if they prefer Capcom to remove such feature.

  3. “…first party company policies and potential security risks alongside the community perceived reputation of PC gamers being cheaters…” – what a load of vague, uninformative statement alongside generally blaming all PC users for cheating.

Why did they even decided to release this game on PC then if it’s such a risky business?

Do they consider insulting potential buyers of the PC version as a valid selling strategy?

They should probably stick to peasants’ boxes; PC platform has to offer a lot of other great fighting games, starting with SF V.

    1. Competitive pc gaming has be come a bit of a joke in recent years, even on the professional/esports level it’s rampant.

Unless you have a dedicated team just for anticheat protection that release patches constantly expect your game to be full of them. It’s not insulting if it’s 100% true.

Besides pc fighting games die far quicker then the console counter parts and there is very little incentive to bring it to pc at all other then harada being more of a pc gamer himself.

      1. “Besides pc fighting games die far quicker then the console counter parts and there is very little incentive to bring it to pc at all”

Because they die faster? I disagree, if anything, that’s an even greater incentive. Publishers nowadays hate post-launch support. They think free patches & bug fixes are a waste of resources, when they could have people shelling out sh*t paid DLC packs instead. As such, the sooner the game dies, the better, as far as they’re concerned, as it means we’re more ready for the next one.

It’s not about “how long it lives”, it’s all about “how much money it makes” (especially in the first few days), & PC fighter games make plenty of money. The problem is many of them are still under the control of PC-allergic Japanese Publishers, or, PC-allergic Western Studios who don’t know how to do the job properly themselves (ex. NetherRealm Studios), which generates a massive barrier of disinterest, no matter how much money Injustice made on PC (Not to mention the double-dipping strategies some Publishers abuse, ala-GTA V).

How is Competitive PC Gaming a joke, exactly? Aside from the fact that developers treat it as a joke, that is. Slapping together something as ridiculous as EVOLVE & expecting it to just “become” a competitive game “because we appealed to the pro community!” Yeah, no, that’s not how it works. You can’t just make Quake Champions & then force it onto the Community “because we like it this way” or “we like it better” or whatnot. The Community has to choose to promote the game.

Tournaments are still as big as ever, prize pools are only growing, interest in watching them or participating in them isn’t waning, if anything, competitive play is growing. The only real problem is, as you said yourself – developers not interested in properly investing into them.

Valve has become so lazy with CSGO, now they’re letting “select members of the community” handle the banning process instead. They’ve basically admitted Valve Anti-Cheat is a joke, but they still won’t let go of it. Even so, CSGO, while it still features quite a few issues, has a vibrant competitive community.

The only reason other games aren’t capable of replicating that is due to various reasons, most of which can only be partly blamed on “rampant” PC cheating.

      2. Pretty sure you havent play a single fighting game on PC. I have all KOFs, blazblue CP EX and guilty gear Sign. I constanly receive invitations to play online, lol, even to play fightcade. We are just a different breed, while you console gamers are just a bunch of sociopats with a controller in the hand who expect to have random matches, we actually use the steam friend list to add people to play with. I play Uniel too, while I cant get a single random match, I have plenty of people on my friend list to play with.

  4. Because that’s not offensive, apparently – especially considering how cheater-plagued consales are, even though most people either don’t know, or prefer to ignore that in favour of “PC cheater pirates.” >.>

  5. For people that play SFV, how many cheaters have you encountered? It’s a legit question, because I’ve never seen big news saying “PS4 players are complaining about rampant PC cheaters in SFV”.

It’s something I’ve also wondered with regards to Rocket League. So any insight?

  6. In single player games I have no problem with cheating. It’s your own personal experience so u can do whatever you want. But multiplayer games is totally different matter.

  7. You want to avoid cheaters?, Add friends to play with. One reason PC fighting games “dies faster” is because people add friends and they create lobbies for those friends only. No real reason to go play with a random player, when you have more than 100 friends to play with.
I still play actively kof 98um, Blazblue, Guilty Gear Accent Core and others with people in my friend list and locally.

  8. Harada just respond one of my twitters with a kind “shut up”. Then he just said he didnt mention anything about pc gamers being cheaters… It was a mistranslation.
