Quake 2 Retexture Project screenshots 3

Here are some new screenshots from the Quake 2 Retexture and Relight Mod

Modder ‘diolator’ has released some new screenshots from the Quake 2 Retexture and Relight Mod. These screenshots showcase some of the new high quality textures and the new lighting system that this mod will feature.

In case you weren’t aware of, Quake 2 Retexture Project is a project that will feature more than 200 textures. These textures were created from scratch and aim to be aesthetically similar to the original ones. Moreover, these new textures will have PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials. Additionally, the shaders that have been used in this project support Albedo, Roughness, Specular, Parallax, Normal mapping, though there is currently no support for a “metallness” shader.

The modder will also implement some fake Global Illumination effects in order to improve the game’s lighting. Not only that, but diolator plans to add some fresh bright lights in order to enhance the looks of some levels.

Now I’m pretty sure that some of you will be wondering why you should use this instead of Quake 2 RTX. And… well.. the answer is quite simple. This project does not come with a huge performance hit, meaning that it will run on a wide range of PC systems. Furthermore, this pack works on both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards.

In short, and while this project may not be as advanced as Quake 2 RTX, it can run on a wider range of PC configurations. Thus, it will be ideal for those that want to replay Quake 2, with better graphics, on systems that are not capable of running Quake 2 RTX.

Enjoy the screenshots and stay tuned for more!

    1. because it doesnt have a good singleplayer. Its a sequence of disparate maps with no rime or reason or structure to them. Quake 2 is an infinitely superior singleplayer experience, that actually feels kinda modern in a way. Objectives, more sophisticated scripting, hubs, the sense of place that it has.

Its much more enjoyable to be played today.

      1. Quake 1 had a more bespoke, lovecraftian atmosphere.
Quake II’s benefit came from advancement in game-design but was pretty generic.

      2. Quake 1 has far better core gameplay. None of Quake 2’s enemies really challenge your ability to dodge or circle strafe. I replayed Quake 2 on Nightmare about a year or two ago, and it feels like a hybrid between an old school shooter and cover shooter due to the amount of hitscan. It’s also has the an incredibly boring and generic art style and enemy roster, something you definitely cannot say about Quake 1.

Where Quake 1 really suffers is the level design, as you said. The development cycle was incredibly rushed, and the levels really suffered for it (especially the later ones). That said, play a mod like Arcane Dimensions, which has some of the best FPS levels ever made, and you’ll see how much better Quake 1’s gameplay truly is.

        1. Beside the last chapter, Quake’s lvl design always felt good for me, it’s the old id Soft, even rushed, we have to consider the talent they have for lvl design, i agree for all the rest, Q1 is way better than Q2 in almost every aspect

    2. There are several Quake overhauls, texture packs and stuff in existence. The most recent one is Quake 1.5, I think. By comparison, the Q2 mod scene is much smaller than that of Q1 – it’s just not promoted by the media for some reason.

    3. Try Quake 1.5, it’s a “Brutal” treatment for Q1, or for a vanilla-like experience try Quake HD Remix which is a compilation of graphical overhauls for the entire game (textures, models, effects, shaders, lighting, sound) and 100% faithful to the original running on DarkPlaces engine
