3D environment artist, Kimmo Kaunela, has been working this past whole year on a project inspired by Naughty Dogs’ The Last Of Us. Kimmo has managed to create an amazing map, showcasing what The Last Of Us could look like in Unreal Engine 4. As always, do note that this is the creation of a single artist and not a whole studio. Enjoy the screenshots and kudos to our reader ‘Simon McInnes’ for bringing this to our attention!

Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2. All that bloody Chromatic F*cking Aberration.
WHY? WHY? F*CKING WHY?
For some shady reason it’s becoming a standard in games nowadays…
I want to sit down with the person who thought that this was a good idea and ask: WHY?
And then put said person to stand in the naughty corner.
Maybe smack em in the head to fix it too perhaps ?
Nah, I’m not into violence, allegedly. Don’t listen to the tabloids, there are out to get me.
Wait a minute… THEY SEND YOU TO GET ME ISN’T IT?!
Uh… no … no they did not, what are you talking about ? I am totally on your side.
Gooooood.
?_?
Yes… trust us… join us…
( ?°( ?° ??( ?° ?? ?°)? ?°) ?°)
GAH I KNEW IT!
There’s an obvious reason, it’s a quick and cheap solution that makes the game look more “realistic”. Earlier on, we had that annoying excessive bloom, now chromatic aberration took its place.
Both are tasteless like some crappy Instagram filters…
I’m not as opposed to it in still images… but hell this is just too much!
I can’t like this effect at all, maybe one time when I extensively tweaked it when playing Dead Space, and I’ve heard that in Alien Isolation helps with the art style/aesthetic but I haven’t tried that myself. Everything else I notice right away, all the blur and the unfocused colors… ugh, it does my head in.
Well, I said that because in Alien Isolation I though it looked awesome in screenshots… but once I played it I had to turn it off after a while.
It’s like Last-gen consoles of turning everything brown or blasting up bloom to make you unable to see the lack of texture details elsewhere. Chromatics are the new filter to make things look trendy and modern.
Shut up…
Uh, someone woke up with his knickers twisted.
death to exclusives!
The environment design is so pretty. Kudos to whoever made it.
Sure they don’t mean CryEngine 3.5? Looks exactly like Crysis 3.
Waaaay too much Chromatic Aberration…
was that bloom or volumetric fog? i kinda hate bloom and volumetric fog.. it makes everything too misty for my taste
Did anyone think that Naughty Dog’s engine didn’t cut it? LOL Maybe this is much higher resolution, but the original engine in it’s day was very strong.
TLOU Remasterd looks really great, so I can’t this looks that much better, if at all, but this is still some really great work.
:/ game still looks good without UE4 man
The Lighting in TLOU is still way better.
Not impressed at all.
Guys, just in case you forget, we’re almost in 2017… there are cpus at 4.5GHz, ddr4 3200, 5Tflops graphic cards, with insane power…
These screen shots would be impressive… 5 or 6 years ago. Today, I expect 3-5 times more and better than that!
Looks pretty fu*king sick if ya ask me. As a console only gamer, I can’t wait for games to look this good
I don’t want to be negative towards the environmental artist, but I can’t exactly say this looks better than TLOU, it’s definitely a really good go at re-creating it though, and shows the serious amount of talent Kimmo Kaunela has.
Edit: It has a considerable amount more clutter, which is neither good or bad, it’s overall very pretty though.
As if you no-talent fanboy clowns could do any better…
