These past two days, owners of Anno 2070 have been unable to play Ubisoft’s city-building and economic simulation game. While trying to launch the game, players are currently receiving an Unknown Error when trying to connect to Anno 2070.
And while yesterday Ubisoft claimed that it has narrowed down the issue and are working on the solution, the game is still not working.
While Ubisoft has not revealed the reasons that are causing this unknown error, some players suggest that it is caused by the game’s DRM. This is just an assumption as it has not been proven – at least for now – that its protection is at fault.
Funnily enough, the pirated version of Anno 2070 – which obviously is offline – has no issues at all. And this is precisely why all games should offer proper working offline modes. Because let’s face it; sooner or later a game will encounter some server issues. And when this happens, gamers should be able to keep playing their legitimately purchased games, no matter what.
Here is hoping that Ubisoft will resolve these server issues as soon as possible!

Oh ubisoft . . . . .
Reason 1001 I only buy DRM free.
Whenever someone tells me always online is fine and you just need to upgrade your internet connection I shake my head in frustration. The problem is never my connection, it’s the servers.
Server maintenance, server crashes, server lag, server discontinuation… When these things happen, and they will, your game is dead as doornails and the only thing you can do is turn to the pirates for help. Twenty years from now, we’ll still be playing Super Mario Bros. Can we still play Diablo 3 or Destiny 2? I doubt it.
Luckily, the pirates have fixed Anno 2070 so we’ll still have that.
also isnt this game cracked?
Another proof why drm sucks.
yes where’s the proof?
The fact that the cracked version without DRM works while the DRMed version is having issues.
In essence the DRM has failed spectacularly at its intended purpose. Where it’s supposed to allow legit players to play the game and only block pirates, it’s instead failing to stop pirates from playing the game AND blocking legit players.
Basically, the DRM is actively removing value from the game.
yes where’s the proof?
From the article:
“Funnily enough, the pirated version of Anno 2070 – which obviously is offline – has no issues at all.”
It might not be intended as DRM, but when online functionality is tied into the game to such a level that they can’t ship an offline mode for cases such as this (or of course for those who want to play after the servers are eventually taken down), it may as well be DRM because it’s achieving the same thing.
Without an account linked to an installation you can’t connect, and without connecting you can’t play. That sounds like DRM to me.
Also, a question for you this time: what would be different between a pirated and legit version of a game other than the pirated version either stripping or bypassing DRM?
WHAT PROOF THESE ARE FILTHY PIRATE LOSERS ON THIS SITE THEY WILL BLAME DRM IF THEIR WIFE GETS PREGNANT LOL THEY JUST WANT THEIR GAMES FOR FREE
Honest PC gamers pay for DRM methods yet again
Bleh.
