Fans of the popular Nintendo Switch emulator, Yuzu, will be happy to know that the first videos showcasing the integration of a disk-based cache surfaced today on YouTube. BSOD Gaming has just released a video showcasing the new disk-based shader cache at work in Super Mario Odyssey running on the emulator.
In truth, the team at Yuzu has lately been making incremental improvements to their emulator at an astounding pace. The emulator was only able to play its first game in July 2018, and to have Super Mario Odyssey now at a fully playable state (from start to finish) is an admirable feat in itself.
However, the recent addition of a disk-based or loadable shader cache is a truly exciting development since this means your CPU should be able to access texture data at a much faster rate. The result is that multiple Switch games currently bootable on the emulator (Pokemon Let’s Go, Arms, Bayonetta, Splatoon, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild) should exhibit significant performance boosts in FPS.
An update has also been added to Yuzu’s asynchronous GPU emulation which means that rendering tasks can now be assigned to multiple cores on your CPU. The results speak for themselves in BSOD’s video as Super Mario Odyssey could run at over 100 FPS in certain parts (albeit on a very high-end PC).
There are still a few resolution scaling bugs specific to Super Mario Odyssey that have to be addressed, as well as the occasional microstutter here and there. However, given the rate at which Yuzu is progressing, I wouldn’t be surprised if these issues disappeared very soon. You can download the latest version of Yuzu here.
Enjoy!
Pieter hails all the way from the tip of southern Africa and suffers from serious PC technophilia. Therapists say it is incurable. Now he has to remind himself constantly that gaming doesn’t count as a religion even if DRM is the devil. Thankfully, writing reviews sometimes helps with the worst symptoms.
Sometimes the rate of progress in the emulator community boggles my mind.
It used to be the case that we would have to wait several years after a console has released to even begin to see emulation efforts get somewhere.
Now we are seeing emulators built within the same generation as the actual console.
Amazing work, kudos to the devs!
finally someone with brain on dsog
Maybe for the switch(which is practically has a phone architecture)
But for ps4 and xboxone I think its too early to see an emulator
Using x86 does not mean they are easier to emulate, it can in fact be much more difficult.
Yeah indeed, it should be done earlier than ps3/x360.
But still, the switch is easier.
This is only progressing fast because Nintendo used Nvidia Tegra chips which are very well documented compared to any other console.
It also helps the fact that they are getting paid through Patreon.
Should also thank the companies for using off the shelf parts to make their consoles, which are basically just gimped PCs or phones now. Makes emulation a little simpler
Well damn. Don’t get your mind all boggled up KIM.
Where have you been? You and Sp4cTr0 disappeared at the same time and he’s still missing in action.
I revel in pirating certain games as revenge against publishers ripping me off in my youth when I could barely afford a few games a year.
However, just because he’s using an emulator doesn’t mean he isn’t buying the games and ripping them to his PC in order to play them at higher resolutions.
Indeed. I’ve been having a blast with CEMU playing several Wii U games I already own on said console. Why? Convenience plus CEMU with the various graphics packs available allows the games to look far better (higher resolution) and typically run at far higher fps. Some games’ graphics packs even include extensive gameplay tweaks. Wonderful.
Your mind? haha You don’t even use your mind! Under Jolly Roger until companies and clowns like you realize what needs to be done! Go and cry elsewhere now.
It’s going to be a whole new ball game when PS3 and XBOX360 emulators are completed. A legendary amount of games will be made available that will dwarf current gen gaming.
Cant wait to play DOA Xtreme: Scarlet on this emulator 😀
You don’t like the facts kid?
Yes it is. What crappy plastic box do you worship?
Triggered!
They arent so much dead as they are becoming increasingly obsolete. Consoles will probably always have a spot in the market for those who cant afford more than a 400$ for a machine or dont want to learn to build an entry level pc themselves. As someone who builds PCs as a side job, I hear from a lot of the people that commission me that its overwhelming learning all the terminology and compatibility which is more than understandable. Do I wish consoles would die out, have a single platform for all games to play on and have companies compete based on sheer talent and quality? Absolutely but realistically they arent going anywhere anytime soon. oh and paid online can rot in an abyss
