Voxel Duke Nukem 3D is a thing of beauty in its latest trailer

One of the best mods for the classic Doom games was the Voxel Mod. This mod replaced all of the game’s 2D sprites with 3D voxels. And, I’m happy to report that a similar mod will be available soon for Duke Nukem 3D.

Created by modder Cheello, Voxel Duke 3D offers one of the most faithful remastered experiences. The new 3D models retain the art style of the original sprites. They look so good that you might have trouble distinguishing them. The only way to fully admire them is by circle-strafing your opponents. When you do that, you won’t see rotating 2D sprites. Instead, you’ll enjoy the enemies in all their 3D voxel glory.

I cannot stress enough how amazing this mod is. Sadly, we don’t have an ETA on when the mod will come out. However, at the end of the article, you can find its latest trailer. So, make sure to watch it.

If you haven’t downloaded the Voxel Mods for Doom and Doom 2, I highly recommend doing so. They are among the best mods you’ll ever get for id Software’s classic shooters. The good news is that the Voxel Mod for Doom 2 is compatible with its Path Tracing mod. So, if you own a high-end RTX GPU, I highly recommend playing it. You can download the path-traced version here. Moreover, Voxel Mod is compatible with the Brutal Mod. So, if you are a fan of it, I suggest giving it a go.

Fans of DN3D should also check out Duke Nukem 3D: Savior of Babes. This is another must-have mod for the classic shooter. Then we have Duke Nukem 3D Legacy Edition. Duke Nukem 3D Legacy Edition is a gameplay mod that brings some balance changes, remixes a number of things, and makes the game harder.

Then we have Duke Nukem: Horror Castle. Duke Nukem: Horror Castle features 8 levels, 24 new enemies (including a new Boss), and 4 new enemies. Players can also expect shrinkable DN3D mini bosses, so that they can shrink them and stomp them. There are also new health and ammo items, as well as new effects.

I personally cannot wait to get my hands on Voxel Duke 3D. Ideally, I’d also like to see a Path Tracing Mod. From what I know, there isn’t one for it yet. Still, one of my best gaming experiences was playing the classic Doom games with these two mods. So, hopefully someone will start working on a Path Tracing Mod for Duke Nukem 3D.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

    1. That's the problem with a lot of these voxel mods. It's hard to tell the difference in videos. What you don't see is 2D sprites, and that's the point of this mod. Turn the 2D sprites into 3D voxels so that you don't have that immersion break when you realize that enemy you're shooting at or that ammo you're picking up is just a 2D image that's being rotated and animated by the game engine.

    2. they are hard to notice but if you look up and down while playing the voxels dont bend or rotate because they are not sprites.

  1. I actually managed to get RTX remix to correctly pathtrace Duke Nukem 3D using an old build of EDuke32.. I really hope when this comes out I can get these voxel models to work as well as that would look amazing.

  2. Nice I will have to check them out one day.. I miss Duke Nukem.

Would be cool if we could mod one of the newer Doom games even 2016's solely to get on an idTech engine.

Recognized this writers name John P. and always good stuff!

I'm surprised NightDive hasn't remastered any Duke Nukem games.. yet.
