Now here is something that caught us off guard. 3DFX, the company that a lot of us loved back in the 90s, is re-entering the GPU market. Yeap, 3DFX is back baby and it’s here to compete against NVIDIA, AMD and Intel.
3DFX will release later this year the Voodoo 3DX23; a GPU that according to the company will be faster than NVIDIA’s almighty RTX 4090. To back up those claims, 3DFX showcased this GPU running Cyberpunk 2077 at native 4K with Psycho RT settings. Without any kind of re-constructions, 3DFX’s GPU was able to push over 100fps. You can watch the video here.
What’s also crazy here is that the Voodoo 3DX23 will be priced at only $999.99. In a market saturated with expensive graphics cards, the Voodoo 3DX23 will be a breath of fresh air. 3DFX will also equip this new GPU with 30GB of GDDR6X video memory. And yes, this new GPU will also excel at Ray Tracing. In fact, 3DFX claims that it can offer up to 1.5X better RT performance than the RTX4090.
3DFX will release the Voodoo 3DX23 in Q3 2023. The company will also hold a pre-launch event at Gamescom 2023. What’s also crazy here is the first game that will be shown running on the Voodoo 3DX23. 3DFX and Crytek have partnered to showcase Crysis 4 running on this new GPU at Gamescom 2023. Crysis 4 will have a full path tracing renderer, and promises to bring back the “Can it run it Crysis” meme.
And yes, this is an April’s Fools joke and nothing more. Sorry but not sorry!

Didn’t you run the same joke previous years? It’s very familiar
3DFX re-enters the GPU market

Crysis 4 on 3dfx ?? My my, John never misses one.
Graven has a 3DFX mode that smooths the pixelization, every “retro” game should have that feature”
Clearly no one is paying attention to the date today 😉
I generally stay off of the internet on April 1st. Just not worth it.
Totally 😉
The 3dfx name and the posting date give it all away before we even get to reading the article…
But the best (crule and unsalted) “joke” of it all is the one about the current GPU prices…
But i’ll stick with buying previously owned barely used cards when a new gen comes out and the previous one goes cheap. Did this with my current MSI 3090 Suprim X (barely used sold for 875 Euros, hefty drop from the 2200Euros the previous owner spent on it new)…. And very happy with it, it runs perfectly.
Next one will be a barely used 4090 when the 50xx series comes out.
Both Nvidia and AMD can stick their unjustified overly-inflated greed-driven retail prices right up their respective behinds.
LOL, this reminded me of the poor folks who would clinge onto their Voodoo GPUs as if their lifes depend on it; even trying to convince everyone how great DOOM 3 is running for them!
Meanwhile, here’s how it looked:

Looks just like original Doom, haha.
Half Life 1 ?
Doom 3 was released in 2005, while Voodoo 3D accelerators (voodoo cards weren’t exactly GPUs, the GeForce 256 was the first GPU) golden era was from 1996 to about 2001. Games from this era run best on Voodoo cards, especially unreal engine 1 games. Some games even refused to run without 3DFX card (“Glide” API only games).
not very convincing as an April fool joke.

Instantly knew it was April’s Fool. Not falling for these today or ever. Besides, 3dfx is owned by Nvidia (I think) so them coming back is not happening unless Nvidia wants it to.
3dfx no longer exists, Nvidia just bought it for the patents.
yeah, it was what we call in business term a “merger-absorption” , and Nvidia bough 3DFx mainly for it SLI technology , they had deeper pockets and the Geforce 256 was killing the game back then in comparaison to the Voodoo 3 , it was one of the best era in GPU side of things !
Yeah, back when you could buy a top end video card without having to sell your children in the black market
That’s not the GPU era, that’s the “3D graphics accelerator” era.
They’re still kickin’ a bit, just not in the GPU space.
We did not buy 3dfx, we only bought its assets. The legal entity (company) remained separate.
NVIDIA SLI and 3dfx SLI are not the same technology, although the idea of dividing up the work is universal and goes back to SGI and others.
Exactly, Nvidia sued 3DFX bankrupting the company just weeks after the Voodoo 5 5500 was released. Bought a 5500 and suddenly had zero support. No drivers, no anything making the card useless very quickly. It’s why I switched to ATI and remained for over a decade.
That’s not what happened either.
3dfx Osborne’d itself and it’s early advantage of GLide turned into an unsolvable liability when the whole rest of the industry moved to D3D and OpenGL
I was an executive at AMD too and you couldn’t pay me to game with an AMD/ATI GPU. It’s not that the chip designs are bad (although they are years behind NVIDIA), it’s that ATI/AMD drivers are awful.
And AMD has never fully integrated ATI. Lisa Su doesn’t even know now to spell GPU.
When AMD launched Ryzen, I was working the launch event and 13 of the 15 gaming demo systems (and all of the non-integrated ones) had NVIDIA GeForce in them.
Lol sure thing bro.
But I bet she can spell Ryzen
?? Touché, and very true. Jim Keller’s Zen architecture saved her career and has made her rich.
Problem is, he’s at Intel now. So it’s only a matter of time before she can’t keep milking Zen and AMD gets run over by his latest genius architecture, now with an Intel logo on it.
Jim Keller left Intel three years ago, fake insider guy. Everything you said thus far is empty BS. He is currently not working on CPU-anything.
His two years of work at Intel, not only imparting on them what is great about Ryzen, but in getting their future path right will pay off eventually in their battle against AMD.
But you missed the point entirely. AMD will have a total of 10 years to milk all they can out of Ryzen. So that means 3 or 4 years left.
And it remains to be seen what Tenstorrent will do with Keller at the lead. As if Intel and AMD’s futures weren’t already becoming more and more irrelevant thanks to NVIDIA, now you have start-ups like Tenstorrent that will be able to move faster and use blank-sheets to change everything from the dying x86 industry.
Intel has long suffered from the innovator’s dilemma, foolishly dumping their ARM division and sabotaged their own GPU/stream processor efforts because of the requirement of using x86 as the building block. It’s only a matter of time.
Meanwhile AMD has never appreciated (or even liked) what they bought in ATI. They are just fine using it as a source of integrated/multi-die chipsets for the low-end and console spaces. When I was running the whole enterprise ISV effort for GPU we couldn’t get any one at AMD to care about GPU compute. Then the whole of the engineering team was laid off or left. And now they want to get serious about AI? Comical.
Ps. Yes, ATI/AMD GPU driver quality is very poor. I have an endless list of reasons for knowing that.
AMD drivers seem perfectly fine when I use them daily on my last three GPU’s, fake guy.
fake guy?
Exactly, Nvidia sued 3DFX bankrupting the company just weeks after the Voodoo 5 5500 was released. Bought a 5500 and suddenly had zero support. No drivers, no anything making the card useless very quickly. It’s why I switched to ATI and remained for over a decade.
Well John I remember couple of years ago you posting and trolling us for April 1st abut Playstation releasing games to pc and look couple years after that, it’s happening so maybe this stupid joke turns some positive incarnated competition in couple of years like that did? 🙂
Yeah but Do you know Nvidia bought 3Dfx? So 3Dfx is part of Nvidia…!! They own it. lol
Btw it isn’t an April fool joke
It’s not that “3dfx is a part of nvidia”, there is no 3dfx anything to talk about anymore.
Not u again. Ppl really don’t like your nonsense. You keep contradicting everyone like an idi0t and no one really talks to you or is interested in what you’ve got to say.
You’re gonna go in defensive/denial and start ur sht again prolly at which point I won’t give a sht and block you. Hope others do the same.
Wow, i don’t even remember replying to you before or hating you in particular.
I meant 3dfx is gone for 20+ years now and nvidia and graphics tech are now so far beyond what 3dfx were/had at the time that it’d be a stretch to consider 3dfx of any kind of value nowadays.
Also, with some luck, barely a handful of former employees are still at nvidia after all these years and the rest are spread out or even working at different stuff to reform the company.
Plus maybe legal issues with the name or patents…
Doesn’t sound like out-of-the-blue nonsense to me.
They should make a voodoo series in respect to 3dfx. And I would buy it just for that name again
3Dfx can come back if someone buys their logo and name rights. 3Dfx declared bankrupt and was insolvent, their patents were purchased by Nvidia, ATI(AMD) and Intel. The rights to the name itself is not owned by Nvidia.
If only he did a better job with that soggy thumbnail, maybe some kids would’ve fell for it.
This time around he posted the nonsense on March the 31 ? My #AI Bot pointed that out… Because of this mistake, his credibility is out
the window… He fixed the date later on though. #FatalMistake ?

PC
-A top of the line 3dfx Voodoo 3 from 2000 had an MSRP of $250.
-A top of the line RTX 4090 has an MSRP of $1600.
Consoles
-A Playstation 2 from 2000 had an MSRP of $300.
-A Playstation 5 has an MSRP of $500.
So while consoles have less than doubled in price over 20 years, PC GPU have increased over 6 times in price.
The salient point is that comparision isnt accurate because nVidia and AMD are engaing in price fixing which is illeagal.
They aren’t tho. Or if they are, there is no evidence of it.
Nvidia and ATI were investigated for price fixing in 2006. While the DOJ eventually dropped the investigation, the feds only start such investigations if there is at least some evidence of price fixing such as former employees acting as whistleblowers.
So your agita is based on an inconclusive investigation 17 years ago? I’m sorry but do you really consider that enough to act as if it’s a fact that they are currently price fixing?
Amd doesn’t have enough market share or production to participate in price fixing. Nvidia sets prices for everyone. If amd were to sell cheaper they’d just sell everything out in days and lose possible profit. If they set price higher than Nvidia then they don’t sell at all. As long as people are buying new cards, the prices will stay -and climb
Lol you umm. You might want to Google price fixing.
I will make it simpler for you. Amd too small, can’t fix price.
That’s…. Not what price fixing is.
I love how you’re so condescending in every post you’ve ever made –
That when someone agrees with you –
you don’t even let them agree with you. LOL
B1k3rdude: “nVidia and AMD are engaing in price fixing”
Dan Kaschel: “They aren’t tho.”
cmlvdCBu aWdnZXJz: “Amd doesn’t .. participate in price fixing.”
Dan Kaschel: “YOU MIGHT WANT TO GOOGLE PRICE FIXING. – THAT’S NOT WHAT PRICE FIXING IS!”
Holy sh*t dude just let the guy agree with you.
Way to turn the quire into the mob via your own disillusions.
News flash dan – not everyone needs to be 100% factually correct in order to agree with you.
Stop being a condescending a**hole on every tech article you read.
I’m not proud of being a condescending a**hole (and it’s true, I often am). But neither do I judge the accuracy or merit of a person’s opinion based on whether it aligns with mine–and that I don’t consider a weakness.
Know that expressing myself with patience and compassion has always been a struggle for me–particularly online–and that I will continue trying to seek out my better angels. Perhaps one of these days you’ll see my name and I won’t be being a d*ck. You never know.
There is, but thus far the EU/FTC havent done anything about, yet….
LOL, LMAO even. Are you seriously comparing the graphical capabilities of the PS5 against an RTX 4090?????
You’re missing the point. He’s comparing the relative change in price between generations of PC hardware and generations of consoles.
NooOoO you don´t get this huuh. There´s still a chipshortage because of Covid and even tho it´s sooo much harder for the poor companies to give us awesome cards, they try to sell everyone and their dog a good one. It´s ok that it´s expensiverer k? Because we like to support our favourite companies through those difficult times and everyone has to step up.
Consumers are here at the fault I say for buying 1500$ cards in the first place. They learned now they can get away with this so why would they change it? This and ofc the lack of any given law that prevents them from overpricing. Can´t wait for RTZ8900 Pro Plus Max for only 16 grand
sure but those videocards are far more powerful than consoles and nvidia is price gouging.
During the time of Voodoo 3 there was a lot more competition. Multiple API’s, not all cards played well with all titles, and not to mention the technology was far less complex. On top of the margins, theres other reasons why a top end card now costs over a grand.
All this proves is the market is there for a PS 5 PRO with a 4090 inside…
It really tells you that these cards are being sold for way more then they cost to make. And someone wearing leather jackets and showing off their marble kitchen might lean in to that theory lol

John made april’s fool joke about sony exclusives coming to pc. So gotta be on lookout for this one.
Heh, very noice Jonny boi 🙂
I’ll forever remember the April fool’s John did about HZD coming to PC. And then it came to PC, haha.
Yeah, that joke didn’t age well 🙁 . Curse you Sony…
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/sonys-first-party-titles-officially-coming-to-the-pc-horizon-zero-dawn-in-q4-2018-god-of-war-in-2019/
And then, Crytek f*ed us with the announcement of Crysis 4
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/crysis-4-has-been-announced-powered-by-unreal-engine-4-will-be-exclusive-to-epic-games-store/
Should have said they’ll be demoing the card with Half Life 3. No risk of that ever coming out.
my heart !!!! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b00b5915d2a9a6b52a6f01c38477dd35b3010b33ac19908d3001cf841c0e450f.jpg
Plot twist: it’s actually not a joke. ?
sadly this is not true 🙁
And 3DFX’s new GPU will come packaged with Half Life 3.
I bet majority former 3dfx employees who are been working for Nvidia for years since GeForce 4 are laughing off this joke when 4090 does resembles what 3dfx could been now…. running rt 4k at 100fps….how fast time change
I do not even understand how I ended up here, but I assumed this publish used to be great
IBM is also teasing new GPUs, but they cost 4000$
I heard you need to download more RAM before installing this new April 1st GPU.
Damn…you got me
People comparing old GPUs to today’s GPUs. Lol. Look at even a 6800gt and hold that next to a RTX 4090 or 7900xtx board. There is exponentially more packed into modern gpus.
Just because technology improves doesn’t mean it gets cheaper. In fact a RTX 4090 won’t be obsolete anytime soon. Unless driver support is dropped. Nvidia knows that most RTX 4090 buyers won’t buy something anytime soon. Hence, the price. Which actually is good. You are already getting next gen performance.
“Sorry but no sorry”??? Did autocorrect quit functioning? Are you guys lacking a proofreader? Or is grammar too difficult for you? This lazy-ass writing is becoming tedious to read. If you have no care to proofread your own writing, then you need to find another job.
how dare you toy with me like this
I wish. I miss my VooDoo 2 cards.
Ok
Good news for gamers, competition is always welcome.

Wow! I bought it! Good April Fool’s! ?
Ne zamand?r web sitelerim için arad???m içeri?i sonunda buldum. Bu kadar detayl? ve net aç?klama için te?ekkürler.
April Fools lol
DSOG has been bought by EA and will no longer allow freedom of speech.
Was about to say, that NV bought was left of a bankrupt 3DFX 20+ years ago… I was a victim. Had only bought a Voodoo 5? something for a chunk of change, weeks later went on 3DFX’s website to check for updates only to be greeted by a message about their demise, NV providing limited and brief support then silence… I went ATI/ AMD for a while after that, until seven years ago.
We need all the help we can get to break up the GPU oppressive Technology for Profit Manoply…”Its gone on to long ….. .
Bu makalede anlatt???n?z ?eyler gerçekten çok do?ru ve önemli bence herkesin bilmesi gereken ?eyler bunlar çünkü film izlemenin ne kadar faydal? oldu?unu göstermi?siniz ayr?ca türkçe dublaj filmler hakk?nda da güzel bilgiler vermi?siniz elinize sa?l?k
Ugh they got me. I got through the first paragraph before I remembered Nvidia bought 3DFX and they cannot come back as 3DFX even if they wanted to. The Rick Roll was the best part ?
I’ve been on my guard ALL DAY. But this one got me. Well done.
Hahaha. F*ker. Got me. I was thinking no effin way. Haha
I saw 3dfx and was so excited. Grr, well played
I got so hyped up about this till I realized a rug had been pulled
OH MY GOD!!! oh wait…oh for f*k sake!
You should have waited until April the 1st! You posted the nonsense a day earlier… Now your credibility is gone 🙁 #FakeNews
And it even has downloadable VRAM so it never runs out.
Lol, if a 3dfx April’s Fools got you, you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed
I am truly thankful to the owner of this web site who has shared this fantastic piece of writing at at this place.
Man, if they reentered the market with a new voodoo card it would print money. Wow talk about nostalgia.
Nah it wouldn’t at all.
3dfx brand being revived is impossible in the first place.
Let’s say it was: Would it be competitive at the high end? Absolutely not. If intel with infinite resources and Raja Koduri couldn’t do it, much less would anyone else.
So it would get a ton of media coverage, but benchmarks would show that at best it’s barely ok at mid range, and in this era of internet everyone would know it, and they would conclude it’s a nostalgia trip but not worth it because of poor drivers, lacking in performance and in many technologies like ray tracing, upscalers and such because it’s a small new company… so no.
But John, I just read this on April 2nd.
Oh, you bugger. You totally had me.
LOL. Would have been more believable if you said 32GB…
Read this two days after April’s fools, and laughed hard when I saw the April 1 date.
if only…
And website blocked from Google news on my phone.
I still have a 3DFX card in a 20ish year old system. I remember bringing that system back to the store I used to work when I built it 6 to 8 years prior, and remembering the owner (who is still a good friend where I got my current system from) saying how impressed he was on how the 3DFX card compared to the, at the time, current Nvidia and AMD cards.
Do not make me cry… Totally taking advantage of my nostalgia
If I’m not mistaken, somebody made a cool video with like 20 voodoo2 cards built together
You’re not doing it right John. When you are outed as a prank then you admit the prank.
Yeah, its nostalgic, but April Fools is April Fools.
I would kill for some indie games that use nostalgic graphics like Strafe, thats one of the best underrated gems I seen.
April’s fool must be the stupidest thing ever created by humans….and yet – we still get articles like this on that day.
