Marvel’s Avengers reportedly caused a significant financial loss for Square Enix

Marvel’s Avengers is the latest third-person, action role-playing brawler game. It’s based on the Marvel Comics, and is mainly inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The title features both single-player and multiplayer modes. However, the main focus of the game is the multiplayer.

So it looks like another “live service” game has underperformed once again. Based on the financial results briefing of Square Enix, Marvel’s Avengers probably caused a significant financial loss for the publisher.

The total cost of the game is approximately 170-190 million dollars. So far, the game have sold around 3 million units, which apparently are not enough.

This translates to a loss of approximately 60 million dollars. Which is a fair amount of money, even for a huge company such as Square Enix.

Outriders is the following big release from Square Enix for next year. Let’s see if that game performs better. With any luck, the company will learn from their mistakes and do better in the future.

Thanks TechRaptor.

  1. Couldn’t care less. SE has been dead to me for years. I don’t want them to go bankrupt but if they do so be it.

I always thought “movie” games were bad. This game has had probably one of the best treatment in terms of man power and time since i think disney wouldn’t let anything half-made be released (brand damage) and look what it did.

    It’s sad really.

    My 2 cents.

  2. I don’t feel bad at all. Game looks like their intention was to cash in on the license and sell people a garbage game. The writing is on the wall. This game looks like a pile of dung. I feel bad for the 3m people that bought it. You could see from the beginning this game looked like game from the ps3 era. Garbage game with a popular license slapped on it to trick and rip people off. Glad people are awake and could see right through it. I wouldn’t even pay $10 for this game. It looks like hot garbage trash

      1. Well considering how much they changed the tone of the game to include Raycism apartheid in the last game i kind of don’t care anymore.

  3. Well it came out a year after Endgame and didn’t even have any of the film likenesses (as far as I know). Two big mistakes, in my opinion.

    1. Marvel post endgame movies still sold well, but that doesn’t translate to more video game sales, or at least more than 3 million.

          1. Hey man. No idea on Billy, I’d imagine he turned over our data to the feds and left. The comments were the only good part of that site anyway though and we have something close enough here, which is nice.

          2. Lmao, who knows, tough i find it strange how the site got “sold” or something right before the election. His articles on censorship was fine, but the way he sugarcoated Blumpf’s administration own censorship efforts and used his contributors to pump out shill articles for Blumpf disgusted me. I left the site by the time he ditched Disqus.

  4. GOOD! Let restricting Spider-Man to the ShitStation work for you now faqqots (and I’m not even thinking of playing this piece of shiit even for free).

    1. I think you are confused, Spider man was made by Insomniac games and published by Sony. Squenix has nothing to do with that game.

      1. The Spiderman character in The Avengers game is only available on the PS4 version, but i think it dont even worth a f*ck to give

  5. 2012 square enix was my favorite dev/pub because they didn’t do much ports they did straight PC builds. then come 2015 where they went DRM crazy and panicked before last gen was up and decided that they wanted loo boxes in everything. Killed off my all time favorite game nosgoth in 2016. That company is so dead to me.

    1. Holy hell, haven’t heard the game Nosgoth in ages. That game is pretty much dead I guess, I liked it back in the day.

    1. AMAZING ISNT IT?

Why should game like this cost so much? Get rid of the licensing and the online features and its half the cost.

    2. Funny how they lost all this money despite monetising the game to hell… I mean I thought MTX was needed to keep games going ….but yet here that didn’t happen

  6. This is where your anti SJW bias kick in, whenever you see some failure you quickly point it out the “probable” cause being SJWism. Here’s some facts:

    1- They sold up to 3 million units up till now, good number when it comes to games;
2- Bad management seems to be the key here, unless you can prove that their Ethics Dpt inflates the price of making the game, then you can’t explain sh!t.
3- Their next gen Deus Ex is trash, Deus Ex always have trashy Alex Jones elements, but at least they had balls to name j3wish bankers instead of making games based on Apartheid bs.

      1. They made it quite obvious on the next gen Deus ex with the talk radio guy, and for all the talk about Deus Ex being “right” about the future i think their blindspot is transhumanism and a fascist style military takeover.
It doesn’t make much sense since they can easily kill augmented agents with killswitches, but in the case of more advanced agents such as Denton, they made the killswitch less advanced for some reason, and a open military state is a hollywood fantasy picked by conspiracy theorists that thinks nazi germany as the pinnacle of distopian society (the game mentions a list of 6 million people to go to FEMA camps, an obvious allusion to holocaust narrative).

        1. Being that Deus Ex is a game about conspiracy theories, their conspiracies got progressively worse, from Illuminatti cabal to systemic racism and white privilege, and it’s not like Deus Ex sold well enough to warrant more games, so yeah, what a shame.

          1. Oh absolutely…the apartheid comparison on paper was…interesting, the execution was awful (not to mention that you can tell Makind Divided was rushed and unfinished with poor sequel bait). I mean, the first augmented and the source for it is a guy called Adam…not subtle at all. Still, with all those issues i prefer a third game to conclude that story over this GASS with cosplayers of the Avengers and your token failed superhero as a protagonist.

          2. Mankind Divided was actually supposed to be 1 full game. But it got cut into 2 because square put their dirty fingers in it.

          3. Deus Ex suffers from X-Men syndrome, it’s basically people with super powers (or in his case military enhanced limbs) having to deal with “RAYCISS” normal people, i hate that stuff. They should have done a Deus Ex in reverse, have you play as a normal man having to outsmart military augmented people/robots, it could be an interesting concept.

  7. Get woke go broke, though in this case seems more like get greedy go broke, people absolutely hated micro transaction on this one.

  8. I have to agree. Hopefully they learn that they need to make a solid, fulfilling game instead of shoveling licensed garbage. This game was so rushed and felt/played like a free to play game.

    1. the fact you say “ill have to agree” once again shows you have bad tastes. You shouldnt have to agree you should be THIS GAME IS A PIECE OF SHT!

  9. they ditched tomb raider and deus ex for this, because deus ex didnt sell.

Get fcked, game is awful, every update change log is a freaking novel, the game is a grindfest looter shooter but also scripted to death like cod, you play most of the game with kamala khan who is awful. Hulk is a joke you need to do power attacks to fight enemies with shields…YOU ARE HUL EVERY ATTACK IS A POWER ATTACK. Ironman is a joke, there is no space to fly around so you fly skating around, its lame and spiderman is ps4 exlusive and its still not out.

BOOOO you ditched deus ex for this.

    1. ” its lame and spiderman is ps4 exlusive and its still not out.”

Spiderman is from Sony and dev Insomniac.

“BOOOO you ditched deus ex for this.”

      “because deus ex didnt sell.”

      Go figure…

          1. A quick search and you will find that they don’t own spiderman rights outside the movies. Bye.

  10. That is because people wanted a game featuring MCU Marvel’s Avengers, not Wish .com Avengers and suicide bomber Plastic Man.

    1. It’s not like Square asks costumers how they want to invest their dollars, even a sure bet like FF7 remake fans needed to beg for decades.

  11. Much deserved this game was the embodiment of all the negative new “features” of the last 12 years of gaming.

  12. One of the most cynical, lazy, soulless dumpsterfire cashgrabs under the sun. And Square knew it too since they preemptively wh*red out the game to every possible company out there. The spiderman deal with Sony was particularly disgusting.

    1. Considering how they wanted to distance Deus Ex from Illuminati conspiracies to more modern, pallatable conspiracies like systemic racism and white privilege, i say good riddance and what a rotten way to die.

      1. Exactly right… But I do hope someone can pick up the franchise and do it right and go back to the illuminati stuff. They were on the right track in Human Revolution.

  13. That title. That glorious title.

Couldn’t happen to a bigger s**t turd of a company. F**k SquareEnix, and f**k this pile of trash game.

  14. I really, really wanna see ubi fail, and fail hard, i really hate this sh!tty company from every inch of my soul… ones, was beloved from everyone.

  15. They have golden goose FFXIV which prints money yet it gets minimal budget and they put money on crap like this and mobile games

  16. Channel 6 News:

“Once again Publisher doesn’t deliver what gamers want and instead releases sh*t that gamers don’t want. Sales are poor. Publisher scratches head and says that they don’t know what went wrong”.

  17. 180 million to make and you cant even get MCU Avengers face to put on your game?that idealism for stay true to comics cost $60 million 😀 also if they rename the title to “Kamala Khan:The Game it will sell more…

  18. Just went to Square’s website to see what they’ve made previously. I was aware they’re a game company obviously however based on their history (games for sale link on their page) I wouldnt think they are the best suited for an Avengers game.
