Source 2 Engine Officially Announced, Available for Free to Content Developers

During this year’s GDC, Valve has officially unveiled Source 2 Engine. Although the company did not reveal any noteworthy new title (like, you know… Half Life 3 or Left4Dead 3), it stated – via a press release – that the engine will be available for free to all content developers.

Valve’s Jay Stelly said:

“The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favourite games. We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers. This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PCs dominance as the premiere content authoring platform.”

In addition, Valve announced Steam Link; a new device that allows streaming from any PC or Steam Machine at 1080p and 60H. Steam Link will be priced at $49.99.

Furthermore, the Steam Controller will also be available alongside Steam Link, and will also be priced at $49.99.

Both Steam Link and Steam Controller are planned for a November release.

  1. Im really looking forward to trying out Source 2. Im not sure what to make of this Steam Link though as we can already stream from one PC to any windows device, im not sure where Steam Link fits in.

    1. It takes resources to stream your content in the internet. People are either using another PC or a capture card. Steam Link is that kind of device.

        1. I did a little bit of digging, and it seems like I was wrong. From what I understand, you need to connect this to your TV, and it will detect the streaming signal from your PC by WiFi.

Basically it’s for those people who already have a modern PC, and don’t want to spend money on a Steam Machine.

It has three USB ports for input devices and HDMI out.

          1. Thats even better, I might actually get one for my TV upstairs since its so cheap too.

  2. I hope this new engine will be able to add some animation variety to the game’s environment. I’ve had enough with source’s static environment. Dying light is the only recent game who managed to make their world actually look alive.

    1. “only recent game who managed to make their world actually look alive”
Please tell me that was a joke.

      1. It’s the only recent game that I’ve bought and played that once in a while makes me stop playing and appreciate it’s scenery. Who knew that something as simple as wind could make a game environment looks much more alive. I’m sure there’s a lot of other good recent games out there, its just that i haven’t had the chance to play em.

  3. Yeah they have said that in the past, the goal is to get people to make their own games, to make steam a user created content selling platform.

    I still want hl3.

      1. Underhell mod is genius…and that guy making episode 3 mod.

Valve doesnt have to do any work.

  4. Valve declared their intention to take over the industry and are succeeding with the shock and awe they are creating at GDC

  5. All i want is.. Half life 3 and the new VR set. I’m a bit afraid for my eyes tho. What if i game for 4-5 hours a day with it? Won’t that make my eyes too dry? Wont that screw up my vision?
