New screenshots released for System Shock Remake, source code of the original available for download

Nightdive Studios has released some new screenshots for the upcoming remake of System Shock. After a small hiatus, the team resumed development and claimed that this remake will be a high quality game that adheres closely to the vision of the original System Shock rather than the reinterpretation that it was previously working toward.

The team now consists of the original developers who worked on the Unity demo; a demo that pleased a lot of PC gamers when it was released back in 2016. Instead of using the Unity Engine though, System Shock will be powered by Unreal Engine 4.

Nightdive Studios also released the source code for the original System Shock game. The team has been hard at work updating this code and plan to release a new version of System Shock: Enhanced Edition as well as the code in the near future.

Those interested can download the original System Shock source code from here.

Last but not least, the team stated that the game could slip past 2019, so we might be looking at a 2020 release.

Enjoy!

  1. Glad they finally released the source code. I believe it was originally a stretch goal for the remake, but better late than never I guess. Hopefully we’ll see DOOM quality source ports soon enough.

  2. Let’s just say it looks better in most games released.

If a really skillful developer can tickle the same visual quality out of Unity, i don’t know, but it should be theoretically possible. But i could bet the tools are way better in UE.

  3. Unity demo looked way more System Shocky. This switch to Unreal make the game lool like a generic horror game powere by UE. Well at least there is some good news in the team now consisting of the original developers who worked on the Unity demo and that they are working toward a more faithful remake rather than some reinterpretation.

    1. Agreed, the Unity version had that cyber punk character and vibe to it. I actually thought the high res pixelated art style was extremely unique contributed A TON to its feel and atmosphere. Huge mistake on their part imo. I’m so glad I didn’t back this project otherwise I would have been far more let down than I already am.

  4. I don’t know what the hell they were thinking, the original vision of the remake was looking great and pretty faithful to the original, then they changed it up and almost turn it into a generic looking game. Almost 2 years wasted.

    1. There are little developers that can optimize the beast of an engine Unity is. Moon Studios can, but they are the ones I can think of. Maybe The Forest developers as well, they are skilled with Unity too.

  5. This is probably my most anticipated game atm. I really hope they add VR support too further down the line or someone mods it in.
