It appears that NVIDIA has enabled a streamer service that impacts performance on PC systems that are equipped with its graphics cards. According to the research of Reddit’s “lhikary”, NVIDIA has automatically enabled NVIDIA Sheild Streamer Service on its drivers; a service that is useless to all those not owning a Shield device.
According to reports, this service impacts performance by 3-6% in games, so those without any Sheild devices should disable it in order to gain more framerates in their games.
All you have to do is follow lhikary’s guide:
1) Click the windows icon in the bottom left and search “services” http://i.imgur.com/NF1TAXr.png (in Windows 8.1 it’s called “local services’ )
2) Next open up services and locate “NVIDIA Streamer Service”http://i.imgur.com/JQQmRVr.png
3) Open the service and stop the service if its running then disable the service.http://i.imgur.com/lNvZSyg.png
4) Do all this and hit apply and you’ll be able to see a noticable framerate boost and drop in your cpu usage
A lot of gamers reported better results with NVIDIA’s Shield Streamer disabled.
Since this is an easy fix and does not have any negative effects on your whole gaming experience (that is if you don’t own and use a Shield device), we strongly suggest disabling this feature.
Do also note that this fix will benefit those with weaker CPUs (as you’re basically saving some CPU cycles by disabling this feature).
Have fun everyone!

People report turning off this service also disables shadowplay after you restart your pc (which you’re meant to after disabling the service) so be aware. Can’t confirm though as I don’t install any nvidia software
I’ve just tried the procedure and Shadowplay is still working after the reboot, I’ve posted the link to a friend of mine on Steam and I’ll reply if it is the same for him.
Edit: Well he is too busy playing Dirt 2 to reboot the PC, in any case I am on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
Mine’s wont turn on after disabling the service. Win 8.1.
Some say it stays working, some say it doesn’t. Very odd.
Tell your friend to try Dirt Rally, it’s pretty awesome so far.
? have disabled this service and my Shadowplay is working fine , those 2 entities are separate services.
Funny , i dont even have this service on my 860m… might be because i didnot install gforece experience
Yeap , if you haven’t installed GFE you don’t have this service at all.
This is one of the reason why people have been reporting in the past that installing GFE had bad impact at their performance.
Nvidia you done goofed. At least they should fix it in the next update otherwise , bad move.
I disabled it and indeed games are quite smoother now.
3-6% and your games are QUITE smoother?
3-6% maybe for a strong CPU , an i5 or something like that but this service is worse for an inferior CPU.
But i am on a G3258 right now and i’m playing GW2 which is CPU bound and yeah i can feel it it’s responding better.
Placebo effect.
Well i believe that i know my PC’s performance better than you do , then i drop below 30 frames on an EOTM run on GW2 before the service disable and after i’m above 30 its not 3%.
Because 3% of 30 is like non existant , pls.
pentium sucks, i7 for lyfe
>Implying that i wouldn’t buy an i7 if i could
ban low end GPUs/CPUs!! WE ONLY NEED HIGH END OR ENTHUSIAST
Simple. Just not install Geforce Experience…
Unless you want to use services like Shadowplay…
shadowplay is bullshit, you can use Bandicam its support HEVNC
Sorry say that again? I couldn’t hear you with all the stuttering. Maybe you should try shadowplay.
How is recording at 1080p 60FPS with no impact on frame-rate even in games like Crysis 3 or GTA 5, bullshit ?
Unless you really want uncompressed files, there’s no reason the hate shadowplay.
Real men only install PhysX and the Driver.
I do the same. Most of the other stuff is junk.
I’m not a man because I play GTA 5 in 3D (:
its true… and actualy the download should only 50mb since the rest are bunch of crapware.
+1 …. LOL
But easy access to nvdia CP from the lower right hand side is a must and only comes w the Geforce Experience 🙁
I don’t even have this “Nvidia streamer service” in the Services, only the Nvidia Display Driver Service. So, you’re getting this thing enabled only if you’re not doing a custom Nvidia driver installation, streamer service only comes with the Geforce Crapspirience.
Same here. I only install what I need.
Oh, that explains why I don’t have it, either. I never install that GeForce Experience thing because I know how to configure my games manually. It’s kind of an important thing to do if you game on a PC.
GFE is only useful for Shadowplay imo , the rest is crap.
Thank you very much. 😉

If you read the comments here, this tweak is largely found to do not much of anything.
i already stoped this/nvNetwork/GFExperience and bunch of other craps from nvidia’s drivers
so is my comment still needing approval?
Such comments you just forget and type the text again. None of my pending comments have come up ever. I just reworded the juicy bits and they go trough fine.
Usually its because some words are “triggering” like foul language and such. Use polite text and you should be fine.
This is kinda “how to become a gentelman in the internet” schooling.
To repeat, I read the comments on Guru3d and most people said it did nothing.
Well thank you for such great information. Man i cant even fathom what kind of parasitic programs are also wasting my comps resources that im unaware of.
1] Windows button + R > Services.msc
2] Check what is on Automatic mode and its useless and that is not
3] Profit ^^
Thanks for such great information. Just WTF is Nvidia doing? Installing unwanted garbage on user PC to reduce their peformance? f* Nvidia.
f-u-c-k AMD
It’s unwanted for you, not for everyone.
since i was in the middle of recording a ton of benchmark scores on my new system, i did some methodical testing on this service after disabling it. alas, it made no difference whatsoever.
Streaming is bad for the gaming industry. If you make gaming available for everybody it will encourage developers to develop for the lowest common denominator. And the lowest common denominator is casual gamers who want to play time wasters. So stop this game streaming PERIOD.
Watching is not playing! Also there are many things currently hurting PC gaming industry and streaming is irrelevant in compare.
BTW there were rubbish games released before streaming got viral^^.
Oh i assumed that this was a function for the “game streaming”.
And yes the industry is becoming more rubbish by the day. Mobile and Tablets are bad for the industry.
The streaming service is used *at least* for Nvidia Shield, so you can stream from your computer to your Shield device. Not really lowest common denominator since such people are usually enthusiasts like myself…
I’m playing KOTOR and Icewind Dale on my shield tablet, come at me beech xD
What are you talking about? Streaming is great, I can play my games while I’m on break at school.
cool far back did this start in the drivers? most recent? or for awhile now?
Bullshit, disabling that service reduced my Unigine Valley benchmark by 10 points.
You can’t get perfect reproducible scores in benchmarks bro. A lot of factors come into play.
yup this boosts it for people who are CPU limited but otherwise no gain whatsoever.
Nvidia Streamer Service definitely is used for the Shield, but I wonder if it’s also possibly used for streaming the video feed to services like Twitch (as that’s a built-in option, iirc).
People mention that Shadowplay still works, but there’s 2 pieces to Shadowplay, 1 is recording your session, the other is broadcasting that recording. So I wonder if the broadcasting piece is broken by shutting off the Streamer service.
Either way, I use the Streamer Service to game from my Shield, so it’s definitely staying on for me 🙂
While I roll with my shield tablet all day (Its an amazing android tablet btw), I would much rather have that performance on my pcvgames when I get home lol
Maybe they could enable the service after an hour of system idling so the user does not deal w the impact.
