Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 recent patch update has sparked a controversy among fans, prompting a review bomb on Steam. The patch, intended to increase difficulty in the game’s multiplayer Operations mode, has been met with widespread criticism for its artificial resource scarcity and class-limiting design.
Key Changes in the Recent Patch
The recent patch for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has introduced several changes to the game’s multiplayer Operations mode. The patch includes the addition of a new “Lethality” difficulty mode, which limits Ammo Crate refills per player and severely nerfs armor regeneration unless players stay close to each other. Furthermore, the Ruthless difficulty tier has been modified to include a unilateral 15% reduction in player armor. Additionally, certain boss-killing tactics have been nerfed, altering the gameplay dynamics.
Community Concerns for the Space Marine 2 Recent Patch Update
The changes in the Space Marine 2 recent patch update forces players to adopt a specific playstyle, restricting the flexibility that defines the gameplay of Space Marine 2, and this is one of the most primary concerns of the Space Marine 2 community. As one player on the game’s subreddit noted:
“Why are they forcing players to stay together? How would that work for a team of assault, vanguard and sniper?”
This sentiment is echoed by MrTactician, who went ahead to summarize the issue:
“In a PvE game, players HATE suddenly performing worse through no fault of their own; it simply doesn’t feel good. Please be careful with the next patch; I do not want another Helldivers catastrophe because the balance team feels that we are having fun in the wrong way.”
The comparison to Helldivers 2 is particularly relevant, as that game faced similar balance issues and community backlash. Arrowhead, the developer of Helldivers 2, struggled to find the right balance, and it took months of tweaks and updates to address player concerns. In the Space Marine 2 recent patch, the limited refills of the Ammo Crate and the reduced armor regeneration have been particularly contentious. Players feel that these changes create artificial difficulty, rather than organic challenges that arise from the design of the game. As one player with over 100 hours of gameplay noted on Steam:
“This mechanic is one of the most confusingly out-of-place approaches to increasing difficulty I have ever seen. It disregards the core pillars of the game’s combat flow and seems to have been implemented in a state of confusion where the developers forgot that certain classes are designed to be played at different ranges from each other.”
Fortunately, Saber Interactive has acknowledged the community’s concerns and promised to address them. Focus Entertainment, the game’s publisher, tweeted:
“We closely read your feedback regarding the latest patch… We’re actively working on another one including balancing fixes. It should release next week.”
This prompt response is encouraging, and the community awaits the upcoming patch with high hopes of their once loved Space Marine 2. Space Marine 2’s patch misstep highlights the challenges of balancing horde shooters. Saber Interactive must course-correct to avoid months of drama, as seen with Helldivers 2. With the game’s design centered around genetically-modified super soldiers, players expect to feel powerful, not constrained.
As the community waits for the next patch, it’s only natural for players to recognize the delicate balance between challenge and enjoyment. Horde shooters thrive on fast-paced action and strategic teamwork, not artificial obstacles. By listening to player feedback and adjusting their approach, Saber Interactive can restore the game’s past glory and deliver an experience worthy of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Editor In Chief’s Note: Patch 4.1, which addresses a lot of the issues discussed here, was released this Thursday. The game’s Recent Reviews are also “Mostly Positive”

my dude, joe biden is the president, the dude doesnt even know where he is half the time and he is not articulate, he has dementia and Alzheimers and he has fallen goin up the stairs 4 times. Also kamala makes no sense when she speaks.
The standards are quite low and the best thing about trump is who he is gonna hire elon musk and ron paul working in his administration to destroy the state is all i need. Most revolutionary thing ever.
"Shabbos goy A" vs "Shabbos goy B".
Doesn't matter. Nothing will change.
yup if at least he cuts down the state and regulations things will improve, the idea of elon musk and ron paul being the ones who take out the state is the most promising thing so far and if that fails, well i guess that means that both liberarianism and liberalism is dead and we end up in tribal warfare where everyone votes for their group interests since its the only thing left to do…then things will definitely change.
Elon Musk? You mean the guy that sent 25,000 American Jobs to Communist China where the largest Tesla plant in the world is located?
Pretty much all Tesla sold outside the US are made in Communist China using Communist Chinese labor instead of the USA using American Labor. Notice also that Elon never ever says anything bad about Communist China or Communist Chinese censorship. That's because they OWN HIM.
Is there a city in the US that couldn't use those 20,000 auto manufacturing jobs and the 5000 Management/support jobs? Elon doesn't give a rat's a*s about you or America or anything other than himself.
Get a frigging clue …….
in order to do that you gotta cut taxes and regulation and kamala wont do that. They literally went after him for not hiring immigrants when he cant hire people who might be spires of foreign nations, one law used against its each other. Solution, get rid of those regulations and taxes and then no one has any excuse for their failings.
No one cares about your US politics here, go to american site with your bs.
How many dumbass developers of PVE games have to repeat the same damn mistakes before someone learns the lesson? Comical honestly.
DON'T INCREASE DIFFICULTY MONTHS AFTER LAUNCH. DON'T MAKE MAJOR CHANGES TO BALANCE IN GENERAL IF PEOPLE ALREADY LIKE THE GAME. It's amazing how dense game developers can be. But that's what you get when you build an industry around feature factories where nobody gets to be a designer full time. You get all these tech-savvy or art-savvy people who can be really "productive", getting lots done, working long hours and such. And none of them are particularly good at game design. You let the intern tweak the balance, you patch it in without play-testing, hey, you're being "productive" right? You've got "velocity" lol
Meanwhile, CEO lays off thousands and get a 30 million dollar raise ( this actually happened last week at Microsoft)
The problem is that the devs listen to the hardcore 2-3% that lives for the game instead of the 97% that are happy with the game… and once the dev adds what the hardcore wants… well then its time to see who really paid the huge chunk of the money. Stupid devs keep listening to the same crowd, the clever ones understand their customer dynamics and who to listen too… and its not the few loudmouths.
to be fair you got a bunch of try hards who go on forums and say "THE GAME IS SO EASY, AHHAHAHA THIS IS IT, HOW PATHETIC FINISHED IT INT HE HIGHEST DIFFICULITY YOU ARE NOTHING GAME DEVS, HOW PATHETIC"
and devs listen to those clowns.
There's nothing wrong with adding a new difficulty setting for those people. It wouldn't interfere with anyone else's experience. And they did add a new difficulty setting, right? So they were 99% of the way to a good update, and then they jumped off a bridge onto the highway by making significant changes to lower difficulties. This is a completely unforced error. The "hardcore" wouldn't have complained about the lower difficulty once some "hardcore" mode was added.
What setting? They released a patch for the multiplayer part of the game.
Very nice seeing a new writer! The site could use some wider scope and takes on a variety of topics, so I hope it goes well!
Also, classic 2D Sub-Zero kicks as*.
REAL SPACE MARINES VOTE FOR TRUMP 2024!
More like Space Cadets …… RFK Jr is an excellent example of a Space Cadet
This game seemed to have a lot of good will. Why try and fix something that is not broke?
It always amuses me when people get mad at these types of patches. If the game released with these types of gameplay elements, no one would even bat an eye. But because they changed a pre-establised gameplay mechanic, everyone gets their torches and pitchforks. A tip for game devs, create the game so that everything is under performing, so that way any patches will be buffs and the community will be happy. People are a lot more receptive torwards buffs than nerfs, even if the nerfs are to bring the game more in line with the original vision.
I havent played SM2 but i still read this, Im torn on how Devs should approach these type of games/updates while keeping the Casual-Lifestyle players happy. its such a wire act, and someone will always be pissed.
