CD Projekt RED on multiplayer and microtransactions

CD Project RED has already confirmed that there will be no microtransactions in Cyberpunk 2077. After that they announced a multiplayer mode for the game, which will come after the game has been released.

Recently a financial teleconference took place and hold by Piotr Nielubowitz, CDPR’s Vice President of finances and Adam Kicinski, CDPR CEO. In there you can listen about monetization in the multiplayer.

The multiplayer is in early development and right now we have no idea when it will be ready. While this news might be alarming, I think it is way too early to come to any conclusions. Hopefully CDPR will stay true to their customers, as they’ve done so far.

You can listen to the financial teleconference here.

  1. Chris: there will be no microtransactions in Cyberpunk 2077
Also Chris: it is way too early to come to any conclusions

      1. The current priority for CDPR is selling as much merchandise bearing the Cyberpunk 2077 logo as possible before release (collector’s editions, steelbooks, jackets, shirts, framed art etc.) simultaneously travelling around the world and showing supposedly a year old demo during private shows while the majority of their customers get zilch.

    1. They’d be mad no to, especially given the current market trends. We may not like them but just look at how much money they generate for companies, it shocks the hell out of me.

  2. I remember when the game was advertised as single player only. Now there’s a ton of downgrades, they’ve added a multiplayer (that no one asked) and a bunch of microtransactions.
“B-but it’s just cosmetics” say the Youtuber sellouts like YongYea.

    1. I have no idea how parrots like YongOUT have so many subscribers to begin with – the dude does nothing more than reading the articles in such a monotonous manner that turns watching paint dry into a riveting experience.

    2. it doesnt even look like it did initially, it looks like gta v with robotic arms. Different visual style and they messed with the lore.

    3. If it’s cosmetics, i don’t see the problem. Sure it’s not ideal but the reality is, these companies make so much money off MT that they are never going away.

Also if someone doesn’t have the willpower to buy bullshit digital goods. It’s their problem

    4. I’ll take multiplayer since I tend to be good at it. I love Cyberpunk and want every reason to stay in the lore. Hope they make something for vr.

  3. Monetization is latin for microtransactions. Take off your fanboy glasses. They lied, again. Another broken promise. They said they wanted to follow the RockStar model.

  4. I’ve never played multiplayer computer games and have no interest in starting now. As long as they make a really good single player game, I will be very happy.

  5. Adam Kicinski, CEO, November 2017,
“No hidden catch, you get what you pay for – no bullshit, just honest gaming like with Wild Hunt. We leave greed to others.”

John Mamais, head of Krakow Office, October 2019,
“I think it’s a bad idea to do microtransactions after you release a game… if everyone hates it, why would we do something like that and lose the goodwill of our customers?”

Piotr Nielubowitz, VP of finances and Adam Kicinski, CEO, November 2019,
Microtransactions confirmed for post-launch MP mode.

    1. One way for CDPR to save face in light of those statements would be to release the multiplayer mode as a standalone F2P experience. Kicinski reportedly declined the opportunity to rule that out so it could happen.

    2. Finally someone come to their senses that CDPR are just PR flak all these while. Either rabid fanboy keep shielding them or possibly paid PR keyboard warriors. Wake up folks.

      1. I wouldn’t go so far as to say CDPR is nothing but PR piffle but they’ve certainly been guilty of overdoing it on many past occasions with their now very tired PR shtick of presenting themselves as being holier than thou modern-day saints here to show the righteous path to salvation.

Their self-appointed fanboy army can be rather vicious when folk dare to highlight some of the questionable actions CDPR has been guilty of in the past. For me, the CDPR facade began to crack in the run-up to The Witcher III’s launch,

        – changing GOG’s regional pricing policy right before pre-orders went live
        – censoring & banning folk on their forum re: the game’s downgrade
        – spitting the dummy at Green Man Gaming
        – obfuscating for months over showing the PC version at Ultra settings
        – saying in a Eurogamer interview that they couldn’t see the downgrade
        – misrepresenting the product by having pre-downgrade screenshots on the Steam and GOG store pages throughout the pre-order period and after its launch

        1. A friend of mine is working at CDP, he told me that the game would struggle a lot to be profitable, it costed 3 times more than TW3 + DLCs, the preorders are far lower, and they’re afraid despite all the hype.
Anyway kudos for them to let the game release on all stores, and not going exclusive, even with their own platform, i think the mistake they did was to shot EA about all those microtransactions to act like the good cop of the story, karma’s b*tch i guess, even tho they’re right…
Also he told me that if they go the microtransactions way, it will be only for the MP and 100% cosmetic, not so bad, just hope the SP is good, don’t care about the MP anyway

          1. Interesting. With GOG making pretty much zero profit for them then CDP sure as hell need Cyberpunk 2077 to be a major commercial success so to keep the company afloat. So it doesn’t surprise me in the least that Kicinski elected to not rule out the game’s MP mode being released as a F2P standalone product.

          2. Considering the SP as the big part of the cake, all we have to do is to ignore the MP like it never existed, anyway we were supposed to pay 60$ a SP only game, now it’s 60$ for SP + a useless MP, that doesn’t change anything for those like us who just want the SP part

  6. There will be microtransactions. No matter how much people b*tch about it, these companies make way too much money to not do it.

Now the goal is to make it as least scumbag as possible. Which is an easy thing to do. Only cosmetic MT and it’s not constantly in you’re face to buy like on mobile. If someone doesn’t have the will power to not buy fake digital bullshit, that’s their problem

  7. ok but on the other side they said .MT will be added some time after release

+ i am not defending the game . i will sh*t on it if its good but dont sh*t on it until its in your hands cuz the game they did before this was one of the best game out there so … yeahh,,,,

  8. Not going to freak out about this because I don’t see any reason yet to throw CDPR under the bus. A certain number of people have been complaining about CDPR since The Witcher 3. I still have a very good feeling about Cyperpunk 2077.
