The debut trailer for Gears of War: E-Day turned a lot of heads. Microsoft noted in that trailer that everything we saw was in-engine footage. However, it appears that the trailer was not rendered in real-time.
As a spokesperson from The Coalition told GameSpot, the Gears of War: E-Day trailer was not rendered in real-time. Although it used in-game models, textures and environments, it was not in real-time.
“The Gears of War: E-Day trailer was made in collaboration across The Coalition, Blur Studios and GNet developed using in-game models, textures and environments–all captured in Unreal Engine 5. It was not captured in real time as some have suggested.”
In other words, what we saw was pre-rendered footage, something that even high-end PCs may not be able to match.
To be honest, I find this trend of “pre-rendered trailers” pointless, stupid and misleading. In the past, in-engine trailers were in real-time. And that was the point of them. Yes, they weren’t representative of the quality of a game, but they could at least give us an idea of what the engine could do in real-time. However, that’s not the case with GoW: E-Day.
This reminds me of the pre-rendered barrel videos for the first Crysis game. Those videos were made in CRYENGINE and showed amazing physics effects. In their pre-rendered form, they looked smooth. However, in real-time, those videos were running at 1-4fps. So, they were kind of pointless really.
To me, there is no difference between a CG trailer and a pre-rendered in-engine trailer. Because, in a pre-rendered in-engine trailer, you can even use Path Tracing to great effects. Since the trailer for GoW was pre-rendered, it also makes you wonder how many other “in-engine” trailers from that show were pre-rendered.
Gears of War: E-Day takes place fourteen years before Gears of War. War heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to face a new nightmare: the Locust Horde. These subterranean monsters, grotesque and relentless, erupt from below, laying siege on humanity itself.
As I’ve already said, GoW: E-Day won’t be an open-world game. Instead, it’s going to be an entirely linear game. That’s coming straight from the mouth of the game’s director, Nicole Fawcette. And, to be honest, I’m glad the game won’t chase the open-world trend. Let the devs tell a compelling linear story instead.
Finally, there is no ETA on when Gears of War: E-Day will come out.
Stay tuned for more!

Huh, that's disappointing. With UE 5 you really don't need these silly prerendered trailers anymore (for now).
You do if the target render is unable to reach more than 10 FPS on that cute Xbox Series S.
Expect a substantial downgrade in the final version.
I keep forgetting that the Series S exists, d'oh
Doesn't make any difference to average players. It's using UE5 assets and simply it's gonna look good. Just no stuttering and decent requirements and game shouldn't suck. That's all PC players want.
Oh yes, and where's that remastered trilogy again?
I much prefer the "Marcus Fenix" collection for PC actually
>UE5
>No stuttering & decent requirements
You truly are still living in the '90s!
Lucky you…
So, it seems gears of war is completely dead and decomposed to the point of the richest corporation in the world is dropping the sequel to the abominable fifth game and trying to pander to the fans of the OG trilogy. Looks like virtue signalling doesn't bring "the modern audience" after all.
F* open world trend
glad at least the new Dragon Age won't be fully open world
bring back long linear games and open segment games
I agree with your comment but the new DA game (as well as inquisition) is the definition of cancer and everything wrong with gaming these days.
"To be honest, I find this trend of “pre-rendered trailers” pointless, stupid and misleading."
Indeed…
They might as well just post a black screen for 1 minute. I'll never understand the point of CGI trailers for games that don't represent the gameplay or anything about the game other than the tone and setting. Sure it might look nice, but who cares? Why waste all that time and money on something that has zero impact on the game itself?
Or right, it's marketing and people are suckers. While I admit that a cool looking slick CGI trailer might be cool the moment you see it, especially when it's for a series you are interested in, it ultimately means absolutely nothing. It never factors into if I purchase the game or not. What does factor in is gameplay and other's opinions on the final product and what the game actually is. I'd rather see CGI trailers as a epilogue type sizzle reel at the end of the credits of the game, as an artistic interpretation of what the game I just played was like.
CGI or per-rendered trailers should have been done away with by the PS2 era. Before that, it was nice to be able to see an elaborate version of the artistic intentions with the game back when the graphics were to rudimentary to ever render that otherwise.
Totaly agree. So f*kn sick of this pre rendered sh*t. It's pretty much Exactly as CGI crap. They can put in how much resources they bloody wants to 👎
Love that it's linear tho. Never liked open world crap much eaiter. Semi open can be great, but they overdone open world games way to long now!
" game’s director, Nicole Fawcette"
So, trans or woman? Game is screwed regardless.
You know, I didn't even think about it, but yeah, a woman should not be directing a Gears of War game at all. It's supposed to evoke manliness and brute strength and all things awesome. It's like if a woman directed Rocky,, or Rambo. It's just not meant for women… and that's totally ok. I wouldn't want Schwarzenegger directing The Notebook, why would a woman be directing a game made for men?
It was bad enough when Cliff made Gears feminist in the 3rd entry, introducing woman on the frontlines was basically a retcon since previous games they acted only as your personnal secretary.
why is that a problem?
Name 5 woman behind action games or movies, try not to use google.
that doesnt answer my question.
Who cares about your stupid question?
Are you telling me microsoft is being dishonest? I am shocked.
"Gears of War: E-Day will have Ray Tracing for Lighting, Reflections & Shadows"
"According to MS, Gears of War: E-Day will be using Ray Tracing to enhance its Lighting, Reflections and Shadows. Moreover, the game will have over 100x more environment and character details than Gears 5. The Coalition also promises to implement next generation destruction and gore. Not only that the game will have cutting-edge animation tech. In other words, this promises to be one of the best-looking games in UE5."
"The Coalition has also re-confirmed that the game’s debut trailer was an in-engine trailer, and not a CG trailer. "

furthermore mentioned in this new thread –
"“The Gears of War: E-Day trailer was made in collaboration across The Coalition, Blur Studios and GNet developed using in-game models, textures and environments–all captured in Unreal Engine 5. It was not captured in real time as some have suggested.”"

they are saying the footage is using the next generation assets, which will be used in the game. the footage that was uploaded was running on their own hardware. not yet deployed on a console. like most target footage.
Same is now being confirmed for State of Decay 3 as well
Xbox is such a disaster.
30 FPS games, even from Microsoft's own studios.
Games like Starfield ans Redfall that suck.
No one who wants to develop on Xbox since Microsoft forces Series S-X parity, requiring you to develop games for completely different target specs.
Sales that are dead outside of the US.
Game Pass that simply can't attract users.
A bleak future with forced studio closures, since Microsoft is forcing Xbox to recoup the financial crater from buying Activision/Blizzard.
I hope the Activision Blizzard purchase burns MS thoroughly so they don't want to buy any more Publishers. MS has had a control-freak corporate mindset for decades of forcing customers to accept whatever in the hell they want them to and not caring about the wake of trouble they leave behind. If MS were completely out of gaming that would be a very good thing but if they just have to continue meddling in the gaming industry then I want to see them continue to mess up and lose money.
. Disagree. More consolidation is good, if it means the bloated AAA industry crashes sooner. One large publisher the size of EA or Take 2 going under might scare the remaining players straight.
Smh. Sounds like people still don't get the difference between real-time and in-engine. The trailer literally said at the start "In-Engine Footage" not "Real-Time Footage". If you're unable to decipher the difference between the two then that's your problem.
It would make your life so much easier if you don't presume anything until it's nearly released. At least then you'd have solid information about the game. But this is exactly why I hate whenever a game gets announced too early. It creates a lot of unnecessary drama. If they revealed it 6-12 months prior to release like very few games have done in the past we'd have gameplay footage right away and very little speculation.
It did look like its not real time, i dunno why people thought so. Still, its using UE5, so it should look very good too. The performance will probably suck, but ya know.
I mean, in-engine doesn't mean anything else than in-engine. There's a big difference between an in-engine trailer and a gameplay trailer. I don't defend M$ here, but…🤷♂️
