PAYDAY 3 will get upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 after launch

Starbreeze has revealed that PAYDAY 3 will be using Unreal Engine 4 at launch, and that it’ll be porting it to Unreal Engine 5 after launch.

As the team stated in the game’s official FAQ.

“Q: WHAT ENGINE IS THE GAME DEVELOPED IN?

A: Unreal Engine 4. We started developing the game on Unreal 4, so that’s what makes the most sense for us to release. We’re planning on upgrading to Unreal Engine 5 post launch.”

Starbreeze has not revealed whether the UE5 version will be using any of the new features. In other words, we don’t know whether PAYDAY 3 will use Nanite or Lumen. We also don’t know whether it will have any Ray Tracing effects.

In PAYDAY 3, players will step out of retirement back into the life of crime in the shoes of the Payday Gang, the envy of their peers and the nightmare of law-enforcement wherever they go. Several years after the crew’s reign of terror over Washington DC has ended, they assemble once again to deal with the threat that roused them out of early retirement.

Prime Matter will release PAYDAY 3 on September 21st. You can also find here its first gameplay trailer!

  1. WHAT?! AFTER LAUNCH?! Never seen that before… Hmm, and after a very disappointing trailer… imagine the state of things where we get these kind of decisions…

  2. If the game ends up being good from the start, why fix what isn’t broke? If the game is a pile of crap from the start and needs this upgrade to fix it, why didn’t you just delay it instead of shipping a broken game?

  3. I don’t know why game engines are used to market the game. Who cares what engine and what version you are using. You are the ones using the engine, not the players.
