Dawn Engine – First Screenshots Revealed Showcasing AMD’s TressFX 3.0

At this year’s GDC, AMD and Square Enix showcased Dawn Engine; the new engine that will be powering the next part of the Deus Ex series. The slides from that GDC session has just been posted online and below you can view the first tech images from Dawn Engine, showcasing AMD’s TressFX 3.0 technology (the fourth images does not seem to be from Dawn Engine, though we decided to include as it shows off TressFX 3.0’s new Fur support). Enjoy!

  1. This does look quite good, Now just have to see it in action and how the hair strands move about when a character is in motion.

      1. They most likely will. It will almost certainly be in the next Tomb Raider, though maybe not as advanced as it will be on PC.

  2. hair is one thing, hopefully they have better models generally, DX;HR had a very mixed bag of graphical presentation

  3. Hmm The Bear is From New Tomb Raider 😀
He He 2x Awesome Games tis Year -> DeusEx + TombRaider and StarWars BF all with full GCN Utilisation

      1. You best hope it will be like Battlefield. That would sure beat the previous version they showed (no, not the old one with space combat), I remember a lot of iron sights, slow movement and slow vehicles on a map that looked small.

        1. So the storytelling goes.. but.. “We have the technology. We can re-build him” is not too far fetched even here.

        2. Also, there might be pockets in the mainline story which haven’t been told. We don’t know where Jensen went or what he did in many places. Only the spot where he shows up on the cargo ship in the Missing Link DLC. We know very little of his ex-PD time and the time leading up to the prologue of DX:HR.
But as I said in my prior comment.. Don’t be surprised if he somehow makes a cameo. It is the cyberpunk future after all, and Adam was already salvaged once.
The Half-Life 2 and Call of Duty series give you the impression your character died for a moment or a prolonged period of time, even though it might not be that way. Just a thought.

    1. maybe other studios and engines because you wont see many Trees and grass in a Deus Ex game to begin with .
      the hair looks majestic lol

  4. Hopefully this tech looks more realistic. Looked truly bizarre in Tomb Raider 2013. Even when she was in doors with no breeze whatsoever her hair was alive like Medusa lol. Just makes no sense and defeats the whole point of “realistic” hair physics.

    1. Perhaps they’ll solve that problem with this new version. Stuff takes time. Tomb Raider didn’t have the biggest budget, either.

        1. It depends on how they spent it. Not all $100m games are created equal. Star Citizen is doing an order of magnitude more with their paltry $75m.

  5. It looks great…the good thing is that this can also work with NVidia GPU´s. I need to upgrade my GTX560Ti OC 1GB and if AMD do things right with the R390X…I’ll be sure changing for a while to the red team.

  6. It’s pretty amazing how much hair adds to the believability of CG characters. Maybe hair will be the next lens flare.

Maybe with DX12 we’ll get great hair for free, with little to no performance hit.

  7. TressFX = tombraider
    TressFX 2 = Tombraider
TressFX 3 = Rise of the Tombraider ? they should rename it to TombFX or LaraFX or FX rider. don’t get me wrong, i liked it, i like all sorts of physics and physx and TressFx and these kinds of stuff more than anything else in games visuals

    1. New versions of TressFX coming too fast to be applied to big no. of games. Though v3 should come up in huge no. of titles than both previous versions. TressFX 1.0 very very demanding due lack of advanced LOD that has been implemented in v2 and boost performance significantly.
Also Square Enix works with TressFX for some time now so we can expect they will use it in more titles than DE and TR. And if you would run DE HR you’d see that game lacks anything that could be even call hair, especially on main character!

  8. Meh make hair look real bearly move and spend the extra processing power on la noire like facial animations. Thanks.

  9. That’s it? The damn hair? I doubt that the hair is the most impressive part of the new engine? I mean come on, I’m so hyped when i heard that they’ll make a new Deus Ex with a new engine and all they show was an AMD Feature promo? The rest of the engine better be good, even though i love Human Revolution i gotta admit that even back then the graphics was pretty bad, especially the character models.

  10. TressFX is huge waste of processing power in my book. In the whole game, only Lara had it, it doesn’t even react properly to weather and uses to much GPU power for something that’s sooooooo cosmetic.
