Modder SonicB00M has spent over a year working on a new version of his RE: ENHANCE mod for Resident Evil 2. Today, he finally released Version 2.0, which brings big visual upgrades and major improvements to all the pre-rendered backgrounds.
As the modder noted, all the backgrounds look sharper and more detailed than ever. Moreover, countless small elements (like posters, signs, notice boards, and subtle wallpaper patterns) have been painstakingly recreated by hand and seamlessly integrated into the scenes.
SonicB00M has also redone the inventory and file icons. Furthermore, he improved many 3D models and door textures. Plus, there are newly upscaled effects for smoke, blood, fire, and more.
If you have the GOG version of Resident Evil 2, you can download this version of the mod. This is the easiest way to play RE2 with the RE: ENHANCE Mod. If, on the other hand, you already have the Seamless HD Project with the Classic Rebirth Patch installed, you can use this version.
It’s also worth noting that SonicB00M has released a mod that upscales all of the game’s FMV cutscenes. This mod is compatible with RE: ENHANCE. So, make sure to use both of them for the ultimate RE2 experience.
To showcase the newly improved backgrounds, the modder shared these three screenshots. These images will give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect from it. And, I have to admit. Resident Evil 2 never looked as sharp and detailed as it does with this mod. So, kudos to the modder for making the game look so good.
In case you’re wondering, yes. There are similar mods for both Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 3. However, these two mods have not been updated to Version 2.0 yet. Right now, the only one that has the new upgrades is the Resident Evil 2 mod. Once SonicB00M releases new versions for the other two games, I’ll make sure to let you know.
Have fun, everyone!

I checked out an earlier version of the mod — it looked awful. In my opinion, 7th generation games are the only ones that 'look tolerable' with upscaled textures. For PS2 and earlier games, all you need is a good CRT filter.
I disagree its true that some are simple AI upscaled that looks mediocre but the ones that had work done to them looks glorious.
The OG is just more aesthetically pleasing. The downsampled AI slop is too distracting for me.
I tried a lot but majority CRT filters are torture for ur eyes on PS2 games and beyond, PS2 games look good upscaled to 1080p or above resolutions if u enable Anti blur in ps2 emulator and disable deinterlacing, for PS1 games with Duckstation, a light CRT filter like new pixie CRT with all effects to 0 can work but most of the CRT filters are absolute trash made to torture the eyes.
I use 'CRT Guest Advanced HD' for the PS2 and 'RC GDV NTSC PlayStation Clean' for the PS1. Both are available from ShaderGlass.
Looks awesome. I wonder if there's a way to update the models now.
At this point, you might as well play the remake.
There's even a mod to use fixed cameras, if you want a more "authentic" experience. (I find it much worse, personally)
Need to buy game ?!
