DOOM The Dark Ages feature-1

Doom: The Dark Ages Hits PC on May 15th + PC Requirements

id Software has confirmed that Doom: The Dark Ages will be officially released on PC on May 15th. To celebrate this announcement, the team has shared a new trailer that you can find below.

Doom: The Dark Ages is the prequel to the critically acclaimed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. The prequel will tell an epic cinematic story of the Doom Slayer’s rage.

In this third installment of the modern Doom series, players will step into the blood-stained boots of the Doom Slayer, in this never-before-seen dark and sinister medieval war against Hell.

As we’ve already reported, Doom: The Dark Ages will support Full Ray Tracing/Path Tracing on PC. We can also expect it to support DLSS 4. As such, it will be interesting to test this game on the NVIDIA RTX 5090.

id Software has also revealed the game’s official PC system requirements. For gaming at 1080p/Low Settings with 60FPS, you’ll need an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7 10700K with 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 2060 SUPER or AMD RX 6600. Do note that like Indiana Jones, Doom: The Dark Ages will require GPUs that support hardware Ray Tracing. The game will also require 100GB of free disk space.

The devs recommend using an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or Intel Core i7 12700K with 32GB of RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD RX 6800. With this PC system, you’ll be able to game at 1440p/High Settings with 60FPS.

Finally, id Software did not reveal any PC requirements for the game’s Full Ray Tracing/Path Tracing. My guess is that NVIDIA will share them at a later date.

Before closing, it’s worth noting that the game is priced at 79.99 euros. So, following Dynasty Warriors: Origins example, this is another game that will cost you 80 euros to get. Ouch.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. yeah after the video i am excited for this. The visuals are darker than the previous game, strafing works again, seems to have large maps like serious sam and the music is just better than eternal. I wonder how big the game will be now since it looks to have hub like environments instead of open world and resources for upgrades. Gotta say though 10700k minimum with 8 cores and 16 threads and 12700k fore recommended with also 8 cores and 16 threads, seems to me the game is cpu bound due to all those enemies on screen. Rip 8gb card users. Cant wait for greedvidia to announce the 5060 at 8gb in april or may.

    1. also dual plasma gun and look at all those enemies, its a slaughter map now. Oh and the fact you can customize difficulty to your liking including speed and damage output is crazy, must be standard in all games, i know what i am gonna do, damage to the player, nearly max, damage to enemies, nearly max, so now every shot counts, no more bulletsponges. GENIUS.

      1. "no more bulletsponges" is a line that would make me buy so many more games. Bigger levels? Bigger world? More this? More that? F*k it, I want no more bulletsponges.

        1. i like bigger maps in the sense of nonlinear levels not open world, but yeah rpgfication of everything is terrible, i am so sick and tired of bulletsponge enemies.

        1. I feel like not having nvme by now is kinda insane. I upgraded to NVME back in 2020 and even then was a bit late to the party…

          1. Yes, but considering there is currently no other game with this requirement, even ratched and clan works ok on a SATA SSD, it makes me wonder what kind of revolutionary loading tech they have build in.
See, it’s not just about what is common to own, it’s about what did they do with the game to have it require very fast storage.
Or maybe, what did they not do ?
I can imagine it is ez to not optimize loading segments by using brute force, so that could also simply be it.

          1. RTX 3080 is around $1000 to $1500, $400 is for 3060ti. that 100$ CPU needs a 200$ mainboard also it's a 6core, game needs 8 minimum… +$2000 PC which is not midrange.

  2. This is more Gothic Quake I than Doom1 or doom'16

Can't they just reboot Quake with this same art style but abit grittier & with a new Gothic storyline ~all while being run on idtech 8

    1. They probably don't want to risk reviving a long-forgotten franchise without piggybacking on the popularity of the Doom brand.
When they announced The Elder Gods after the Phil Spencer Hexen t-shirt thing, I had the gut feeling that they'd make the storyline cross paths with Hexen at some point, in order to jumpstart a revival, but of course, I was disappointed.

      1. Who knows? Maybe they will?
They've got idTech 8 coming up … and they need a game to showcase it and I doubt it'd be another Doom and definitely not MG's next Wolfenstein (coz we still haven't got idtech 7 based Wolf).
I am speculating it'd be Quake or Heretic.
(Also I want another Soldier of Fortune with full gore, 🙂 )

    2. Two things:-
      1. Officially Quake is pretty much a de facto PvP arena shooter IP, as far I can tell.
      2. MachineGames had been rumoured to be doing a Quake reboot with a female protagonist.

I don't really believe no. 2. I doubt that a SP centric sequel would happen because of no. 1. Another Wolfenstein is more likely than a SP-based Quake, I reckon.

      1. MachineGames will work on Wolfenstein III (to tie off the trilogy) next. I think there is a Quake Champions but it is almost non-existent.

      2. 1. Quake became defacto PvP arena shooter IP after III:Arena. And yes, its trademark fast paced shooting mechancis resulted in that but let me tell you 1 thing: If its predecessor can be made into a new single-player IP after giving some thought in 2016, then Quake I can be made into something much better. This Dark Ages looks (nearly)-exactly like that, might not play like that tho. ( & Plz no Strogg-Quake tho … that'd be boring)
        2. MachineGames? Yes please. They already did the new expansions, 25 years later for the Quake Remaster. Female Protag? Hell No!!!!!!

    3. Quake 1 is, looks and plays like a man's game. Same with Doom II.

This is, looks and plays like a console game for teens… where enemies spawn and stand still to give you time to kill them, or move slowly and attack gently, and you do an intended combo while slowly jogging straight at them.

  3. The minimum req being 8 cores can't be right.

There's crap ton of people using 6 cores.

I'm guessing if you have a modern 6 core (Zen3 or better) you'd be fine. RIP 3600.

    1. Really glad I upgraded from 3600 to 7800x. Huge performance leap. I don't see myself upgrading for a long time.

  4. >mandated ray tracing again
This is so fuc king bul lshit. Stop forcing me to adopt and beta test early tech, f*k you bethesda.

    1. Ray tracing launched in 2018 with the RTX 2000 series. That's 7 years ago. It's not new. It's like complaining that PS5 games won't run on the PS4 released 7 years earlier. A GPU would need to be 4 generations old to have no chance of supporting RT. Time to move on/ditch the crappy laptop for gaming.

  5. In my old age I've come to really appreciate accessibility and the ability to customize your experience natively in a lot of these titles as of recent.

edit: i wonder how many people are gonna recognize mick gordon's absence.

    1. Don't care who does the music. In a story lite game such as this I'm usually listening to a podcast or a Youtube playlist in the background anyway. When I play a text heavy game I often disable the music outright even.

  6. woke dei hire garbage. the level progression and gameplay mechanics are nothing like the original games.

  7. LOL @ WAYPOINT MARKERS LIKE HALO. DOOM IS ABOUT MAZE LEVELS AND HUNTING FOR KEYS AND WEAPONS AND CAMMO AND HEALTH TO TRY TO ESCAPE A SCARY/ATMOSPHERIC ENVIRONMENT.

THIS IS ABOUT SHOOTING AND FOLLOWING A WAYPOINT MARKER CASUALTRASH THESE PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND DOOM THEY LOST THE PLOT AND IT WENT OVER THEIR HEAD 100% THE WRONG PEOPLE TRYING TO HANDLE THIS FRANCHISE THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.

          1. halo waypoint markers the game guiding your way and not focusing on action and horror is devolving.

  8. I love that we don't have to dash and dodge like a homosexual anymore but those orange, purple and green visual effects look very gay. That alone makes me stay away from this game.

      1. Of course the game will run on a Ryzen 5 7600X. But you will be CPU bottlenecked. The game is a massive upgrade from the previous two.

      2. It doesn't say that. 7600X will definitely stutter noticeably a lot because it simply doesn't have TWO more PHYSICAL CORES. The IPC uplift is there but it still won't be enough.

      3. Indiana Jones is the same engine right ? that runs pretty well on PC's lower than it's min specs. migth be the case in this one or not, F them regardless

        1. I think so. Also, Eternal runs with less than 40% CPU utilization on the 7600X. I don’t see it making that big of a jump that it would become CPU-limited.

  9. JOHN CARMACK AND JOHN ROMERO THE CREATOR OF DOOM EXPLAINING DOOM IS ABOUT HORROR AND ACTION AND ABOUT MONSTERS POPPING OUT OF DARKNESS AT YOU IN MAZE LIKE ENVIRONMENTS! THESE NEW DOOM ARENT ABOUT HORROR. THEY'RE ABOUT MINDLESS KILLING AND THE GAME DIRECTING YOU WHERE TO GO VIA WAYPOINT MARKERS LIKE HALO. THEY'RE MINDLESS SHOOTERS FAKE DOOM GAMES MINDLESS LIKE HALO.

  10. This is absolutely metal and mental. The reboot of the series should be started with this one instead. Looking forward to May 15!!!!

  11. doom3 is about darkness and lighting just like doom 1993 is about darkness and lighting its actually you posers who dont know any better trying to claim any of these new games are closer to the original game than doom 1993 its completely false. always run is a modfication to the game via source ports you were originally supposed to hold sprint button to run its why the running feels sloppy because its only meant to get you out of danger real quick it has sonic the hedgehog slide it was never meant to be played ''always running'' the only thing not found in original is reloading. doom on atari jaguar done by idsoftware you have to hold run button to run and the pc version was the same untill it was modded into the game. doom was never meant to be played ''fast paced'' hence why the running and controls feels sloppy running and the controls dont feel sloppy when you are walking it was a haunted house spooky game basically i played this sh*t in 1993 i know. if you are playing doom 1993 with ''always run option enabled and not holding down key to run the whole time this is not vanilla gameplay how game was shipped and meanted to be played in 1993 you are playing a modification just like freelook and crouch and jump. there is even nightvision goggles pick up in original doom. Also no. freelook/crouch/jump was a technology limitation at the time in 1993 tho, but requiring you to hold a button to run was a design choice and an option to ''always run without holding a button is a straight up modification/glitch found by community period.

  12. Release in May – give it 3-4 months before they grovel and make a big update about how you can now play the game with weaker GPUs. 8GB VRAM as a MINIMUM requirement is a non-starter. GPU prices have simply been too high for too long and people have stopped upgrading every other year like they used to. The Steam hardware surveys speak a clear language. PC gaming is NOT about high end any more. And id's attitude with this game is a huge blunder that will cost them dearly in sales, come May.

  13. John, you left out mentioning the inclusion of DenuvNO with this expensive game. I will probably get the game eventually, in a few years after they remove the cancer, since I refuse to pay for the "privilege" of being insulted by these sh*tty companies.

  14. Going from 400+ FPS in Eternal to less then 60 FPS on the same good rig to this one.
We are going to the dark ages indeed.
