Assassins Creed Unity feature 5

Assassin’s Creed Unity gets an interesting NPCs LOD Fix Mod

Modder ‘Sunbeamskall’ has released a mod that aims to fix the annoying NPCs LOD issues in Assassin’s Creed Unity. This is an interesting mod and although it has some issues, it can really improve the game’s visuals.

Now before continuing, we should note that this mod DOES NOT increase the view distance of objects, geometry, vegetation or characters. Instead, it attempts to fix the constant LOD changes that occur while approaching NPCs.

Since I’m a huge Assassin’s Creed Unity fan, I went ahead and tested the mod (which you can download from here). And yes, it does work as you can see in the following video. However, the mod currently has some issues that Sunbeamskall must address.

Assassin's Creed: Unity - NPCs LOD Fix Mod Showcase

Let’s start with the good news though. At the start of the video, you can see the two NPCs retaining their LODs. Then, when we disabled the mod at 0:39, you can clearly see the game’s vanilla LOD changes. And then, when we re-enabled the mod at 1:26, we get NPCs that retain their LOD models.

As said, there are some issues with the current version of this mod. For instance, sometimes it locks the game’s low-quality LOD models of NPCs (and not the high-quality ones). You can see this in the video above. Furthermore, at random times, the mod constantly and rapidly changes the LOD models for every character that is on the screen.

Ideally, I’d love to see a more polished version of this mod. Moreover, the game would also benefit from a mod that increases its view distance of buildings, objects and NPCs. And, truthfully, these changes could easily turn Assassin’s Creed Unity into a current-gen game. Because yes, even in 2023, AC: Unity remains an incredibly good-looking game!

    1. Yeah that’s why it did so well, Haha. This game and syndicate were the most terrible rubbish to ever grace modern technology.

  1. Still looking better than the current AC games, even the upcoming Mirage.
Still unmatched NPC density. Despite its flaws this was, and still is, groundbreaking and no other game has become near.

    1. Yeah it really did feel like AC Unity was a “next-gen” game at the time. After Unity the franchise just didn’t progress much in terms of technical achievements. There were some incremental improvements at best (like some of the graphics effects), regressive in others (like the crowd density). Maybe the next AC after Mirage will pull a Unity, but given the state of the industry and also taking into consideration what ubisoft has been like for the past decade, I’m not holding my breath.

  2. Dumb Ubilol made this game on DX11…
DX12 or a Vulkan port is must have.
DXVK works, but like always it’s not perfect.

    1. Kind of hard to release a 2014 game in DX12 when it wasn’t even available until 3Q 2015 ……

      1. Then why was all the cards you bought in 2012 pushed DX12 and was DX12 ready m you talk alot of nonsense man. You need to stop, please.

  3. If only Alex and team had one more year, the future would’ve been different. The fact that a game from a french developer about the french revolution was slammed at launch. Kind of ironic how they didn’t allow to represent their own country-game properly. Yes, that’s ubisoft for ya. Tech sure is booming but Gaming is dying.

    1. I tried playing that filth and I don’t know what to do in that game. They saw Witcher 3 & tried copying it an it went all over the place.
