RAGE 2 uses the Denuvo anti-tamper tech and the Vulkan API

The embargo for RAGE 2 has just been lifted and we can confirm that the game uses the Denuvo anti-tamper tech. Moreover, RAGE 2 is powered by the APEX Engine and uses the Vulkan API, something that will definitely please a lot of PC owners of weaker PC configurations.

First things first, though. The first hint of the Denuvo anti-tamper tech came from the game’s executable file size. As with most Denuvo games, RAGE 2’s executable file is over 300MB (to be more precise, it’s 415MB in size).

The second hint was the longer than anticipated initial loading times. Like most games that use the Denuvo anti-tamper tech, RAGE 2 was not loading fast enough (or at least similarly to other games that do not use Denuvo) and behaved similarly to Total War THREE KINGDOMS (and all other games that use this controversial anti-tamper tech).

As such, we went ahead and used a HEX Editor and found some similar calls between the RAGE 2, Total War THREE KINGDOMS and Just Cause 4 executable files. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say that, despite the game’s EULA not including it, RAGE 2 does in fact use the Denuvo anti-tamper tech.

It’s worth noting that the previous triple-A Avalanche game, Just Cause 4, was also using Denuvo. On the other hand, Generation Zero – a game that was also using the APEX Engine – was not using this controversial anti-tamper tech. Therefore, we are not pretty sure whether the decision to use Denuvo was made by the publisher or the developers.

Do note that Denuvo is currently present in the press review code for RAGE 2. We’ve already gotten in touch with Bethesda in order to find out whether the final/retail version will also include it, and we’ll update the story once – and if – the publisher responds. As always, if Bethesda removes Denuvo from the final version of RAGE 2, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Last but not least, RAGE 2 uses the Vulkan API. This is confirmed by its “ShadersVulkan_F.shader_bundle” file, as well as NVIDIA itself. As NVIDIA noted in its latest drivers.

“To ensure the explosive action of the Vulkan-powered Rage 2 runs at its very best when Avalanche Studios, id Software and Bethesda Softworks’ first-person shooter launches May 14th, download and install our new Game Ready Driver.”

  1. “…APEX Engine and uses the Vulkan API, something that will definitely please a lot of PC owners of weaker PC configurations…”

I will correct that statement John 😉

For Enthusiast Grade PC owners is a good thing, 1440p at 144Hz Ultra now is possible 😛

    1. At 1080p/Ultra we are GPU limited with our RTX2080Ti (I believe this is the first time happening in a triple-A game). 134fps minimum and 142fps average. That’s why I’m saying that those with weaker CPUs will benefit from the Vulkan API 😉

      1. Rage 2 will perform ~ Wolf 2 (maby a little better due to better VLK libraries & coding)
We shall see when first benchmarks hit the web…
VLK & DX12 slowly becomes standard, we need next-gen APIs to get the best from our PCs.

        1. They have completely different engines so don’t expect similar performance to Wolf2. Wolf2 uses the id Tech 6 Engine, Rage 2 uses the APEX Engine.

        2. VLK & DX12 slowly becomes standard, we need next-gen APIs to get the best from our PCs.

          Thanks, AMD!

          Thanks, AMD!

  2. EULA not including it – did you check for online authentication? There are games that don’t name Denuvo but use that term instead.

  3. ggman says combat is fun, but it doesnt have much of open story or variery its open world copy paste that you need to do it to proceed the story.

    1. Devs already said that this game is made for people enjoy its variety of guns, not the story itself. So you know what you get from it.

      1. yup but you know game journos, if it doesnt push a political message then there is no point to the game.

  4. Does anyone care really? Bethesda hasn’t exactly been knocking them out of the park lately or anything. This thing reeks of mediocrity.

  5. I don’t need to be told a modern video game will have Denuvo, I’m not a fu*king moron. Of course it will. You’d have to be a morn to think it possibly will not have it on day one.

Guess how much this is going to stop me from buying the game?

      1. Hehe. Funny how people still associate “buying”, with digital these days. “Especially” games with DRM which will expire someday.

Sadly, it’s not a crime to be stupid, and we’re stuck going along for the ride on the tidal of stupid the days. By the time these morons figure out what’s going, it will be a decade too late.

  6. Game Informer – Daniel Tack – 7 / 10

    Rage
2 fails to deliver any interesting characters, environments, or
activities. Solid shooting and cool weapons lift up the other elements
    of this title

    1. sounds about right but the characters are completely ridiculous everyone is campy as heck. it doesnt take itself serious at all.

  7. Used a VPN to Australia to unlock early. Only played for ~1hr so far, but very impressed so far.

        1. He got it from the long history of Denuvo being undefeated. Oh woops, I see it’s been defeated regularly.

However, “this” time it’s different. It’s “uncrackable ouch keep waiting another 3 years™”.

          /yawn Ya…….

        2. u were talking my boi 😉 here u go, now remind urself why did u even wrote that statement lol , its already been cracked not even 3 days lol

    1. Um……..guess what got cracked….. So much for “uncrackable ouch keep waiting another 3 years™”

Better luck next time, I guess? Oh who am I kidding. Next time will be the
same thing. Oh well, go cry in a corner with your shills.

  8. “RAGE 2 is powered by the APEX Engine and uses the Vulkan API, something that will definitely please a lot of PC owners of weaker PC
    configurations.”

    Unlike DX12 also nicknamed “-15FPS”

  9. ” uses the Vulkan API, something that will definitely please a lot of PC owners of weaker PC configurations.”

I dont know much about vulkan but with doom in order to use it you needed more than 2gb vram and with strange brigade you needed a decent dx11 videocard to play on vulkan instead of having a weak one that supports dx12.

    1. Trade offs, but Vulkan is much better than DX12 in terms of performance. Glad Avalanche implemented it into their engine, as Just Cause 4 was spotty performance wise.

      1. A couple points, this isn’t Avalanche’s engine. This is ID Tech & ID uses Vulkan so no news here. 2nd just cause runs like Dawg Schitt now because the Avalanche that’s making it isn’t the same Avalanche on Rage 2. Rage 2 & Mad Max is don’t by the original proper Avalanche a.k.a Avalanche Sweden. Just Cause 3 & 4 have been pawned off to Avalanche NY. Avalanche NY is a Dawg-Schitt Studio that has ruined the Just Cause Franchise.

        Edit:
This article is has same issues/could be wrong because Bethesda says the game is powred by ID 6, a while back.

  10. Denuvo free is a must, anyone that has a unstable internet connection or travels a lot will tell you that Denuvo for the End-consumer does not bring anything to their benefit, and is nothing but an headache.

DLCs are fine, if they are endeed an DLC and are priced accordingly. i mean really some companies sell their game at 60$ than they offer an DLC with 1 to 3 hour of content for 30$. Meanwhile you can find indie games that offer way more content for prices around 20$ to 30$ with no DLC wutsoever. Just look at most Paradox games and how insane the rabbit hole of DLC is right now.

I like my games on Steam but i have nothing against GOG that being said outside of R6 Seige i haven’t touched an Ubi game for years now (and yes Bethesda EA and SE are scum). And about The Witcher 3 i know some people think is trash, me i have nothing against it, but at least CD Projekt Red undearstand that you should not punish you costumers for 3rd party actions something the gaming industry should already know by now.

    1. I pirate all my ubi games, even the ones i buy. I’ve had enough problems with saves and their sh**ty always online crap, so i “fix” their games with a “third party executable”

  11. >Denuvo-free
    Yes.

    >has to be on Steam
Not necessarily. People are more upset with the exclusivity contract than they are of a game not being on Steam. GOG has some exclsuives and people don’t mind. Even though Origin is hated since it’s an EA product, they don’t mind the fact that their games are not on Steam.

    >should not have any DLCs or Digital editions
Nobody is complaining about DLC. They hate microtransactions, especially if they’re predatory in nature. Witcher 3 did DLC the best way which is old school style expansions.

  12. I’m a simple man, I see Denuvo Or Epic Exclusivity I pirate instead of buy. I was gonna wait and buy this a bit later, but now I’m just gonna pirate it instead. It will be cracked between Day 1-5…

      1. Yes you have a point, I’m quite sick of open world garbage. Thanks, 100% agreed. These days I’ll take a linear hallway over an open world game any day. You just saved me Homie ?

        1. Same here, hate that open world crap.
I have allways loved good story single player games.

This POS ain’t even worth pirating, and waisting space on my SSD 😀

  13. Mad Max also has a Metascore of 73 and it was a very good game. Also I trust Steam User Reviews over Professional Games Journalists and Critics to give an honest opinion.

    1. Biosht infinite and cringestein 2 got a better rating than this game, so excuse me while i disagree with the critics

    2. In the landscape of battle royals and games as a service crap this game is a breath of fresh air and a score above 70 is not bad if its under 60 thats when you have to worry

  14. Not that i want to defend RAGE 2 in any way possible, but do you really base the quality of a game on what “metascore” says? Cmon…Besides 73 could be even too much for such game.

    1. dont know what you mean by that, its more fun and has more content than wolfenstein 2 and it has better combat than shadow warrior 2, its not like they have been alot of good fps recently aside from dusk, i saw jackfrags play it for an hour, combat seems solid and super fun despite he barely had any weapons or powerups, it might get repetitive later but at this point this game is better than all those games. In fact lets go a step furhter, biosht infinite was trash crappy story, linear maps bulletspongy enemies, powers and weapons that dont feel any different, this is better than that trash.

        1. i watched an hour of it, doesnt take itself seriously at all, you choose your character and the other one gets immediately killed , the bad a*s characters die and the whole thing is campy and ridiculous. Cant call it sjw when every character including your own are clowns.

  15. looser these days. they search any reason to dont buy the game. epic or denuvo… we are so poor. but this shoudnt be an excuse to throw away the guit on others.

    1. im a fan of rage but i dont buy the agme coz dosent realese on steam. this means im not a fan of rage, just that im a fan of steam, of gabe. roger that?

  16. Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-Tamper
5 different PC within a day activation limit machine activation limit
Requires 3rd-Party Account: Bethesda.net (Supports Linking to Steam Account) copied right from the steam page. So if you buy this on steam you still need a Bethesda.net account. damn no sale for me then
