System Shock Remake Unreal Engine 4 Demo Screenshots

As we’ve already reported, Nightdive Studios released a new demo of System Shock Remake. This new demo was live for 48 hours, was based on the Unreal Engine 4 build, and gave us an idea of what the team aims to achieve. Since the demo is no longer available, we’ve decided to share some screenshots from it.

In order to capture these screenshots, we used an Intel i9 9900K with 16GB of DDR4 at 3600Mhz. Naturally, we’ve paired this machine with an NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti. We also used Windows 10 64-bit and the GeForce 441.41 driver. MSI Afterburner was also active so that it can give you an idea of the in-game performance at 2560×1440.

Unfortunately, the demo has a number of bugs and issues. For instance, we could not enable 4K resolutions no matter what we were doing. In fact, the game was constantly crashing the moment we tried to change some of its graphics settings. Thankfully, we were able to fix this by editing the demo’s .INI file (which also allowed us to unlock the framerate).

Though it may not look as polished as the Unity Engine demo, this Unreal Engine 4 build still looks great. Nightdive Studios basically ported the textures, map and 3D models from the Unity Engine Demo to Unreal Engine 4. Moreover, the team changed and improved some particles effects.

Now the good news here is that the “pixelated” textures are still here. This is something that gives the game a retro feel and I really hope that Nightdive will keep using this visual style. However, the demo had mediocre animations. This is something that the team needs to overhaul as soon as possible. Hit detection was also not on par with the Unity Engine demo. Not only that, but there were major stuttering issues.

But anyway, enjoy the following screenshots!

    1. I disagree. I strongly prefer the graphics in the UE4 demo. They are more sharp and saturated (instead of washed out and bloomy), which is kinda reminiscent of the original’s sharp look, and not BioShock. I feel like leaving the lighting as plain as in the original System Shock doesn’t work that well with modern graphics. Making it a bit darker and putting more emphasis on those small old-school lights found on various appliances makes for a nice and atmospheric translation of 90’s cyberpunk feel into modern graphics.

  1. i played it, awful perfomance and the more you play the worse it gets at some point it was a slideshow, you cant actually finish the level the exit doesnt work, there are so many missing items, weapons and enemies, no cyberspace either, the game is years from being playable.

    1. I guess that’s what happens when you switch engines almost midway into production and you lack the finalized vision of what your game is supposed to be like.

      1. you could add more to that, eg laying off people and changing it or whatever, but thats not the point, the point is that its years from being finished after all those years its developed. I went back and played the original and there are so many stuff missing.

  2. I loved it. It was so much better than I was expecting. Sure a bit dark, but totally playable and atmospheric. To be honest I have not really seen anything like it. It still retained this pixilated graphics that looked so fanastic in 4k. As an original kickstarter backer I have been worried about this project. After checking out the demo all my fears are gone. Its crazy how it retains so much of the feeling and look of the original game. I mean… down to even enemy placement

  3. Sadly I didn’t get a chance to play this when they offered it. But if what I hear is true, about the performance, I’d rather wait. Sucks though, I was looking forward to try it. I misheard and I thought it would be offered for 12 days.
