It appears that Epic Games is acquiring Mediatonic’s parent company Tonic Games Group for an undisclosed sum, the company announced on Tuesday. Tonic Games is the development company behind the smash-hit sensation, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.
It looks like after Embracer group and Microsoft, Epic Games is also making big power acquisitions, following its 2019 purchases of social video app Houseparty and Rocket League developer Psyonix.
For Fall Guys fans, the gameplay isn’t changing and Epic will continue to invest in making the game a great experience for players across platforms.
As per the FAQ posted on Mediatonic’s Blog, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout will remain purchasable on Steam and PlayStation. If you own the game on these platforms, you’ll still be able to play it from there and will receive future updates.
However, there are no plans right now to make the game free-to-play (it currently costs $19.99). The developer is still bringing the game to both the Xbox and Nintendo Switch platforms as well.
This acquisition might bring EPIC Game monetization across multiple platforms, despite Fall Guys built using the Unity game engine. On the developer’s side, nothing is changing at Mediatonic, as everyone will keep their jobs, and the devs now get the backing of Epic Games as well.
Mediatonic goes on to explain why did the company choose Epic, “We’ve been mutual fans for a while and as we’ve gotten to know the Epic team better, it turns out we have a lot in common and share a lot of the same goals. They really love Fall Guys and our team at Mediatonic.
We’ll continue to be the same team, working on the same game, but we’ll now have the full power of Epic Games to help us take the game to new (dizzying) heights.”
Back in December 2020, as John reported, Fall Guys sold over 11 million units on the PC.
“At Tonic Games Group we often say that ‘everyone deserves a game that feels like it was made for them.’ With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us.
They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team.” – Dave Bailey, Tonic Games Group Co-Founder and CEO.
“Beyond the shared vision among our teams, we see tremendous potential in combining forces with Epic. Whether it’s about making our own games the best they can be or empowering other game developers to take their content from a kernel of an idea to commercial success, we know that together we will be able to reach greater heights.” – Paul Croft, Tonic Games Group, Co-Founder and Chief Games Officer.
“It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal. As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.” – Tim Sweeney, Epic Games Founder and CEO.
The acquisition includes Mediatonic and Fortitude Games, both of which are owned by parent company Tonic Games Group, which announced the deal with Epic today.
Fall Guys is a massively multiplayer party game with up to 60 players online in a free-for-all struggle through round after round of escalating chaos until one victor remains.
Players can dive into a series of ridiculous challenges and wild obstacle courses with masses of other competitors online. Players can also shift between competitive free-for-alls and cooperative challenges. Moreover, players can watch in delight as their fellow competitors bend, bounce, and bash their way to hilarious, physics-based failure.

Hello, my name is NICK Richardson. I’m an avid PC and tech fan since the good old days of RIVA TNT2, and 3DFX interactive “Voodoo” gaming cards. I love playing mostly First-person shooters, and I’m a die-hard fan of this FPS genre, since the good ‘old Doom and Wolfenstein days.
MUSIC has always been my passion/roots, but I started gaming “casually” when I was young on Nvidia’s GeForce3 series of cards. I’m by no means an avid or a hardcore gamer though, but I just love stuff related to the PC, Games, and technology in general. I’ve been involved with many indie Metal bands worldwide, and have helped them promote their albums in record labels. I’m a very broad-minded down to earth guy. MUSIC is my inner expression, and soul.

F*ck that, at this point, I just hope someone will do a terrorist attacks @Tencent and Epic Games…
They don’t need terrorists attacks. Sweeney is Epic’s worst enemy. Over 2 years EGS has been up and running and it’s still bare-bones. People just use it to get free games or an AAA exclusive.
You are right people use Epic games for free games, other than that only thing that excuse them is Unreal Engine 4,soon UE5.Epic Games as a company for gamers/games died with Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War 3,their Graphic Engine is what keeps them alive as a company/administration wise.
EA since they signed the contract with Fifa,Premier League etc(i’m not in too those games/real football)..but i saw some real matches on TV while browsing and guess what…EA sports logo everywhere, also a friend of mine said that the real football matches, uses some tech made by EA and stuff, like monitoring,VrR camera, ball sensors etc…EA makes so much money from football that they cancel projects, studios etc.Epic at least offers UE4 for free.
“Epic Games as a company for gamers/games died with Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War 3”
And yet they still make money with a game called Fortnite.
true…but fortnite is not a game is same map over and over and over again where you spawn and play again and again and again without a conclusion or satisfaction.
At least Unreal Tournament had multiple maps, different objectives(capture the flag, destroy nexus core, etc),a campaign…Fortnite is just another Pubg,LoL,dota style of a game…repetetive as hell and designed to buy skins and packs.
I miss the old days when you bought a game full on disc with engaging multiplayer and a good campaign without 1 mil patches after launch.Imagine buying Cyberpunk 2077 disc and no internet, you will be stuck with 1.00 version(i dont know exactly but somewhat in 2000’s ver 1.00 was final version, today 1.00 is more like 0.01 version).
Would you bet money on Epic or EGS going solvent? I know i woudn’t.
EA is in a strong position financially and show a profit of around 1 billion USD every year.
Epic is going to probably run into some trouble financially if Fortnite ever goes down the sh*tter but that just never happens. Epic has made billions and billions of USD from selling microtransactions in Fortnite over the years.
How goddamn stupid and cruel do you have to be to wish for a terrorist attack on a company because they did something you didn’t like to videogames.
This is insane.
I hope you say this to all those f*cking PRO-TRUMP subhuman out there, huh ????
Do you know what is insane you stoopid*ss ? YOU, WHO ENCOURAGE A SH*T COMPANY THAT IS CLOSELY LINKED TO CCP, THEREFORE SPYING OTHER COUNTRIES, FORCED LABOR AND CHILD WORKERS………..
Saying that calling for a terrorist attack on a company is insane is not even close to the same as encouraging EGS dumbass
I hope you say this to all those f*cking PRO-TRUMP subhuman out there, huh ????
Bruh
Fedposting is for losers and , well, feds.
AND THOSE WHO ENCOURAGE A SH*T
COMPANY THAT IS CLOSELY LINKED TO CCP, SO… INDUSTRIAL SPYING ,
FORCED LABOR AND CHILD WORKERS… this is all good huh ???
CAPS LOCKS IS FOR BOOMERS! Also, lmao.
Ahahah and a BRAIN is made to THINK you stoooooooopida$$
Agreed, but you are not using your brain too much.
From Epic’s POV .. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b0036cf9ae5bd03c91e3a5edf25607df1ceea1a2c9cb8f3191159295ca025479.jpg
I really wonder how much money there is to be made after the acquisition cost and now that the game has passed it’s prime…
Is it counting on a souped up monetization scheme?
Is it because they get a proven studio anyway?
Well done.
press F
Epic is like a rich spoiled child who buys his friends
That’s a good analogy and I agree.
Epic is like a rich corporation that buys lesser corporations.
Epic is 45% owned by Tencent billionaire shareholding compagny (directly link to the CCP) so there comparison is so so I think…
I guess it’s better for Mediatonic than if EA bought them.
In what way? You prefer EGS integration?
Epic kills PC games, just look at their graveyard like Unreal Tournament, etc
imo EA is the worst of the worst Publishers because they not only kill off games but they kill off entire Developers.
Who cares about yet another boomer shooter? And it’s just one game vs all the franchises and dev studios EA killed to date.

Going by their last efforts at porting games over to VR (Id with DoomVFR and Bethesda with FOIV and Skyrim) It probably wont be better than the Doom3VR mod that’s been around for several years.
GOOD NEWS
SJW dumb studio now at the right place
Hope they’ll remove this trash junk for autists from Steam.
Ahahahahah
Nice choice of title picture with the little pirate.
Epic, make piracy great again.
I know i’m talking to a broken record at this point, but is fall guys even pirateable, being multiplayer and all?
No mention of “muh CCP”, me being the first? That’s progress.
They had a fad hit game that was popular for like 1 month and they used that clout gained to cash out. Good for them.
