Bethesda and Epic Games are handing out The Evil Within for free on the Epic Games Store. Starting today and lasting until October 26th, you can head to its Epic Games Store page and grab your own free copy.
The Evil Within, created by Tango Gameworks and led by Shinji Mikami, embodies pure survival horror. In this game, you get to be Detective Sebastian Castellanos. Sebastian will have to fight to stay alive using only a few tools in a super creepy and messed-up world of bad dreams.
As you venture through the game, things will get super intense and nerve-wracking. Players will come across all sorts of scary stuff, dodge nasty traps, and make sure they have what they need to stay alive, even when the odds are stacked against them. The world in the game is seriously messed up – hallways, walls, doors, and even whole buildings can change right before your eyes, trapping you in a twisted reality where danger can pop up from anywhere and everywhere.
The Evil Within came out in 2014 and had optimization issues. However, in 2023, most PC gamers will be able to run it smoothly. Ah, the beauty of new PC hardware.
If you’re interested, you can simply click here to grab your free copy.
Have fun!

Next game is gonna be the evil within 2 https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/15e2c98db559cac0c99ddd015e9cc9b497f85b4e3a336af9048cdfe8b03ab67f.gif
Damn! Just when I replayed it for second time…
PSA:
You can fix the performance issues John mentioned by simply using DXVK.
The game has a badly coded DX11 renderer which constantly creates new vertex & index buffers instead of reusing the already created ones.
Valve’s DXVK fixes that misdesign with the translated Vulkan API render code, which can massively increase FPS, as you can see here from the time the patch for the Evil Within was first merged into DXVK and tested on Linux:

Certain enemies deal more damage and attack much faster at a higher frame rate (above 60fps), so it’s probably not a good idea to use DXVK.
That’s some rather unique logic you have there:
First of all, framelimiters do actually exist; in fact, DXVK even has a built-in one that you can activate easily.
And secondly, why don’t you want a performance upgrade which you are literally getting for free, including much more stable frametimes?
Now that you know, do you enjoy that your GPU does useless work by constantly re-creating vertex & index buffers?
Literally SMH right now…
Even without DXVK the game run at locked 60fps on my PC and it was no point running the game at over 60fps because of the gameplay physics bugs mentioned in the gamingwiki article. I also havent noticed any stutters / judder on my VRR monitor, however, on my old GT60 plasma TV (fixed refresh rate) I did see some strange judder when the camera panned, so thanks for letting me know that frametime was the cause. I might test DXVK now in this game because I prefer gaming on my panasonic GT60 plasma and especially when the game is locked at 60fps.
EDIT – OK, so I tried DXVK, but the results are disappointing. The game is running at over 60fps, but the framerate is much worse and there’s also a slight input lag with the same 60fps lock. DXVK worked great for me in GTA4, but the evil within runs better without it, at least on my PC.
Same thing can be said for the second one. Linux is the future indeed !
jesus any way of using dxvk on morrowind?
you think be able to run that 20 plus year old at hundreds of fps
yes without tons of graphics mods, in outdoors due to the fact morrowind does not have lods you get 30 fps or under due to high render range.
I just had a look on PCGW, and there a mod called “MGE XE” is mentioned which adds DX9 support to Morrowind, which can then get translated to Vulkan via DXVK.
You can find that mod on Nexus, it has the number 41102 in the URL.
And just like with Fallout: New Vegas, don’t forget to use NTCore’s “4GB Patch” on the game’s executable in order to set the LAA (Large Adress Aware) flag, because Morrowind is 32-bit only.
Else you might run into out-of-memory crashes, since DXVK has to use slightly more RAM in order to accomplish its DirectX-to-Vulkan translation magic.
Yeah i got all of that , you cant run mods without all that stuff but i dont know if you can use dxvk with mgxe i am not seeing anything like it anywhere, i see dv8k for dx8 but its not there yet, might as well use open mw which does not have lua scripting support for script mods.
Epic Games Store…why? It’s better from the High Seas store without the Game Launcher OS.
Piracy is not always reliable source even for single player games. Links get taken down, torrents eventually stop having seeders, etc. And with older games it can be even more troublesome since piracy is more focused on current games just like consumers in general. Maybe this can also be a problem with digital stores as well, but it’s good to have more sources just in case.
Agreed…but High Seas store is more reliable then not, stores decide to take something down it’s gone, many forums and torrent sites have a request section if it really comes to that
Agreed, you can’t ever trust digital stores of any kind, but since we are talking about free games, then why not? Some games i own thanks to EGS that i coudn’t pirate otherwise, like Elite: Dangerous, Mordhau, Elder Scrolls online, to name a few.
Different tastes in games different needs i guess…but yeah i just try to avoid those, stores, launchers etc…install play and not depend on any online thing and such
From Epic the developers will get some money, even if it costs you nothing.
But f them, right?
Does devs get money if i “buy” the game when it is offered for free?
Of course. The offer is by Epic to attract customers on their platform. The developers are still paid, maybe less than ordinary, but they are paid nevertheless by Epic. Otherwise why they allowed their game to be free
Ok, that makes sense.
It’s the Epic version, so brace yourselves folks, the worst version just as always: No DLCs included, no pre-order bonuses that the GOG version has and no various enhancements from the Microsoft Store version.
Man, why can’t they bring the MS Store version enhancements to Steam/GOG? No way I’d make an account on a $h11ty store like MS Store and each MS Store version of games have awful config/directory file names, and on top of all of that, no way I’d give a dime to a woke company such as MS. And yes, I want them to bring the enhancements so that I can pirate it. Stay mad buyfags.
What enhancements are those ? I haven’t try this game since it launched, and at launch it was a terrible experience on pc.
From PCGamingWiki:
The Microsoft Store version is significantly different with regards to gameplay, improved performance, and bug fixes. It features:
First-person mode with an Field of View option and icons for the lantern and sneaking.
Infinite ammo mode
Low/medium options for camera bob
Increased stamina (5 seconds by default instead of 3)
I take it the MS store version isn’t available for piracy?
I took a glance at r/Crackwatch only to find no crack or repack for the MS Store version, but even if there was, you’d be required to have a fake MS Store account for it to work (believe me, even a single-player game like ReCore required a fake account when I played it cracked it before it was released on Steam and I regretted it, the game was pure trash).
The MS Store DRM is just as cancerous as the GFWL all over again, so glad MS is slowly slowly abandoning it and no more exclusives are being released for it.
anyway i can get the ms version with mods?

i was interested in recore, so isnt it metroidvania like?
I don’t really remember, all I remember is that it was an awful Mega Man wannabe like the 3D Mega Mans on the PS2 (these ones sucked too). Not to mention, I encountered a game-breaking bug in a mission called Exclusion Zone where the door you had to go to was closed, I looked up a walkthrough video to realize that it really was a bug in the game and not me not knowing what to do, after that, I gave up and uninstalled it and watch the ending on JewTube (not like I was enjoying this trash anyway).
great game i like even the first and second
Love this game. Hope we get 3rd one.
The ending was quite conclusive since everyone in the “umbrella” of the game died thanks to the kill switch… or maybe not, there must be higher ups or who would be so dumb as to put a kill switch on himself?
There is also a game called Eternal Threads that you can get for free on EGS. Man, why do you have to suck this much John, is it too much effort to announce that there are two games being offered for free?
For some reason, John stopped announcing free games if they are not big AAA+ enough. Total clickbait wh0r3.
does this have the first person mod the microsoft version?
you can also get it for free on every torrent platforms from it launch date !
