Until Dawn Remake feature

Until Dawn Original vs Remake Early Graphics Comparison

A couple of days ago, Sony revealed a remake of Until Dawn for PS5 and PC. And yesterday, YouTube’s ‘Cycu1’ shared an early graphics comparison video between the original version and this upcoming remake. So, let’s take a look at it, shall we?

Until Dawn Remake will be powered by Unreal Engine 5. The game will have a new lighting system, and it will support ray tracing. According to the devs, RT will enhance the game’s character shadows. Plus, there will be a third-person camera mode. Now that’s a welcome surprise. Players can also expect contextual character movement animations.

From what we can see, the remake does look better than the original version. One of the biggest differences is in the hair rendering. The remake clearly has better hair than the original version. You can also spot better textures in some places. And yes, the lighting received a next-gen upgrade.

The good thing here is that the game seems to have the exact same cut-scenes. As such, we get the following one-to-one comparison scenes that you can see in the following video. So, make sure to watch it as it can give you an idea of what you can expect from it.

Sony plans to release Until Dawn Remake on PC in 2024. For those wondering, there is no exact ETA on when it will come out. Sony hasn’t also revealed yet the game’s PC requirements.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

  1. I’m glad that women and high-estrogen feminine men (homosexuals) who like stories and gossip (like little girls do) can finally enjoy this movie.

  2. Kinda prefer the original here, the lightning is more archaic, but imo Remake just smears everything.

  3. If the game is solely focused on visuals then it’s not a remake at all. It’s a remaster. The 2 terms aren’t interchangeable. They mean very different things.

A remaster updates to support modern resolutions, better textures, better lighting etc.

A remake usually includes the features found in a remaster but also adds content, levels, quests, things to find and even allows the Developer to change the story a little or a lot.

    1. What your describing is a reimagining or a reboot. It’s a remake in the sense that the game was rebuilt from the ground up kinda like TLoU Part I. I don’t think that game implemented anything new either in terms of gameplay, missions or storytelling but just about everything got a makeover. They used the same audio files, cutscenes, gameplay, etc. but on a new or more updated version of the engine that was used prior.

It replicates just about everything you remembered from the initial release but it’s still technically an entirely new game altogether because of drastic changes that were made. The same can be said about the remakes for Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. I’ve attached a video that does a great job at showcasing the differences of all these terminologies since people quite often get it wrong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GL7e-7fHNg

    1. there is more that can be done with the engine and could have also done for the game. plus it’s easier to make mods for. which means further enhancements can be made.

  4. New motion blur looks like trash. The noise from the low quality of the effect is super distracting in addition to how the effect is turned way up from the original. It looks awful.
Hair rendering also looks far worse aside from the shadows. The fine strands of hair are a dithered noisy mess now.
Of all the games that need a visual overhaul for a new port, this was not even remotely one of them.

    1. there are some improvements, featuring higher res textures, fuller field of view, and added non baked light sources; most noticeable when characters properly cast shadows on themselves and other characters. apposed to originally receiving shadows from unknown light sources in some scenes. @ 1:00, @1:49

not sure though why the Quarry still looks better in some cases. which was UE4 and not UE5. it’s likely possible this remake/remaster could also be done instead on UE4. with the same number of adjustments made.

also i think this would have impressed even more if it used metahumans. but i guess that’s for a possible sequel or future games.

      1. Some of the scenes in The Quarry were so incredible that it looked like it was actually a movie. Honestly I know people call these movie simulators or whatever but as long as graphics and animation are compelling, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. And I agree that the improvements here are substantial. But I don’t think the game was “remade.” Using all the same animations as before. Some models, textures, and lighting as you mentioned were improved which I believe would fall under a remaster. Otherwise I don’t know what a remaster is. Which is also possible. But just as an example….Mafia was a remake. Mafia 2 was a remaster.

        1. It does look like a movie. and for the most part from what I’ve seen, i think ue4 can still deliver some very good quality movie visuals. as for the comparison UE5’s Untill dawn seems to feature reworked environments as well, as seen @ 0:40 with fuller trees and @ 1:24 with remodeled cliffs.

so it’s more like a Enhanced edition. which is actually more than a remastering. a remaster is usually the same content preserved underneath with crisper visuals and effects.
