Remedy’s Control is an absolutely amazing game. Still, a lot of PC fans were put off the moment 505 Games revealed that the game would be coming exclusively on the Epic Games Store. However, today we have a glimpse at the amount that Epic Games paid for that exclusivity deal.
According to Digital Bros, the parent company of 505 Games, Epic Games paid them 9.49 million euro by June 30th. Moreover, 55% of that payment went to 505 Games.
Now there is a chance that this amount of money is not solely for Control’s exclusivity deal. For instance, the report does not specifically mentions Control. Taking a look at the Epic Games Store, we can see four games from 505 Games. These are: Control, ABZU, Last Day of June and Journey to the Savage Planet. Let’s also not forget that ABZU and Last Day of June were offered for free on EGS a while back.
You can find the full statement from Digital Bros here.
So yeah, it appears that this offer was too good for 505 Games and Digital Bros to pass up. This also shows how much money Epic Games is willing to pay for exclusivity deals. Therefore, we are really curious about the amount of money that Epic Games paid for Borderlands 3.
Now since Borderlands 3 and Control have sold well on EGS (at least according to their publishers), we can assume that Epic Games will secure more exclusivity deals. So yeah, it will be interesting to see what other triple-A games will now ditch Steam over EGS.
UPDATE:
Digital Bros has included an additional revenue table in its report. In this table, we can clearly see that the company received 9.49 million euro only for Control. Do note that by June 30th, Control wasn’t out. Therefore, Epic Games paid that huge amount for Control’s exclusivity deal.

I belive it’s a protagonist of CONTROL.
She is indeed, her name is Jesse Faden. The screenshot is from an early cutscene.
with those amounts of money, of course the publishers are ready to jump ship and go to EGD dropping Steam, but it is all about the money and has nothing to do with the devs wanting a better revenue distribution or whatever. They just wanted the payout.
Well, yeah, money is what allows developers to make games. It’s not bad to want money like this. In the case of smaller studios, it could be a big deal.
What are you? A communist? *snicker*
Great contradicting your yourself there. Devs should allow themselves to be ripped off by Valve in the name of Steam Stockholm Syndrome I see.
That’s a little silly imo, Steam and it’s features are amazing, and PC gaming would not be the same without it. Steam can charge 30% I think that’s fair. However, I still see the attraction of lowering the cut to 12% while skimping on some features. I don’t mind that either, because that immediately makes the industry more profitable and we get more games on average, especially indies.
Yeah, I should be the one being ripped off instead of the devs and publishers, some with much more money than Valve, who had a decade and a half to make a better digital distribution system.
It’s only fair I use an unfinished store and launcher that datamines me to China, is giving profits to China and is mostly owned by Chinese to play some dozen or so sh**ty games.
It’s not my fault companies like Microsoft and EA were too blind to not make an investement on digital storefronts sooner and instead provided half assed services which were worse than DRM free physical or piracy.
Valve continues to rip off developers and publishers by great strides. It’s got to the point where they’ve started branching off into their own launchers because Valve takes too much revenue splits and *forces* developers to fund features that they have little to no interest in (trading cards, forums, retail store Steam wallet purchases, and the likes).
“Datamined by the Chinese” is a rich statement too. It’s clear that you don’t know how technology (nor business) works, considering you think that Tencent has controlling interest in Epic Game (they don’t) and that it would have been enough to compromise their business model as a whole. Spreading unfounded nonsense is kind of the thing with the EGS-Hating Crowd. You can’t quite come up with anything better than lies at this point.
Valve rip off developers and publishers? Many developers openly admits that they’d didn’t make it without Steam. Discord’s own distribution services offered even lower revenue than Epic, and it went down. Can you explain this? Because without customers, there would be no sustainable services.
The only person doesn’t know how technology (nor business) works is you. Anyone with sane mind and over 2 digits of IQ knows if a company owns 49% of stocks, you know they indirectly own you. Tencent purposely let loose other 51% stocks just because to avoid US laws and not making Epic a Chinese company. Every god damn people knows that. Tencent is owned by Chinese Communist party, and Tim is a god damn false front of Chinese government.
*forces* developers to fund features? Last time I checked, Epic was doing exactly that. They forcing developers to make features for them, such as save cloud and pre-load. Trading cards on Steam is optional, and how do you think absence of forum is a good thing?
EGS-Hating Crowd? At least they have logic and dignity. Stop your nonsense about “Ebul Steam ripping off poor developers and publishers!”. Any sane person knows Steam contributed for PC Gaming Industry than any other companies. I ain’t no Steam lover, Valve and Steam has their own problem but it’s nothing compared to the behemoth that is Epic.
and many others wouldnt make a cent if they sold on steam . hence why the guys that can afford to, arent listed on steam. 30% of a cut is insane in the digital age just to be on their store
you guys talk about privacy yet im sure you all have smartphones and use social media, so if you did care about those then start there please
and who cares who owns the company? do you research the CEOs before buying a game or what? and tencent isnt owned by china whered you hear that? hell their stock dropped like 40% because the chinese government didnt let them license more games, and youre here saying theyre owned by them? guess that shows the amount of research you guys do
btw im all for steam, i just think the 30% cut is just insane in this day and age. i havent checked the EGS yet, ive heard it doesnt even have forums which is very sad (nor reviews nor all those things ive come to get accustomed too) but hey competition is good, hopefully in time EGS picks it up instead of just outright buying everything (which isnt a sound long term strategy) because weve seen how other online stores do no matter how user friendly they are (see GoG) and its not good
30% cut is industry standard of digital services for decades. Sony, MS, Nintendo, Steam and GoG all requires 30% cut. And unlike Sony, MS and Nintendo, Steam does not require users to pay subscription fees. Steam offers free servers and all kinds of services to developers and publishers without additional fee, unlike Sony and Nintendo. Just to be on their store? Steam is beyond store, it’s services. Those servers ain’t gonna cost themselves.
And I don’t use smartphones of social media.
And yeah, some people cares who owns company. Just like me, who cares that CEO of Tencent is one of the highest representative of China’s National People’s Congress. You surely does not know how China and their politics works, aren’t you? Their CEO is a god damn Congressman of China, and he’s representative of the Chinese party.
China has all their rights to axe out any members or employees of Tencent include CEO, and China government has their rights to directly involve Tencent’s operative, management and board of direct if they want. If your god damn CEO is a high rank party member, they own you.
And no, this is not competition, this is invasion to the industry, with foreign funds. Discord’s distribution services offered 10% cut but didn’t survive. Without customers, there is no sustainable services.
are you seriously comparing steam to nintendo / sony / microsoft?? really?? the guys that make the CONSOLE that they sell for a LOSS?
i dont care about the politics of china why should i? i am an “amateur” investor though and tencent normally gets beaten up by the chinese government so i really doubt their one and the same. obviously very rich people are mixed up in politics, that happens everywhere. ever heard of lobbying in the US? but again, this seems irrelevant
You should care, Especially if you want to have this argument. The simple, “I don’t care” doesn’t absolve you from criticism, judgement or duty. That is a child’s argument, “I don’t care”… One day, you’re gonna wished you had cared. That’s the problem with this generation of people, “I don’t care”, for some reason y’all believe that rights & priviledged are a MUST HAVE & nothing/no one was sacrificed in order to enjoy your “luxury of not caring”. No Biche, it’s a commodity, which you must fight to keep. So I suggest, you start caring.
One day you will wake up and wonder, “what happened to my rights & priviledges”? By that time, it will be too late. You will be thrown into a war all over again, in order to get them back. START CARING YOU FUQ!!!
talk about escalating the argument there. from not caring who owns a video game company to me being thrown into a world wide war… not sure how that made sense in your head
and again, from the little i do know from them, it seems to be more than you do who apparently does care.
“Starting in March 2018, a de facto freeze was placed on the approval of new games by the Chinese government, a move that hit Tencent’s profits hard. The result of this freeze was that by August 2018, Bloomberg reported that Tencent had suffered a record stock plunge wiping out more than $135 billion off its market value”
should i start investigating all big game companies in case they have someone from the US government as well? i dont wanna get thrown into a world wide war after all 🙁
They started branching off because they’re greedy a*sholes that want a bigger profit margins in the long term and have the money to do such a move, if that wasn’t the case they would havr moved to the Epic Fail Store instead of doing their own thing, Steams revenue split is less than retail and has now gone down to 20%.
The rest of your comment is nothing but deflection and blatant misinfo considering Tencent owns 50% of Epic Games.
You’re an idiotic pretensious asshat, the irony of you telling me I don’t know what I’m talking about when you’re as ignorant as they come.
Thanks Captain Obvious.
You do realize that better revenue distribution is mo money?
So another big seller for epic like Borderlands 3 is!
Epic/Tencent are so rich that they are buying thousands of copies themself !! BTW there’s no proof of these supposedly good sales!
Shills don’t need any proof.
I downloaded 505’s ABZU when it was free on epic, looking forward to more.
Congrats, you got a game that the rest of us played three years ago
For free! While you paid.
Oh no, my 2 euros!
No I pirated it because it had Denuvo in it.
Don’t be such a moron, everything is free on Epic.
Epic, make piracy great again.
“since Borderlands 3 and Control have sold well on EGS”
Owwww! What a flying kick in the crotch for steam Trolls! Another amazing boycott!
Tiananmen Square 1989

It’s a spell to banish Tencent. Here is an even more powerful version of the spell:

Yeah, again, sells backed up by nothing. If they sold so good, why don’t they show the actual numbers on the game’s page? Control was already cracked, BL3 will be also cracked soon.
True that. If there is one thing you can almost guarantee about game devs/publishers is that they love to brag about their sales figures when things are going well for them.
Squirrel Brain Is Back in Effect i see. Where have you been?
Are you being paid per comment?
Hence for why Don Quixote is Fernando Diaz’s sock account.
At least Steam fanboys do it for free, lol.
Are you aware that all your comments are fanboy this, and fanboy that, right?
When it comes to Epic vs Steam, p. much. Why be in denial tough?
And what’s the difference between you and a bot who keeps spamming the same nonsense?
Your definition of spamming is faulty and wrong.
How come?
My comments are always on topic. If it does sound repetitive, it is because of the nature of the conversation and the way it unfolds.
Really? On topic? Like yesterday? When i showed that i own the games on Steam, and therefore epic can go screw themselves with their free games? And you calling me a fanboy because i buy my games on the best platform on pc. No, you can only call people fanboys, because that’s your only “argument” against facts.
So the moment a game store manages to have a feature that Steam can’t have you manage to go into a rage defending your favorite company.
What feature has epic store and steam doesn’t? Banning people for buying more games at once doesn’t count.
Exclusive games.
That’s not a feature. Features should be useful to users, and attract them, not make them hate it and leave.
Wrong again. Do you think people would buy a PS4 because of his online service or because of his exclusive games? The games are the main feature buddy, nobody cared what Epic store was until it started offering exclusives.
Don’t compare console exclusives to 3d party games exclusives on PC. Yeah… and them started offering exclusives and buying develpers and games from steam made the majority of pc users to hate them. Very good choice indeed.
I think it was bound to happen, just like PC going digital was bound to happen and Steam had good insight back them. In fact, Steam could had crippled the console market if they offered exclusive services to attract the console audience, like first party devs or even buying exclusivity time like Sony and Epic are doing. In short, Steam lazyness paved the way to ruthless competition from others, but carry on defending and making excuses for them.
Fascinating numbers.
PC gaming has tripled in size since Borderlands 2.
Yet despite that massive increase in total adressable market, Borderlands 3 has only managed to double the peak concurrent players over Borderlands 2.
Amazing anti-logic there. Did that really make sense in your head?
Amazing empty headed response there. Are you really that dumb?
I posted verifiable facts. Sorry you don’t like them.
You posted an dubious statistic (without putting a source) that can be interpreted in various ways.
Steam peak concurrent active users has tripled since 2012.
And?
And what? Don’t ask if you don’t care
You posted an dubious statistic (without putting a source) that can be interpreted in various ways.
He is, i suggest you ignore him, he’s a braindead shill like the other one above, their opinions don’t matter. Besides i don’t trust even for a second borderlands 3 sold double the copies of borderlands 2 despite of how PC market grew, needless to remind you those words are coming out of pitchford’s mouth.
It’s not sales but the top peak users at any time. But yeah, still can’t trust him of course. I’d like to see anyone post some real numbers rather than just spam generic statements on twitter.
” I’d like to see anyone post some real numbers rather than just spam generic statements on twitter.”
Lol, that’s what you did with the PC gaming tripled the size without providing context.
Google it.
Not interested.
Interested enough to whine to me about it
Such a braindead shill even that he got banned at wccftech, lmao
“PC gaming has tripled in size”
Empty buzzword, if we consider that this Triple size makes up for Free to Play games and battle royale bs
And the most popular of which is on the same platform as this game…
So what? Every game needs to be a smashit like Fortnite or PUBG, or else it’s a bust?
Not what I said at all.
I suppose that when a game is so broken in its SP mode then people will play the online MP mode sooner than they otherwise would.
Talking about your IQ?
8/10
Braindead
Being a part of the group think makes you “braindead.”
Well played Epic, I grabbed the repack of Control rather than put up with their anti-consumer BS.
Epic, make piracy great again.

i like that gif
It’s called “Pre-Orders”.
So mutch money for a tech demo….
Ahh, the good ol’ money from Chinese government! This is like Red Dawn but in gaming industry. Those multi-billion Chinese funds ain’t gonna drained soon and we have long trials ahead. Let them sellout, let them choose the quick, easy, dirty money from Tencent instead of from customers. So we can identify which developers and publishers we should avoid. After all, it’s nothing but less backlog games to play in my library.
if they improve their store (add forums and reviews and the such) then its a big win for the consumers. i like steam but i think their 30% cut is too much, and monopolies are never good (and they are one say what you will) but the epic store sucks so far
talking about a “sellout” doesnt make sense when companies are in it for the money. sure some mid sized – small sized companies can make different decisions but big companies exist to make money
The thing is; the only company desperately trying to make monopoly on PC gaming industry by any dirty means here is Epic. Steam does not snatch exclusive deals from GoG or Gamersgate. Steam does not directly interfere to market with funds to make monopoly. How one company can insist the idea of ‘Monopoly is not good’ while they themselves trying to make the monopoly by any means necessary with shady deals behind the curtain?
As companies are in it for money, customers has rights to blame their shady deeds against customers. If they turned their back against customers, breaking promises, gives us less choices and force us to switch our services platform, and blame all things onto us, yes they should be called out as sellout. Saying companies only exist for profit, is like an idea that politicians only exist to be elected. That’s why they all lies, deceit and backstab. There are certain lines that companies or politicians should not across, and that is the people, we the customers. And we have our rights to criticize them.
Before Epic ruthlessly disturbed the PC gaming market, there was calm and healthy competition between Steam, GoG, and lesser distribution services like Uplay, Gamersgate and many others. Then Epic showed upto here with billions and trillions of foreign, Chinese funds and shaken all things up with shady deals behind with publishers. This is against healthy competition and free market, which is direct opposite of what you insist.
The chinese is a valid customer just like yourself, only they have more money and can demand more than you. He who controls the money makes the rules.
The chinese can eat a small d*ck.
The west made what China is today, you guys are in for a rough awakening.
Not my problem. I’m from Europe. Couldn’t care less about America or the dog eaters. But still, fck them.
Global problems are our problems.
Not mine.
i just love this meme
What people (and this article) are not taking in consideration is that the Epic Games Store started pre-orders for Control in late March. On top of that, throughout the month of May, they had the “Mega Sale” that allowed individuals to pre-order the game for $10 off (which Epic had to pay directly to Digital Bros/505 Games for each order).
So no, Epic Games didn’t pay this much for exclusivity. Nice try, though.
How is what you’re saying related to the fact epic bribes greedy devs for exclusivity exactly?
Because the article makes the claim that Epic Games “paid 9.49m Euros” for Control exclusivity. It fails to mention that there are other factors that would imply that they did *not* pay that much for Control exclusivity. They simply paid 505/Digital Bros the amount they deserved for the pre-orders that were purchased between March and June of this year, including the additional money that Epic Games took off of games themselves to encourage purchase (i.e., the Mega Sale). Valve did the same thing for years before they realized it wasn’t profitable (which is also why the Valve sales have been pretty lackluster compared to their first decade’s worth of sales).
It doesn’t matter why they paid them, the thing is they paid them for the exclusivity, and no valve never did anything like this, never, you can try and tell us bs but we know better, that low level bs might work on kotaku dualshocker and other rtarded websites.
So you’re trying to say that Valve has never paid out preorder money to developers or publishers? Holy crap, it’s worse than I originally thought.
There’s nothing proving that this money was for exclusivity. There were months of preorders prior to this payout, including a sale that cost Epic Games at least $10 per copy (as the Mega Sale took $10 USD off of any game over $15).
Sounds like you’re spending too much time on the very sites you’re criticizing. You don’t seem to know what you’re talking about and you’re spreading more “BS” without knowing anything, mate
No, they never did, otherwise it would be known by now. It was for the exclusivity and even if it wasn’t what’s the point in paying bonus money for preorders, it’s the same thing. You don’t know anything actually, you’re inventing stuff from the ground up just to praise EGS and sh** on steam. You got it all wrong, go on another website falafel boy, this here is no place for bad trolls like you. Besides nice alt account you stupid ret4rd, who are you, fernando diaz’s or don quixote’s alt? Or maybe both? fck off here braindead kid.

Goes to show how much you know. You’re literally trying to argue that Valve doesn’t pay developers for copies of games that were sold as preorders. Talking about “braindead” when you’re talking crap about Valve because you don’t even understand how the industry works at all. Good grief, you’re a lost cause. Thanks for proving the point that some people don’t think before they post.
They don’t, but that wasn’t what i was referring to, valve just never pays developers for anything else except copies sold, there’s no bonus for preorders and no exclusivity bribe, because valve never asked anyone to publish their games exclusively on their platform. It’s you having literally 0 idea of how everything works, valve gives 70% of the total revenue from copies sold to devs, and keeps the rest, and that is until a certain number of copies, which should be somewhere around 10 millions iirc, past that they keep either 20 or 25%, i’m not sure, and give the developer the rest. Epic and valve have totally different politics, where one is bribing the other is just offering services and keeping a fair amount for it. Thanks for proving some people just want to have a say even when they have no clue what they’re talking about.
That’s exactly what I mean, though. There’s zero evidence to support that the money outlined in this article is strictly for “exclusivity.” There were pre-orders for “Control” on the Epic Games Store starting March of 2019. Between March and July, there were multiple pre-orders for “Control” (I’m sure) and on top of it, they had to pay $10 per copy more on every pre-order made throughout the month of May (due to the Mega Sale). It’s already been explained to death that the Mega Sale was “at a loss” for all of the companies that took part of it, and Epic Games made sure that the developers wouldn’t suffer for their decision to have $10 USD off of any game in their store.
Again, you’re quick to insult without understanding a word of what I’m saying. Instead, you’ve jumped to name-calling as though it’s something of a “super power” – when it just shows how little you’re reading of my comments. Please, try to grow up a little bit before responding to me again – do some research, stop sucking the proverbial teat of misinformation before coming into a discussion where someone’s actually providing insight.
There’s also 0 evidence otherwise, so what are we gonna do? Epic is shady and i can easily assume this is all true, even because there’s not ever a response from epic, they only tried it once, and they miserably failed, sweeney didn’t know what to do, but now he does, avoid every kind of answer to uncomfortable and annoying questions. Mega sale was a complete fail due to the fact many of those companies never intended for their games to be discounted that much that close to launch, that’s why most of them told epic to put back the normal price for stuff, besides even if what you say is right 10$ per copy to reach even 1 million, they would’ve needed to sell 100.000 preorders, do you really think control achieved that? I’m actually pretty sure it didn’t even achieve half of that, the game has sold poorly and even epic wasn’t that happy with how it all went down, go check for yourself and then come back here having a talk with someone who has the same knowledge and awareness as you.
So in another words we should thank Tim, he paid for us.
So getting it for free is no piracy.
“Tim, he paid for us”
Stunning and brave.
More pathetic excuses from pirates, sad.
More shill corporate apologist comments… sad.
I like when you’re sad. Even your avatar is sulking. Fabulous.

I don’t really care to have multiple store apps, since Steam has been around for so long I have some confidence they will continue to be versus how stores have come and gone with my games like the Windows Games Store prior. I will likely buy Control when it is $30 on steam.
Multiple stores doesnt bother me as long as I can buy all my games and have support for them on that platform. If I cant activate a game on Steam then I wont buy it as I have all my collection on Steam and id like to keep it that way. I owuld however buy from Epic store if the game was cheaper than it is anywhere else and gives me a key so that I can activate it via Steam, like other stores do.
“Epic Games paid 9.49 million euro… for exclusivity deals… for Control”
In common with others here and elsewhere I didn’t even pay Tencents for that game.
Cheers, Timmy! ?
It’s nice to see a positive look at things from time to time. Game devs being paid is always a good thing (unless they are getting paid with blood money).
Chinese money is pretty much blood and sweat money.
*Good devs*
And Remedy isn’t? Max Payne, Alan Wake, Quantum Break are all good quality games.
They should have stuck with making good games instead of becoming woketards.
Used to. Their last decent game was Alan Wake. Quantum Break was a clusterfucc, and Control is garbage. So no.
Quantum Break was better than Alan Wake, didn’t play Control yet because i don’t like androgynous female with a manly face.
Nope. Gonna have to disagree with you on that. Alan Wake had an actual good story and plot. Quantum Break was a mess, and still is.
The combat in Alan Wake was mediocre at best and horror elements where absent. Combat in Quantum Break was more fluid and dynamic.
I don’t care about the gameplay. The story and the atmosphere is what made Alan Wake such a good game. The only good thing about Quantum Break is graphics. That’s all.
So how much shekels is Control gonna lose?
I got maybe 1/3rd to 1/2 way thru it and could not be bothered to play it anymore. Most over-rated game in recent history for me and if it was not an Epic exclusive, I would have pre-ordered it. Thanks Timmy!!
So the sales are dead???
OOppss I mean THANKS Epic you guys are forcing the dark side of video games grow up.
Can you understand that we won’t buy nothing exclusive from EPIC?
is it so hard to understanding?

How many copies of Control or BL3 were sold in China, i’d love to know, really I would, because it would be the most and it’d be funny because of it.
“Sailing the high seas” is a totally justifiable course of action! No way can anyone with any sense of respect would wanna give their hard earned money for this kind of business!
Thank you Uncle Tim,for treating jack sparrow a bottle of “control” rum….
