Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – E3 2013 vs Gamescom 2014 Demo Comparison

YouTube’s ‘GamePREMIERE’ has shared a side-by-side comparison of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s E3 2013 and Gamescom 2014 demos. The thing you will notice immediately is that the TOD (Time Of Day) is different. Distant objects also look better in the E3 2013 demo, though this may be due to a DOF filter. There is also noticeable pop-in on both demos, though it seems that the LOD values are lower on the Gamescom 2014 demo. Enjoy the comparison video below and share your thoughts!

    1. Indeed. I am kinda shocked because I never would of imagined a 50 series card from Nvidia for example say like a 750/750ti performs better then new consoles. Even on my 750ti I was shocked how much it destroyed Xbox1 in Titanfall as well as my friends PS4 in BF4. Just insane how weak the new consoles are.

      1. Yeah every games seems to be getting the downgrade treatment huh!
That F*CKN ugly p*ss filter all over every damn game.

F*CK, cant wait until every damn console is dead and burried, the sooner the better!

      2. it is a question, are the consoles weak because they are based on amd laptop and tablet hardware or have the pc hardware advanced further than cosnoles?

        Seems like both to me.

    2. GS2014 has more terain details in the distance in this picture, especially tress on the left (theres even WHOLE NEW MOUNTAIN IN THE DISTANCE in GS2014). Besides that it looks like it’s only time of day change IMHO, and that’s preference taste for everyone. I know you guys want’s to see downgrade in everything :P, but it doesnt look like one to me 🙂 (at least in your comparison pictures)

      1. Funny isn’t it how people say the time of day has changed in later shots, a lot of games mysteriously change this but it’s not, it’s post processing and cheaper lighting, just like Infamous SS trick. E3 videos are never shown the same place same in later shows, they know comparisons can be made because they’ve downgraded since E3.

        1. Based on your comparison shots, there’s no downgrade, period. Whats more GTC2014 looks better, there’s much more trees and varius decorations in the distance (“horse shading” is better, and there’s even whole new moutain in the distance visible now:). For now my opinion is, “it’s only TIME OF DAY CHANGE” (not to mention I like new time of day more :), but as always we will see how final version will look like (theres always time for downgrade, unfortunately).

BTW Watch Dogs looks like trash during “sunny” weather, gta 4 also looks worse compared to cloudy weather, so just TIME OF DAY can influence graphics perceptiona a lot, no doubt about it.

          1. These “missing” objects in the distance (in this croped picture), are not on the same place anymore, so your comparision is useless at best. It’s not the same mountain anymore!! 🙂 Just open your original comparision images (before you croped them), and pay attention how mountains looks now compared to 2013 build. That croped area is totally reshaped now, theres totally new mountain there, thats why you cant see trees (because they added few new mountains). So 2013 build is the one, with missing details!! 🙂 even at close range (rocks, trees). 2014 build is far superior, no doubts about it, and because of that issue this DSOG article is almost BAD JOKE TO ME. I HATE CONSOLE FANBOYS, BUT ALSO PC FANBOYS. Before I liked DSOG because I thought it was all about PC enthusiasts, but not only about BLINDED PC FANBOYS, WHO SEE DOWNGRADES EVERYWHERE, WHILE GAME IS OBVIOUSLY BETTER NOW.

          2. Claim down FFS, you maybe convinced but me and others are not because it’s been done may times in E3 presentations. Also, it is the same mountain in the same f*cking place.

This has go nothing to do with console or PC, it’s a simple observation of the differences, the LOD looks a lot less in the 2014 shot on the hill and less detailed rocks.

          3. “Based on your comparison shots, there’s no downgrade,”

Think you need glasses, no matter what Time of day, it still looks worse than 2013.Can you not see that filters have applied reducing quality?

“TIME OF DAY can influence graphics perception a lot,”

True, but only if the devs do don’t actaully know how to achieve a proper Sunny and vibrant atmosphere which is what MGSV E3 2013 was doing right.

I mean does a real life sunny day look crap?

          4. I’m not wearing glasses, and my vision is extremely good (20/16, so my vision is much better, than already very good vision 20/20). But thanks man for your concern

“”Can you not see that filters have applied reducing quality?””

That comparision shots are one blury mess (probably pictures were taken from compressed and low quality YT video), so I will not discuss image quality right now.

“”it still looks worse than 2013.””

So if it looks worse, than please post comparison, maybe you are right (right now I only wrote my opinion based on Sean comparison shots)

          5. “based on Sean comparison shots”

Same shots I’m comparing to and also aren’t blurry, but if you can see , the GDC’s shot’s LOD is much lower than 2013.

I’ll try and look for more comparisions but there is a definite downgrade, even with the alot of objects being remodeled or placed.

          6. Open these shots in new tab (in order to view them in full resolution). Sorry man, but picture quality is far from sharp, it looks like ugly YT quality.

“even with the alot of objects being remodeled or placed.”
On Sean comparision it clearly otherwise, that’s why (for now) I dont belive in any downgrades. Theres much more trees, and other various objects (even whole new mountain in the distance) in 2014 build. Also I noticed better “horse shading”, and more defined mountains (almost like theres no tesselation in old 2013 build). Just compare mountain on the left, it looks very bad in 2013 build 🙁

          7. I cropped out the middle section in the screenshots and you can clearly see that 2014 have much less detail(waiting for that to be authorised here). They’re from the video so it’s not great quality but still.

Also, if it was a different time of day, the shadows wouldn’t cast in the same direction.

          8. Man are you kidding me ?!! Shadows in your comparision arnt casting in the same direction, look on this rock wall on the left, in 2014 build whole “rock wall” is self shadowed, but not in 2013 build. So it’s definitely not the same time of day (not to mention there’s clouds on the sky).

          9. Right now I’m talking just about your comparision, and shadows arnt casting in the same direction there (rock wall on the left), it’s different time of day for 100%.

          10. My comparisons don’t show the horse shadows because the shot has been cropped from the video. The horse shadows cast in the same direction as the so claimed different time of day.

          11. “Theres much more trees, and other various objects (even whole new mountain in the distance).”

That I agree, but still the LOD seems lower now, if you look at 2013 you can still see the buildings clearly.

As for the horses they look a little shiny but look at the cliffs of 2013 they are much more detailed.

“Just compare mountain on the left, it looks very bad in 2013 build”

Yes they do look much more detailed now than before , but that new tint really takes away so much colour everything looks much more dull.

Don;t think there’s much more we can argue from two pics now can we, lol.

    3. They didn’t trade anything , it’s on a different time the first pic is morning the second is idk

But yes there was a downgrade , watch the video the ground on 2;17 – in GC14 they made it flat along with the rocks like a skybox compared to E3 2013 in which the ground was okay and the rocks were big , were not glued into the ground.

      1. We’ll see if the day actually looks like that because it’s a common thing to do at presentations to downgrade the lighting and show an evening or morning same shot rather than showing the same shot from 2013.

      1. This sort of thing has been done before, passing off time of day changes when really it’s lighting downgrades and post processing filter instead of natural lighting.

    4. hey, lets not lose hope until it gets released on PC, maybe it will look same as e3 or maybe we can mod it somehow.

  1. Hmm…
Lets hope the PC version maintains the quality and detail of the 2013 build. And by maintain I actually mean do better than both in the final version…

    1. Actually, not me atleast but we cling on and hoping heh. Time to see things for what they are, we are in for a hell of an ugly games the whole time these p*iss poor consoles are around :/

  2. look at the ground no rock in GC build and E3 color looks better to the eyes we had enough with this shity light we see it in every game

  3. Kojima! Don’t you dare downgrade PC version just because of shitty Next gen consoles…. oops my lips slipped i mean Old Old -Gen Consoles… 😀

    1. Apparently he thins ps4 is amazing and will make impossible things possible. The game is alraedy 1080p 60 fps on ps4, better be so on pc.

  4. BTW, those that say it’s the time of day. It’s not time of day because the shadow casting direction is exactly the same on both videos. Different time of day results in different shadow direction because the Earth moves around the Sun. So basically we assume that then they made the Sun cast shadows in the same direction as the 2013 video while it was day time.

Sorry but I don’t buy it because we’ve seen this before in E3 games, where the time of day supposedly looks different when it’s really a lighting downgrade and added cheap post processing.

  5. You missed all the trees in the middle and who says the mountains are tessellated? They just changed it around. And what 10 trees? Wow big deal ,there is more in the middle of the shot in the 2013 shot.

    1. I know theres no trees in the middle, but I didnt missed them. My red line ilustrates mountain edges in 2014 build, and because mountains are reshapred now, it’s perfectly understandable why they removed frew tress in the middle (theres red line there in 2013 build). Even if that few trees were removed on purpuse to gain performance(but I’m 100% sure, it’s not the case here), still 2014 has more additional details (trees and new mountains in the end, so speaking about downgrade is not that easy. And yes, in 2014 mountains are clearly tesselated, in 2013 mountain edges are rough, not that smooth, not to mention there are much less detailed.

Game looks better now, at least in your comparision. Thats my opinion, and you think whetever you want.

      1. I didn’t ask for your opinion, yet you still avoid the question about the horse shadows being in the same direction at different times of day. I also said nothing about downgrading in my original post.

If I asked for everyone opinion we’d be here all day, some people like crap lighting, doesn’t make it better, it’s just what they’re used to. The whole point of the post is to say that I’m not convinced it’s a time of day that make it look worse.

        1. You cant ingore landscape shadows, and these are much different (in 2014 build whole rock wall on the left is selfshadowed, while in 2013 is entirely exposed to the sun). Even John wrote in this news desctiption, that TOD is different in new build and I agree with him on this (hell theres even clouds on the sky in 2014 build). But we dont have to argue on this now, MGS5 will come out, and there will be no doubts about TOD use in this particular scene (and we will inspect real downgrades).

“I didn’t ask for your opinion”
Its not your site, so I can speek my opinions whetever I want, I dont need to ask your permission for that.
