Next-Gen Metro game will still focus on single-player story-driven gameplay, will have multiplayer

In a recent 10th anniversary studio update 4A games promised that it will put more emphasis on the single-player story-driven component for its next Metro game which is currently in development for the PC and next-gen consoles.

The next Metro game in the franchise will also feature a completely overhauled game engine and renderer, and will take full advantage of next-gen hardware-accelerated Ray tracing as well.

As the press release reads:

“As part of a major studio update, 4A Games has also confirmed the next Metro title is in development for next generation consoles and PC. This will include a complete overhaul of the engine and renderer to take advantage of the new power, storage, and hardware supported ray tracing afforded by the new consoles”.

“Furthermore, the recently announced partnership with Saber Interactive will allow 4A Games to explore a multiplayer experience in the new Metro universe. “

“As a small studio we have never been able to do justice to these ambitions, and our ideas have never made it beyond the prototype phase,” said 4A Games. “But with Saber’s experience in online gaming, we are now actively exploring multiplayer concepts that will offer a new way to experience the world of Metro.”

While the studio also plans to add an online MP component to the game, 4A Games reassured it remains committed to the single-player experiences the series is known for.  The developers have promised that the single-player campaign part of the game won’t suffer because of any of the multiplayer features.

“We’re committed to delivering a great story driven single player experience; this is what the Metro series is founded on,” 4A Games said.

“Let’s start by saying, we hear your concerns. We’re not looking at multiplayer as a box-ticking exercise, or to jump on some trend or bandwagon. As creators, we want to explore a multiplayer experience that makes complete sense in the Metro universe.”

“We’re also committed to ensuring that whatever we do, it’s not to the detriment of our single-player ambitions. We’ll need a dedicated team focused solely on the online component, and this is what our new partnership with Saber can bring; years of expertise, technology, and know-how to help us realize our ambitions.”

“As a studio, we want to constantly push ourselves to create bigger and better games, but we also listen to what the fans are saying, and we know what’s important to you. We take our responsibility to the franchise seriously, and we think you’ll be excited about our plans for the next chapter.”

Metro writer Dmitry Glukhovsky is also helping with 4A’s new game, and will write the game’s story. Back in August 2020, Embracer Group acquired the developers of Metro Exodus, 4A Games, and we already know the studio is currently working on the next Metro game.

When it comes to the Multiplayer component of the next Metro game, 4A Games said, “Our partnership with Saber will allow us to explore something that has always been an ambition for 4A Games, but something we have never been able to commit to until now: a multiplayer experience in the Metro universe.”

Lastly, the studio also plans to work on new projects and a new IP, which they hope will sit alongside the Metro series. No other hints about the new IP have been provided, but 4A confirms they now have over 150 employees over two locations.

“Finally – while we expect to be working on Metro for many years to come, we want to stretch ourselves by exploring new projects and new IP. In 2017 we released Arktika.1, a sci-fi FPS for the Oculus Rift, and our first steps towards a goal of being a multi-project studio. We now want to grow this ambition to another new AAA experience that can sit alongside the Metro series.

We’re hiring across both our Malta and Kyiv studios to help us bring these dreams to reality, so if you think you have what it takes and want to join our team, head to our careers page and apply at 4a-games.com.mt/careers !”

Here is hoping that the next Metro game in this franchise remains committed to the single-player experiences the series is known for.

As 4A games said, “We are still figuring things out, but know that we are absolutely committed to more single-player, story driven experiences in the Metro universe that our fans have come to know and love.”

Stay tuned for more!

      1. I wouldn’t be so sure about that… 4A has a very devoted, albeit small, fanbase that love their games that know better than to go anywhere near cheat-ridden multiplayer crap.

      2. Maybe the people that talk bs about BR doesn’t correlate with the people that play’s BR, there’s 7 billion people in the world after all…

  1. did you see the demon souls remake removed gender? Bluepoint made it a western studio. Fcking soy hipsters couldnt resist, they had one job to remake the game. Speaking of which japanesse in 4chan hated it, they said it looks like a generic american game, they changed the art style too.

Any game that has attractive female characters is not made in the west.

    1. “Any game that has attractive female characters is not made in the west.”

Souls series isn’t well know for attractive females, with the exception of the giant lady with big breasts, but female players looks almost the same as males.

“Fcking soy hipsters couldnt resist, they had one job to remake the game.”

How many times do i have to tell these dorks that these changes come from above dev paygrade. There’s that Stonetoss comic about corporate pigs wanting to appeal to the kids, so Sony publisher probably told Bluepoint to make the game more modern beyond graphics and there you go…

    2. Is that pic the worst the remake has to offer? Doesn’t look that bad, not as bad as forking over 570 dollars or so to play it btw.

“We will see how 4A, GSC, Platinum Games, id Software will do.”

The same as any corporation does, by capitulation. No corporation will risk their bottom line to expose injustice from our government, so they might as well be already capitulated.

    1. Depends entirely on how it’s designed.

If they just attempt some generic PVP then sure…but there’s 1000 other things they could do.

      1. like what ? a battle Royal ?, remember the core part of the game is being some kind of Survival Horror, there are never enough bullets, you cant kill everything and there is always a depressing story and ambient. How that can become something in a multiplayer ?

    1. That’s dumbest thing ever, co-op is multiplayer, but just the PvE without PvP, and can never be done competently as “Coop Single Player”, no half assed bolt on mode has ever been done well.

The secondary, and/or tertiary mode is always a feeble effort, because its been a bolt on afterthought. If Coop is focus, single player either bots the missing players (L4D), or removes them with little thought (Dead Island), or effort.

If co-op is bolted onto a SPG focus, the second player is not impactful, and is treated as an NPC, often not getting experience, or even sharing the Loot.

Each mode SPG, Co-op, and Full Multiplayer, should be treated as seperate games, to be worth doing at all, and dividing dev effort over, three game types. for simultaneous relese, simply takes devs away from their main focus, unless dev time is massively increased.

Usually the added modes are given no extra dev resources, which means all the modes suffer, from less polish. Remember when all SPGs were forced to have mediocre mutiplayer, and/or co-op just to tick a marketing box, they were all making the SPG worse for useless modes that most SPG players didn’t even want.

CDPR has the right idea, make the SPG, then make a separate MPG (or Co-op) game using same assets, then sell it as a new cheaper game due to assets reporposing., for those that want it, and leave the single player game as a standalone, with only single player expansions.

Think how few MPGs get a good campaign, even the few that do, get incredibly short campaigns, that few SPG focussed gamers will even buy, because the modes purely a secondary box ticking marketing mode, and SPG players don’t care..

Each Game type has unique features that can only be good, if they are the only focus of the dev team, any divisions lead to the second fiddle being out of tune.

      1. Bro it doesn’t need to be perfect. People just want to play games with friends that’s why modders are doing this on their own time for games such as doom (which i tried and had lots of fun).

        Who cares about the rest.

  2. Hate to break it to you man but they said in an interview a while back, after the game released, that they will be launching all their titles exclusively through epic from now on. It’s a very lucrative deal for these Kock Suckers and they LOVE MONEY. They don’t care whether or not you play their game as long as they get paid. If developers/publishers could find a way to make money and not have you play the game, they would definitely take that option. 4A Games Have showed us this.

    1. “It’s a very lucrative deal for these Kock Suckers and they LOVE MONEY.”

Money is good and they should get it any way they can, so long as the way they make money doesn’t kill my chances at pirating their future games (console exclusive, Always online or intrusive DRM).

  3. “Tbh doubt how many conslow people will play these FPS titles. They all are addicted to soy games. Esp Gaystation 5 fans.”

CCP money could make these games PC exclusive and shut console off for good, but you all be hatin’.

    1. “CCP money could make which games PC exclusive ??”

If they can prevent games from releasing on Steam or others, they could prevent the games from releasing on consoles as well, but developers are aware of backlash and just take EGS money and release it on consoles.

“Gears of War was made by Epic games those f4ggots said PC will never get a release”

Because Microsoft woudn’t allow it, funny why they coudn’t just outright say it.

“M$ could’ve ordered the GoW IP on PC like MCC but they never cared when Cuck of War 5 was released. ”

Epic doesn’t own the franchise, never did, so why are you talking about this?

“CCP is not going to dictate anything, the z0g which runs this system won’t give them full control of these markets.”

That’s right, one of the reasons i don’t give a rat @$$ about their activities. So why do you care?

        1. I apologize for the error, no need to call names, what i meant to say is that their ownership was with strings attatched, they could never release Gears games on PC of their own free will, nor could they disclose these facts and that’s the core of the resentment (reminds me of Alan Wake devs talking bs excuses like “Alan Wake” was made to be played on a Big TV maaan”).

Similar story as with Halo btw, created by Bungie, published by Microsoft, maybe Epic was smarter and cashed out of their rights, but who cares, people would like to play the games on PC and that’s always on Microsoft.

          1. Oh LOL, I remember that Alan Wake BS excuse. Dug it up:
            https://archive.vn/m11rr
At least they didn’t insult their customers like CliffyB did when they wanted Gears 2 on PC. “PC gamers who aren’t running shitboxes are pirates.”
https://archive.vn/BiM3H He got what he deserved when Lawbreakers and Radical Heights bombed and he had to close his studio, Boss Key Productions.

          2. Those bs excuses are probably related to “non disclosure agreement” or some bs like that, they coudn’t just say they where under exclusivity contract with microsoft, and since Remedy still got the rights of Alan Wake they ported the game first chance they got. And yeah CliffyB is an a$$hole and Epic was lucky to can his a$$.

  4. Just finished Sam’s Story DLC today and main campaign a couple days ago. This series is one of the most boring and mediocre game series in my opinion. Graphics is nice but all the rest is really subpar – dialogs, story, gameplay (sluggish movement and crap gunplay). Not to mention the console FOV three games in a row. You can change values in a .ini files which I did for all 3 games but every time it breaks those boring cutscenes.

To Western audiences it might seem novel but be sure it’s only because it’s an aesthetic change due to different geographical region the story takes place in as well as Russian accent and Soviet aesthetic.
Glukhovsky’s drivel just proves that humanity in 2020 is on a major degradation trip as a species.

I think this game would feel better if it were a TV show.

    1. I agree with you on the gunplay
it’s a great series but rather inconsistent in select few areas. also there’s very little novelty about how they tell their stories, how they design their worlds, and how they develop their gameplay mechanics.
but all in all a great series

    2. “To Western audiences it might seem novel but be sure it’s only because it’s an aesthetic change due to different geographical region the story takes place in as well as Russian accent and Soviet aesthetic.”

What’s wrong with novelty and a different aesthetic? Most FPS games play mostly the same so all they had to do is change the atmosphere a little bit and Metro series did to great sucess.

      1. What’s wrong with novelty and a different aesthetic?

Nothing. To me as a Russian the game is boring and pretty bad because after the dissolution of USSR I can see all those dilapidated powerplants and buildings with my own eyes. Keep in mind that no nuclear war happened but the result of bringing capitalism here is basically the same. I was literally forcing myself to play it. In short I see a lot of the content that’s in that game in my real life and I’m fed up with it as it is.

Besides the dialog which is swarming with Russian convict jargon is just grating to hear. Imagine a Western game where most of the dialog is written by the likes of black boys from the hood that are active members of different gangs.

    3. You are correct, Metro doesn’t feel like CoD or Doom, but that’s on purpose. These aren’t first person shooters, they are first person simulators.

With the Metro series, it’s about immersion into the environment and story.

Play all three on Ranger/Survival Hardcore with reduced or no HUD and you’ll see what I mean.

      1. Play all three on Ranger/Survival Hardcore with reduced or no HUD and you’ll see what I mean.

Why would I do that? I’m not into masochism.

  5. We already have a MP game in the vein of Metro, it’s called Tarkov, so don’t even bother adding to it, 4A/

Also don’t even think of going EGS exclusive with the next game or you’re on the blacklist forever

    1. >blacklisting the only non-pozzed studio in the universe because muh steam badges
you can play as a black wamman on steam then

  6. Next-Gen Metro game will still focus on Epic Exclusivity (even though they use their own proprietary engine) Denuvo DRM & having some type of controversial monetization scheme.

    1. Last game was Epic Exclusive, but didn’t have Denuvo nor monetization scheme (or maybe it did? thankfully my version doesn’t come with those).

      1. The EGS and Steam versions had Denuvo. It was removed when it was added to GoG.

To be clear, it was on the Steam version, if you managed to preorder it before it was sniped by EGS.

  7. Writing a lead which essentially repeats what the announcement below says is bad writing. Dear author please don’t make me read the info twice. I’m sure there are various techniques in journalism to avoid that

  8. They should move on and do something else. With last one, although still decent, it clearly shows they streaching things up. Don’t milk it to death ffs.
