Pillars of Eternity 2 has flopped really hard, sold only 110K copies worldwide until September 2018

It appears that the sequel to Pillars of Eternity, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, has sold poorly. According to reports, the game has only sold 110K copies worldwide until September 2018. And while the WRPG market is a niche one, this number feels really low and may explain the rumours that surfaced about Microsoft purchasing Obsidian.

Dylan Holmes has invested $1000 in getting Pillars of Eternity 2 made and according to the first FIG figures, the game has sold 110K copies until September 2018.

As said, Obsidian aimed to sell 580K copies at $50 in order to break even; a huge number especially when talking about a WRPG that targets a small group of gamers. This basically means that Pillars of Eternity 2 flopped really hard.

  1. Should have put more effort to main questline instead hiring every minority, female, caribbean actors to push their agenda with tons of useless side quests.

      1. 70% of the characters in the game are diverse. The language is Caribbean bushspeak where you have to mouse over the words to find the english meaning. Everyone has some forced vaguely ethnic accent. Every sidequest is about some oppressed minority needing help. The art direction is just bad, from the lazy character portraits that are some kind of indian/Caribbean watercolor mess to the bland and cavernous dungeons that lack the complexity of the first game. The ship sailing mechanics are just tiresome, a sink for money and supplies that makes you not want to get onto the ship at all. The game should be renamed “Pirates of the SJW Caribbean”.

I was more so referring to the widely reported incident (at garbage tier SJW havens such as Polygon who predictably got their virtue signalling panties in a bunch) of them having edited Kickstarter backer-created game content in a patch for the first PoE following SJWs having accused them of being ‘hateful’ and ‘transphobic’ and whatever other of the usual buzzwords.

  2. Obsidian basically scammed free money from some hobbyist investors, nobody expected this title to get 580,000 sales at $50.

    1. How did they scam them? It’s the investors decision to invest and Obsidion delivered the product. The first game almost sold a million so it’s realistic to expect more than 100k sales.

  3. Most people (including me) would rather spend money on a shiny AAA/AAAA game than a niche AA. That is sad reality of the game industry these days, you either make small innovative indie games or you go really big AAA/AAAA. The AA developer is the one that gets left behind.

    1. Crowdfunding covered just a fraction of the budget, like it’s almost always the case.

      It’s a flop and one that will most likely put the studio in a dire financial situation… Which is probably the cause behind the rumors of Microsoft acquiring them.

  5. everyone was black in that game, i got bored of characters and unappealing caribbean theme after 10 hours into the game and uninstalled it and this is coming from a hardcore obsidian fan.

  6. I enjoyed the first one.

    The reason I did not get the 2nd one was everything I saw of it, specifically the visuals and the story, did not impress me. The island setting, the way the ship was a movable “base”. That didn’t sound like the best ideas in the room.

      The game is far better than the first in pretty much every way.

      Yeah, the main plot was not the best thing around and companions were mostly dull and uninteresting, but that was true for the first as well, so…

      1. No it isn’t. For the most part, writing and characters in the first game were top notch, with a metaphysical undertone and almost PS-like at times. Pillars 2 took steps backwards in that aspect, though it has improved on gameplay indeed…

          1. Story and characters were anything but unimaginative. If that is the case, then, what could be said about mundane stuff like BG1 and ID games? I mean… come on. Oh, and if you found that verbose, wait till you play Numenera or S:HK lol.

  7. First I’m hearing of this game’s existence, and I keep up with this site and gamersyde basically 100%, plus having “gamer” friends irl. A sequel with no marketing isn’t going to sell more than its predecessor. Did the first game sell 600k copies?

  8. I don’t see how this number is correct if we saw in the Steam DB leak from July 1st (when the game was 7 weeks in the market) that said that the game had sold 203,867 copies in steam alone.

    1. The number is just a (dumb) guess based on the assumption that every copy was sold at full price (which is not the case) and tied to the actual news, which is the fact that the game massively underperformed financially.

      How badly? Let’s say that people who put 1000 bucks on it during the FIG funding got under 200$ in return.
      So very, VERY badly.

  10. That’s because they rushed it out the door for no reason. It literally came out less than 3 years after the original and barely 2 years after the last DLC. Most people still haven’t even played the first one yet.
