During this year’s SIGGRAPH, Crytek’s Nicolas Schulz and Theodor Mader finally admitted how much more powerful high-end PCs were compared to both current-gen consoles at launch. Obviously this isn’t surprising at all, but it’s at least good to see developers admitting what we already knew.
As Crytek’s Rendering Engineers revealed, when both Xbox One and PS4 were already dated the moment they came out.
“Console hardware was considerably less powerful than high-end PCs at launch” reads Crytek’s SIGGRAPH 2014 presentation.
Crytek’s engineers claimed that Crysis 3 at Ultra settings is already an impressive looking game, and that adding just more (effects, higher resolution, etc.) is not an option on weaker hardware, which basically explains why Ryse was running at 900p with 30fps on Xbox One.
Furthermore, Crytek said that MSAA was not an option on Xbox One with deferred lighting as there was a massive bandwidth increase. Also, the company run into issues with ESRAM size, something that prevented it from using MSAA (especially since 2X MSAA did not provide great IQ).
Last but not least, Crytek’s engineers revealed that SSAA was used in pre-recorded cut-scenes in Ryse, and that this demanding AA technique will be available in the PC version of Ryse.

I thought Ryse was outstanding on the Xbone, but i really can’t wait to be blown away how it will run on my rig! I for one think it is good for the consoles to be more popular and less powerful. Why? In my mind, it makes developers learn new ways of doing thing to be more efficient without sacrificing quality. This doesn’t always work, mind you lol, butI think it helps keep them honest.

The difference is that pc gamers can build for $400-$500, get much cheaper games, and not have to pay a monthly service to get such high end graphics. In the 90s, you had no such choice to spend less money to get better performance.

Consoles have a few dozen exclusives, while PC has thousands. Not to mention entirely exclusive genres like MOBAs, RtSs, and MMOs. Plus PCs can also use emulators to play games from older consoles, and can use any controller from any modern console to play games. Is it really worth paying more for a few exclusives, limited genres, limited controllers, and worse performance via a consol when you can pay less for a PC to get thousands of games, use any controller, get every genre, have great performance, and be productive with non-gaming things? To me, the answer is no.

Your response is completely moronic. First, when you talk about exclusives, you mention exclusives from Nintendo and then from Sony. Am I to assume that means in order to not miss out you purchase every single console that is released?
Second, your definition of RTS and MMO games must be pretty loose because I don’t see even if they released Company of Heroes 2 or a similar game on console how you’d be able to control it with a console controller.
Third, your argument about controllers is null and void. You can use ANY MODERN CONTROLLER you want on computer. And as far as you putting down the keyboard/mouse as a controller; if you used a controller and I used a keyboard/mouse, you would get your butt kicked repeatedly in most games.
Fourth, PC gaming just costs less overall and that’s a fact. If I spent a little more for a much more fuel efficient car, then overall, it would be more wise to get the more fuel efficient car because of fuel costs. PC gaming is the same. Although you might spend a little more (maybe $600 for a good gaming PC) you will spend vastly less amounts of money on games and by not paying for Xbox Gold / Playstation Network all the time.
Fifth, you completely contradict yourself with your last statement. Everyone has to have a PC. Spend the money you would on a crappy PC + spend the money you would on a severely gimped console and now you have a great gaming PC.
I used to be a console gamer, until I just couldn’t stand the training wheels any more and now I exclusively game on PC. The only gamers that don’t use PC are people that really haven’t given it a chance. That’s because there is NO COMPARISON between the two.

They are now dedicated media machines, with gaming as a sub thing, proven by they not putting very good hardware into it, something both MS and Sony did with their last generation. They (especially the Xbox 360, the PS3 was a bit outdated the year later it released) had amazing hardware for the time they released.Microsoft is becoming a bit better at this tho, getting up to the level of the PS3 and Xbox 360. Currently they are much better media machines.

PC’s can use any controller they want, even XBOX One and PS4 controllers, if I remember correctly. Also, keyboard/mouse > controller. Once, Microsoft tried to implement cross-platform gaming between PC’s and XBOX. This is what happened: “Problems quickly arose in testing, however, when Microsoft found that

I think there was one specific (and now highly coveted) LG DVD drive that could read Wii and GC disks, but that generally doesn’t work (apparently Nintendo uses some custom disk encoding or somesuch).
This entire exclusives debate is stupid. Why do console gamers feel it is ok to group PS4 and XB1 together and say “we have more/better exclusives”.
Most console gamers have ONE console, either a PS4 or an XB1. Most exclusives are exclusive to a particular console. Being a console gamer allows most people access to only a handful of exclusives.
When you argue “but but but…. the exclusives” you are arguing against yourself. By buying only one console you are not allowing yourself access to a lot of exclusives.
PC has more exclusives than you could play in your lifetime. LoL and Dota 2 are two PC exclusives that have an insane amount of players.
LoL has 27 million daily players, that is more than the population of Australia. You can argue that you do not like LoL, but that has no bearing on this argument. The fact is, LoL is the most successful and popular game of all time… and it is a PC exclusive.
When it comes to exclusives, PC has the best exclusives. This is not an objective judgement by me. It is a judgement made by 27 million people who play the game daily.

When a Game goes on a Steam Sale, its sales skyrocket. People that otherwise would have not tried it, or not bought the Game at all (since that means they don’t consider the Game worth paying for at full price), would never have paid ANYTHING for it (regardless of if they Downloaded it or not), & the Developer would have lost out on Sales from the Sequels too.
Also – 399 vs 400. You’re seriously going to argue about a 1$ difference? Alright then, let me just point out how 90% of Console Games are more expensive than their PC Counterparts. Let me point out how Console Royalties was one of the major Publisher Whinepoints about “Why We Need to Raise the MSRP to 60$ with the PS3/X360 Generation.” Did you know that Steam actually takes a smaller cut than Sony & Microsoft do with their Royalties? Not to mention that Steam has no physical item costs (CDs, Manuals, etc.) which cut into Console profits.
Overall, Consoles sell more copies, but on a per-copy basis, PC earns more money.

GTX 750ti. Consumes 60 watts at load. I have the EVGA SC edition. Ran it at 60fps 1080P on Ultra (I had to turn one setting down to very high to get it at a steady 60fps) with a dual core i3 4150. I paid about $500 for my PC. I recently bought Bioshock 1,2 and Infinite for $9 on Steam. I also ended getting Metro 2033 and Last Light for $6 in a pack.
You simply will NEVER see those prices on console. My PC is also upgradeable. I am purchasing Intel’s Broadwell chip when it’s released, which will be compatible with my H97 chipset. My cheapie 750ti is a placeholder for Nvidia’s next ultra low power consumption Maxwell cards come out.
I have all of this running in a tiny, beautiful mini ITX case and hooked up to a monitor and also a wall mounted television when I feel like gaming on the couch with my wireless controller.
I think more than ever, buying a console is getting to be the most ridiculous decision one can make. SSDs, graphics cards, and other hardware that are much more powerful are now on the market for the same price. This wasn’t the case when the PS3 and Xbox 360 came out…it took much longer to buy PC equivalent hardware at the equivalent price.
In a year from now, a $150 video card will absolutely destroy what a console can do. Right now, a $150 card is on par with it and already outperforms it. Heck, a mid-range GTX 570 from 2010 outperforms a PS4..

I didn’t say Ultra graphics at 60fps 1080p. You are correct, in that running games at such frame rates and graphics requires a bit more, but not that much more. $600-$800 is a fair judgement for that. HOWEVER, you are able to build a PC that can run on high/ultra graphics with more than 30fps at 1080p, which is better than any console. PC does cost more upfront, but when you never have to buy full price games with regular Steam sales, and don’t have to pay for multiplayer access, PC pays for itself very quickly. Saving $5 a month from the monthly subscription is $60 for a year, then paying at least $20 cheaper for ten games, comes out to be $260. And that’s just for a single year, and just ten games. Chances are you’re going to buy more than ten games and play longer than just a year. Now, take the $400 price of a console, add $260. You get $660, which is a comfortable amount to build a PC with. PC saves money in the long run, which is why PC gaming is cheaper.
Yet that is what Sony and their drooling lickspittles are claiming is the most important thing this generation.

Tlou is the most wonderful game ever. The story is so good it’s comparable to high class novels and books like the harry potter and lord of the rings series. Heck, the story is even deeper then game of thrones or the hunger games.

Real gamers have a PC to game on (Civ: Beyond Earth) and a Console to play the latest and greatest (Destiny, Bloodborne, Mario Kart)…. if you are just a PC gamer, that’s your problem.
It’s not a problem, I gave up consoles over 10 years ago to game on PC excursively and never looked back. My last console was a Gamecube, I don’t care for console exclusives and Mario, Zelda any more, as I said, moved on from that over 10 years ago.

PC has distinct advantages that a console does not have and I honestly can not really think of any disadvantages to a PC when it comes to a console comparison.
We can play the majority of Nintendo games on our PC’s via emulator. However as far as PCMR members are concerned, Nintendo products are okay with us since they’re not lying to people.
There are advantages on all sides of gaming. Will you be able to play Uncharted 4, Bloodbourne or Halo 5 on your PC? Now, you may say that you have no interest in those games but ultimately it comes down to YOU CANNOT play those games on your PC or countless other AAA/POPULAR/FUN/ENTERTAINING/EXCLUSIVE/MULTI-CONSOLE games in general…simply because you have drawn a stupid line in the sand. Will your enthusiast build cost less to operate (including utility bills)? Can you game on your GTX Titan or your 1440p monitor on your train ride to work like you can on a tablet or phone? Is your PC experience as simple or easy as the console experience? Will you have to go into a graphics menu and manually adjust a bunch of sh1t to get your game to look it’s best?
As much as you would like to deny it, there are advantages to be found on every platform. As it would pertain to gaming, there is no one platform to rule them all simply because different people have different gaming needs at different times. PCs have their place just as much as the other platforms.
Can you play your console on your 50″ 1080p TV on the train? And you can with a PC, get the Nvidia Shield Tablet. Problem solved.

Playing video games casually on a console doesn’t make you a gamer, it just means you play games casually. Playing football at the park with my friends doesn’t make me a footballer, driving bumper karts doesn’t make me a racecar driver, playing guitar hero doesn’t make me a musician.

Hardcore and casual are designations that transcend platform and genre. A hardcore gamer is hardcore regardless of where he or she may play. PC is no more hardcore than consoles. Street Fighter is no more hardcore than Diablo, BF, DOTA, HALO, Madden, COD, Destiny et al. Hardcore is not defined by FPS, effects or pixel count my friend.
Gamers simply play games. Maybe one day you and your friends will understand that.
If I spent a majority of my time gaming, I’d probably want them to look the most visually stunning/perform the best. A true gamer would buy a PC and spend far less on games. I started PC gaming in 2012 because I was playing Skyrim on my Xbox 360 non-stop. My friend invited me over and showed me how he was progressing in the game. I couldn’t believe it…It was so smooth it was surreal. It looked 100 times better. I decided to built a PC based on that five minutes of gameplay. I built one because I couldn’t restrict myself from that level of realism and improvement over what I was spending many hours on.
Console gamers aren’t stupid. They simply haven’t experienced the glory yet. I still consider them gamers…they’re just simply unenlightened gamers.

Because a AAA exclusive title usually is. Publishers don’t spend tens of millions of dollars developing and marketing a game because they don’t think gamers will like it.
The same certainly can’t be said for AAA Multi-platform titles that typically hit PC. These are just the proven console franchises that are being played out and have reached PC for additional sales opportunity. Look at all the Multi-Plat AAA titles (like AC for example), most started on console and hit PC after their sales success.

Playing on console for me was like trying to enjoy the feeling of racing, on a circuit, with a 60hp family car, no manual stick, with handlebar instead of a steering wheel….. right after I’ve driven a beautiful sports car.
Not saying consoles aren’t good for people who enjoy playing on them, but at least I and probably for some others as well, couldn’t care less about the games if we cannot enjoy the full experience or I cannot tweak it to our liking. . That’s why I don’t miss RDR (bought it and play some of it on a friend’s console), TLOS and so on. On PC I might give them a chance, just like GTA 5, but other than that, I don’t really feel I’ve missed anything.

It doesn’t matter how the game sells. There are truly unique first party Sony exclusives that you can’t label as AAA movie trash. Pretty much everything that is developed by Naught Dog is first class, Gran Tourismo is a super racing simulator, Japan Studio’s Shadow of Colossus is still one of my favorite games plus there’s a lot of indie/experimental stuff like Journey, SoundShapes etc. Sony’s first party portfolio is very diverse and contains tons of top quality titles. PS4 is still very young and there are potentially great titles in the pipeline. Such games are a reason enough to own a console.

The PS3 has some great Exclusives, regardless of Framerate & Resolution, though I am pleased I held off on buying MGS V on PS, as I would much rather buy it on PC.

I was going to post a 1080p screen of Star Citizen but it is too big a file to post on this discussion board. All you need to know is that Star Citizen is the best looking game right now and it isn’t even done yet. Also, while you are struggling to get 1080p/60fps on your console, both of those are becoming things of the past on PC.

1080p/60fps is attainable in most games on a $400 PC. My PC was quite a bit more than $400 but that is really just another advantage of PC. If you have the money and want to game at 1440p/144fps like I do you can. All in all my PC was about $4000 but it does more than 10 times more than a console can. My PC destroys any game at 1440p. My PC also a media server. My PC has 24 TB of mechanical HDD storage and a 1TB SSD. My PC has 32GB of RAM. I definitely got more bang for my buck than any console could offer.

As for the titan not running the game in 60 fps? Needless to say the consle versions dont have SSAA at all Let alone x5 that pc has.

It reads like a “everything wrong with Xbox One article” yet they did this interview while collecting an award for best in game graphics. It cant be all that bad.
Not to mention Ryse was a launch title….. before the spec were finalized, before the new sdks, before the GPU reserve as open, before DX12 and the game is the only game whos graphics has really impressed me so far. Sure there are other game pretty games and some good looking stuff out there like the particle effect in Infamous SS and some of the texturing and light in Killzone but as far as I am looking at this and just in awe RYSE is the only one so far.

When new hardware comes out the old hardware gets a price cut and the better performing hardware takes up the original price point. We’re free to continue on with the lower specs at a reduced price or take up the better performing part at the original price point. Price cuts aren’t exclusive to consoles.
We pay for our OS because it provides more utility for us than just allowing us to launch or buy games. PC users get a lot of value out of one device. Consoles only do one thing, and they’re not particularly good at that this generation either.
The vast majority of PC users prefer mouse and keyboard, but if we want a controller we’ll just go and buy one. Microsoft, Sony, or third party. It doesn’t matter. It’s no different than a console player buying a second controller.
I agree somewhat. I just like hitting a button on the controller and getting my game on. Also, I don’t have to toy with the settings like you do with PC. A console has one setting. I like a mouse and keyboard at times. But when I play Titanfall on PC, I kill tons of people and Titians. Everyone complains that I’m cheating by using the controller. I would choose my PC over my consoles any day. I use it for a lot of things.
I’m just trying to explain that you get a lot of bang for your buck by getting a console. At first anyway. I got lucky. I built my PC for 625.00. A lot of people have to spend more for a PC near the ability of the PS4.
PC guys get Upgrade fever. I have a R9 280x, and a lot of people say my graphics are weak. I max out 95% of games with my setup at 1080p.

Damage control for what console users though was so powerful and ended up matching a 2 year old mid-range PC spec. They simply have no clue, using old ideas about how consoles work because they don’t know anything about x86 and that consoles don’t use exotic custom hardware any more.
PS4 and XB1 are only cheaper because of their cheap X86 hardware, not because console users want cheap. If the PS4 and Xb1 were £600, people would still buy it.

Sony and Microsoft screwed up in this generation. It would have been wiser for them to keep a newer refined version of the Power PC based CPU (These are much more powerful than the 86 based ones in they are currently using), USE a much newer higher end GPU, then to make game development quicker, add something like a Tegra 4 processor (or one in the PS Vita) and support android style games. Consoles would have been much more powerful, fully backward compatible, and offered the possibility of a huge amount of Arm based games that could have been quickly ported to the system/s. All they did is give us lower powered higher priced crap, and pissed off IBM and Nvidia in the process.

Much of the commentary and banter from the PC side promotes otherwise and has been unnecessarily derisive and antagonistic.

No, not to each their own at least in this case. You’re trying to make light of the situation. The publishers and devs are the reason we get shitty buggy games and terrible ports. Gaming back in the day was a grand thing. Programmers were a passionate bunch of people that made games for the love of it, not the money. Now look at how shit the industry is since consoles have had their spotlight. This is why I support a lot of indie devs. Console gamers usually don’t have legit reasons as to why they like or prefer consoles.

All I have to say is I have a high end PC and Xbox one, the reason I have a console is because I’m sick of buying PC games for them to have sudden frame rate drops , microstutter , occasional lag. Then spend hours adjusting config files and waiting for patches and so on. Then once I’ve got a game running OK, I’m then trying to turn up all the graphic settings to see what I can get away with without performance drops. So after 2 weeks of messing around I might start playing the game, and console ports like mass effect 3, no controller support.( no comment). So consoles are better for one reason and that is playing the game with no issues from day one, and I can’t even tinker if I wanted to.
There called game consoles for a reason because they do a job and do it perfectly.
Regardless of the 10% resolution loss.
And that should only bother you if your playing on a 65″ TV.
And please build a PC for $350 that can beat a console. And a controller you will have to buy extra. And HDMI cable which comes with console.
